Excellent home office network laser printer

I finally retired my 18 year old HP Laserjet 6MP. It still works, but the network printer box that I've been using with it is broken and my new computer does not have a parallel port on the back. The review on CNET for the OKI B411DN was very positive which led me to choose this printer. It was a true plug and play on my network. After attaching the cords and turning it on, my computer detected the printer on the network right away. I loaded the drivers from the included disk, and began printing. The speed and quality of the new OKI are many times better than my old 6MP workhorse. I'm very happy with it. It also has a smaller footprint and is lighter in weight than my old printer. Can you believe I paid over $1000 for that 6MP 18 years ago! I probably can't even give it away now.

So far so good

I bought the B411DN model of this printer 3 weeks ago for my home network, selected the free shipping option and it arrived within 3 business days. Setup was pretty straightforward, although some of the Oki instructions were a bit out of order. One has to install the software from the enclosed CD before driving some of the setup function, but otherwise no problems. I have 3 PCs to connect, and elected to use the Oki website installer from each. This worked without a hitch.

We've used the printer quite a bit since then without any glitches or hitches. Its been all text and forms so far, and the print quality seems very good. I haven't actually clocked the speed, but its much faster than the companion ink jet printer we use, and I can believe the advertised 35 ppm for text. Time to print start for a network driven job appears to be between 5-10 seconds, but once it starts it chugs along pretty quickly.

We leave it always powered on, although 60 seconds or so after power on (or after print job completes) it falls back into power saver mode, the silence of which leads me to believe it isn't sucking up any watts of significance. If the advertised pages per cartridge holds up, then this will likely turn out to be far more economical than the ink jet.

Overall, I'd say this is a very good monochrome printer. Purchase price was, in my view, a pretty good deal given the performance, economy and good reviews on various websites.

Great B/W LED Duplex Printer

This printer is excellent! Fast (even with duplexing), energy efficient, and sleek in design. LED technology is similar to Laser technology but more energy efficient (meaning less heat and curling) and less moveable parts which means longer lasting. And Oki is the innovator in this area. I was so tired of replacing color cartridges on my HP inkjet when all I do is print B/W for the most part. The B411 also seems extremely well built. Overall I am very pleased!

This is a product I wish I could have read reviews on before buying. First, I am very happy with it, after all. I needed a printer to print the plans at home. It may be a photographic quality printer, I don't know. I only used it for home plans. I didn't really need color, but it come with color and the color works fine.
Arriving:
The first surprise was the overall size. It was way bigger than I thought it would be. UPS doesn't just dump it on your porch. A mover comes to your house and asks you, "where do you want us to put it?" You need to have enough room for it. It won't just fit on your desk, I think you have to get the stand. Once I saw how big it was, I ordered a stand. That wasted about a week. Finally, I got the stand put together and the printer put on it. Set up was not to bad, but I paid a computer expert to hook it up. I don't know how much trouble I would have had if I did it myself. I found later that the OfficeMax had one in the printing department, if you want to go see one. I imagine they all have the same stuff.
Use;
The only thing bad, I found so far, (about a month), is it is hard to change the paper. It is hard to get the paper in straight. It takes the machine about 2 or 3 minutes to figure out if it will accept the paper or not. Four or five tries will take 15 minutes. This is not good if you are printing at the last minute. My advice is buy the HP paper. The edges are taped, not glued. You can untape it with out damaging the leading edge of the paper and then the paper will feed in the first time. I looked for a YOUTube video on the feeding of the paper. I found videos of printing, but no set up or paper feeding. If you make it as far printing as the fellow in the video, you would have mastered the machine with no video.
Canon;
I don't know if they read this, but if they do, they should post some videos online. It would make it easier to operate. Seems like they don't care. The machine is nice, but where are their engineers? The Canon web site is lacking also. If you enter the ink cartridge number you need in the search area in the Canon site, it says "not found". How can they not have all their own numbers in their own site? Finding ink (on this size printer, they call it ink, not toner) may be a challenge. I could not find the exact same cartridges that came with the printer on Amazon. Like I said before, I could not find them on the Canon site either. I ordered several kinds of ink cartridges (on Amazon) to see which ones would work. It seems like Canon would care more than that.
Bottom Line;
This is way better than not having a 24 x 36 printer. I was driving all over town and not getting plans printed on time was a major delay for me. Now I can print at home. I don't have a handle on cost yet. but it pays for itself in time saved. I would buy it again, but I wish the Canon people had some common sense, as far as making operation user friendly. I don't want to be negative. I am really happy with this purchase. As you can see by the 5 stars. There was nothing affordable even 2 years ago. Hope this was helpful.

the honeymoon is over

This below average rating comes from loving the printer for 2 years (5 stars) minus all the headaches and expense (-4 stars)incurred lately from replacement parts, plus 1 star of hope from the Wiki Community.

Briefly, the yellow ink tank was low but I wasn't concerned because I only needed to print in black. Deadline looming, the yellow ran out, printer on strike; no yellow, no print. Ordered replacement ink and installed it. Now there's a hardware error followed by multiple head cleanings and "replace print head" message.

Foolishly thinking that a print head should last more than two years, I went to the "replace print head" option so that I could examine the head and maybe in the process reset something that was amiss. Doing so sucked up 1/4 of all the ink in my previously full tanks, or about $100 worth of ink, and didn't change the error message. Multiple cleanings sucked up more ink.

Canon tech support helped me determine that the cyan portion of the print head was clogged. Why? because I had been away for 2 1/2 weeks: "Canon recommends that you use the printer at least once a week so that the ink doesn't dry and clog the nozzles." Take note everyone: DO NOT GO ANYWHERE FOR MORE THAN A WEEK. Stay with your printer! Forget about business travel, vacations and family emergencies. Man your Canons!

No cyan, no print, not even black. Clean the print head? "Canon does not recommend using any kind of chemicals to clean the print head because it may damage the printer." What part exactly does it damage? "Canon does not recommend...." New print head: $600. This is more that half the cost of the entire machine. It's like buying a new car for $30K, having the fuel injection system fail after two years and needing to pay $16K for the new parts alone.

Print head installed but, oh yeah, what about all that overpriced ink sucked from my tanks? Maintenance cartridge is full, says the display now. Printer no print no way no how with full maintenance cartridge... but don't try to clean - must buy new, new, NEW: $70.

The second and brightest star in this review is the help offered by the likes of canonipf and other sites. I moved from HP because they were pulling this kind of stuff. Turns out you CAN clean the print head and you CAN clean and reset the maintenance cartridge - with a little monkey wrenching. Eventually big information will put an end to this type of corporate con but, in the meantime, and with some research, you can make this otherwise very nice printer work for you.

Canon ipf605 printer

This Canon worked great for a little over a year, now it is stuck on a print head error. I have installed 2 new print heads, 2 new maintenance cartridges and all new ink cartridges and it is still stuck on print head error. Have had a local company here 3 times and no one can fix this problem. Also had Canon support work on this and they can't fix it.
I guess it trash and time for a new printer.

Better than Expected

The Canon i-SENSYS LBP7200Cdn has a maximum resolution of 9600x600 dpi and prints great color photos, which was a surprise to me. Among the pros for this printer, I can count the large casing, which is a secure output tray into which paper can drop. The input tray has 250-sheet capacity, which is great for our office use. The paper handling can be increased if needed.

Standard network connectivity is provided, which is a must for any office these days. This printer has good remote monitoring features as well.

On top of everything, Canon i-SENSYS LBP7200Cdn looks very elegant with cream finish.

The drawback is that it is really heavy. You may need some strong arms to put it where you will set this printer. Once it is set-up, though, this should not be a problem.

Another con is that it isn't too fast, which is up to 20ppm.

Overall, this printer is getting the job done, and with the current price, under three hundred bucks, it is a go for me...

Printer 5 stars, Canon service 0, Windows 7 problems

I'm using Windows 7 64bit. I bought this printer to put on my home network. My husband and I are heavy users, and we found that a shared printer on one of our computer did not work well for us.
We installed the printer following the instructions that came with it, and installed the Canon software from the enclosed CD, again, just as the instructions say.
The printer would not print. We could see it on the network, we could ping it, but print jobs simply would not go through.
Called Canon Customer Service. To make a long story short, after being told that 'the software on the CD does not work with Windows 7', and about an hour of 'download this, download that, install this...etc', we finally got to the 'uninstall the previous driver (the one from the CD), so we can activate the new one.' The Canon uninstaller hangs. After a couple of resets, attempts, etc, the rep told me to 'call my hardware vendor to have them get rid of the stuck driver'. Needless to say, I'm not going to call Dell to ask them to solve a Canon software problem.
I then installed the printer on the USB port. It worked. The printer prints beautiful pictures, when it works.
Unfortunately, I was foolish enough to reattempt the whole re-installation of the net printer server. My bad. At that point, the printer would no longer print even in USB mode. Finally got it back to printing from the USB. Had to do a 'restore to previous date' on Windows. This is what I have been doing all day.
So: if you have Windows 7, I suggest you choose a different printer. If you still want this printer, for goodness sake, DO NOT INSTALL THE DRIVERS FROM THE CD! Call Canon right away and hope for the best.

Excellent value

I ordered this printer with some hesitation. The price was so low I thought it was too good to be true. It was true! I like everything about it. It is fast, easy to load toner, has a bypass tray, 2 sided printing, network capability and it hasn't jammed. Oh yes, it makes really nice prints. It was pretty easy to set up. Cons: First page from a cold printer is a little slow and, like so many devices today, there is no printed user manual. All told, it was just what I needed at the right price.

A bit overkill perhaps

I purchased this printer as a gift for our family for Christmas. We have not owned a printer in 8 years but instead depended on printing at work or emailing documents or taking pictures to Walgreens or Walmart for printing.

After owning several inkjet printers in schools and always being frustrated at the tremendous waste in the cartridges clogging and drying out due to very intermittent use and having to be replaced at great expense this printer has seemed to make a good compromise.

It is perhaps a bit overkill for home use, but it integrated like a charm in our combination wired and wireless home network using both Windows and OS X machines. And we love the duplexing.

I would recommend it to anyone looking for a durable and convenient home network printer.

Excellent but Be Warned

I have owned this printer for over a year. It produces excellent and professional looking copies. I have received numerous compliments on the brochures and pieces printed by it. On the negative side, its reproduction of pictures in the enhanced photo mode often causes jams, especially when using photo laser paper. However, again once copied the finished product is very good. However, be warned that the replace ink cubes are outrageously expensive. I discovered this quickly as I needed to purchase new cubes after less than 1000 copies. As I shopped around for the best price, I was able to purchase a complete dual set of cubes for close to $500. They cost more than the printer. On these cubes I am running about 1500 per cube. As I check prices out now, you are lucky to find a complete set at less than $550. In hind site, though I love the quality of the reproductions and the eco-friendly factor, I would not purchase it. If Xerox could find a way to produce the ink at a more reasonable price, than I would highly recommend this product. But not now!

Excellent. By far the best all-in-one that we've used.

We go through printers pretty frequently, because we move them a lot, which doesn't seem to improve their durability. We have had color laser all-in-ones from HP and Brother before this, and an inkjet all-in-one from Canon before those.

This is by far the best out of any of the all-in-ones that I've tried or owned. I highly recommend it. The output is great and it is simple to use and maintain. I even find that the cartridges last longer on this one than the previous Brother machine that I've had, when comparing actual life to advertized life.

The only features that the 9970 have that isn't common among the field of color laser all-in-ones, is the duplex printing, and the color touch screen. Both work great, and surprised me. I was worried that the duplex feature would cause jams and other problems, but it never has. I thought that the touch screen was a useless gimmick that added cost with no real benefit. That too proved to be inaccurate. It is surprisingly useful, especially the way it walks you through maintenance tasks.

I've had this machine for 7 months now and have not had any issues or complaints. It prints very well and does every advertised function exactly as you would hope that it would.

My only piece of advice when buying this machine is to watch the price. It seems to fluctuate widely, as do some of the other Brother all-in-one machine. Over the course of a few weeks, it will fluctuate by over one hundred dollars, on Amazon.

After you buy the machine, I recommend that you stick to genuine Brother cartridges with no modifications. I ruined a different Brother all-in-one by modifying the cartridges to get extra life out of them. I saved a few hundred dollars on toner, but ended up making a mess and having to spend even more to buy a new machine.

Instead of physically modifying the cartridges or using generics or refills, you can follow this procedure to extend the life of the legit cartridges: 1) Open the toner door. 2) Press "1" on the number pad, while the door is open. 3) Scroll down to reset the life on the cartridge that is "out of life":
