5Wow, I thought this printer was great!!
By college student
Okay, so I bought the printer first and then was kinda bored so I decided to look at the reviews for it on amazon.com. I was surprised to see only 1 star as average. I bought the z55 about 3 months ago and I use it at my college dorm for primarily printing reports and occasionally large photos of friends or posters. I have never had trouble with the printer since I've bought it and its actually still working on the same print cartridge with which it started; thats amazing!!!

Now i do admit, the z55 is by no means a godsend, it has its quirks. First, Installation is a pain, yes, and the program that pops up everytime you print tends to freeze. According to my pop up, ive never gotten passed 66% of a print job (although the sheet has actually been printed out). But its easy to deal with, you just close the window when it messes up. For some strange reason my Windows XP Professional is much more stable than other computers with the same OS, so even if the lexmark program freezes, the rest of the computer is fine.
With the paper jam issue: I have had many printers from every company except epson. What I've noticed about lexmarks is that once theres a paper jam and you manually try to tug the sheet out with your hand, thats when you cross the border into printer hell. The printer continues to jam from that point on, or it will suck in more than one sheet of paper when printing, or itll take in the paper at an angle so it crumples at on side. But that has not happened with the z55 yet.

The Pros are all in the job:
The black and white print speed in draft mode is FAST, amazingly fast (yet noisy). And even on draft mode the quality of the print is good enough to be turned in. The text is crisp and the ink dries quickly.
THe color mode is SLOW, and the higher the quality, the slower the print speed. But you have to realize that you are printing at a whopping 2.2 megapixels jammed onto the sheet, thats a lot of dots, and who needs a high quality photo IMMEDIATELY? But once the sheet pops out of the printer is picture bliss, i have yet to see graininess due to the printers dpi. I have to constantly look for high quality images in order to print them out on this printer. Its excellent, the best I've seen so far.

Other than that there are some nice quirks like the printer turns off automatically when you turn the computer off and on when you send it a print job, and the pleasant voice that says printing started and printing complete.

All in all, I have really enjoyed the lexmark z55 and would recommend it to anyone looking for high quality color and quick black and white prints. You have to have a technological edge though in order to reap the benefits.

1Slow, doesn't work
By Samuel W. Hills
The Lexmark Z55 was advertised as being very fast and easy to use. NOT TRUE! It took several tries to get the software installed, and the printer ran extremely slow, when it did print at all. It would not print at all from DOS, or from other computers on the network. Printing from a DOS program in Windows caused a Windows program to pop up and it seemed to take 'nearly forever' to print a simple directory listing. Even such a simple command as DIR>LPT1: caused the computer to crash.

A tech. support call to Lexmark (NOT a toll-free number!) revealed that this is a 'brain-dead' printer that does not include the printhead driver in its on-board electronics, but instead relies on the host computer to control the printhead. So whenever you print anything, you're tying up your CPU doing what the printer is supposed to do itself!

I do NOT recommend this printer unless you want to 'throw away' half your CPU speed every time you want to print!

1Great when it works...but that's not all that often
By feysidhe
For the first few months, this worked like a dream. Then it started misfiring paper and either not printing, printing one line, or printing skewed. Basically, not worth the money.

5Excellent printer - used 9 hours a day for 8 days!
By Jim Bowden
Purchased this printer versus a Sony due to name brand issues.

WORKS like a champ! We are printing:

On average: 90 prints a day for a 9 hour day * 9 days = 810 prints so far.

It has never jammed.

I have had fairly good luck buying the printer cartridge/paper (40 sheets or 100 sheet / pack) in NYC. Prices for the 40 print pack: $17.00 at J and R to as much as $25.00 at Compusa Midtown. Amazon sells the 100 print pack are $30.00 (through Adorama).

Print cartridge is easy to change (takes seconds).

Highly recommended.

4Olympus P-10 first impressions
By John Woods
Today I got to play with an Olympus P-10 printer I just received. It comes with a starter pack of ribbon and paper good for 5 4x6 pictures.

The printer uses Dye-Sublimation technology. It prints Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and a special overcoat layer that makes prints fade resistant. You can connect the printer to your PC with a USB cable, or, if your camera supports PictBridge technology, you can connect the camera to the printer directly, and print without PC.

There are two paper sizes supported by the printer 4" x 6" and 3.5" x 5". You have to buy special paper, which comes with ribbon. What I like the most about this printer, is that it produces borderless pictures without the need to tear off perforation or anything like that. When it spits out a picture it's just like from your local drug store - glossy, and ready to use. Or, if you prefer, you can specify to print the images with white border.

The printer is very easy to use, fast, and looks superb. I welcome the fact that it doesn't require any nozzle cleaning, head adjusting, or much preparation at all.

But now is the most important question. How good can it print? I run through the supplied pack very quickly, printing 5 pictures from my collection. Two of the pictures I printed before, using Epson Stylus Photo 820 Printer, Epson Inks, and Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper. The ink-jet clearly had an advantage rendering light tones, seeing as it was a 6-color printer. The Olympus, unfortunately, really struggles with rendering light blue. The lighter shades of sky don't look all well to me. Another area where I wouldn't mind to see improvement is shadow detail. Perhaps we are ready for 6 or 7 color Dye-Sub printers, 3 colors may be not adequate.

Off course just 5 pictures is not enough to get familiar with the printer, I am sure, as I gain experience with it and learn to play with settings, I should be able to foresee difficult to print areas of images, and perhaps correct them in order to get better prints.

Overall the printer produces very nice results. And I can see that it will be much easier to maintain and use than an ink-jet.

5Excellent all-around printer
By MusicLover1970
I bought this for my wife to supplement our P-400 (8x10). We went digital almost 3 years ago with the Olympus C4040 and P-400 and I was looking for something to do 4x6s w/o having to cut 8x10s down all the time. I've always been partial to Olympus, having worked extensively with the OM-1 as a photographer in the early 90s. We were very happy with the results we received from the P-400 and I have to say the prints from the P-10 are stunning, if not better. The cost per print is about 39¢, which is a bit more than taking it to some of the local pharmacies (though we live in the middle of nowhere, we'd more than make up for it in time and gas). Plus there's something to be said for the convenience of printing at home. Print time is reasonable, what you'd expect from a dye sub. The greatest benefit to me is that you don't get the diffusion dot patterns you find with the ink-jet "photo" printers. If you want "photos", dye sub is the only way to go -- and the bottom line is the P-10 gives the quality I want at a reasonable price.

5Super Printer!
By A Customer
The Canon i250 is marvelous. My old HP died, and I wanted an inexpensive printer now because I expected at a later date to buy a new computer and a higher tech printer. Now I need neither. In other words, the Canon i250 allows me to print wonderfully what I thought only higher tech/higher priced printers would! I've been able to print greeting cards, as well as photos and crisply clear documents. The i250 only takes seconds to warm up, and each print job is done quickly and beautifully. This printer allows one to choose a variety of print qualities and paper types to ensure the best print for each job. Set up was super easy, as is the printer's use. And noise? It's not excessive; I never even give it a second thought. Along with superb performance and inexpensive price, another great thing about the i250 is that I can buy both a black and a color refill cartridge for it for less than I'd pay for one HP cartridge. What a super printer bargain!

5Superbly Well-Rounded & Affordable. Oh, and Mac-compliant!
By Michele Askew
Where do I start? This little bugger is AMAZING! I actually bought this for my son, because he got an iMac (being the Apple freak he is), and his printer was ailing. So I told him if he found one under $75 I'd get it. He did. He found the Canon i250.
This little guy is so good! The quality is exceptional (and beautiful w/ Mac OS X font-handling.) and he can use it for everything, even printing photos. Now, I don't recommend it for exclusively photos, but for the occasional one, it's fine. Also, refills won't break the bank with about $7 and $15 respectively. Printing time is short; very efficient and quick. Also, it comes with many features that are considered as 'extras' with the others HE looked at. The only problem is it doesn't come with a USB cable, and that's all it's compatible with. But that's OK... I found a Belkin for about $5. I would recommend this to anyone, especially for document designers and offices for its 'bang for the buck'. Amzing features, reliability, efficiency/speed, and quality wrapped in a (very) tiny (perfect for portability.) package that won't break the bank.

5Perfect inexpensive ink-jet
By A Customer
Considering this printer costs less than the ink for most other ink-jet printers, it has far exceeded my expectations. It prints quickly and has accurate color, what more can you ask from a $50 printer? Another reviewer mentioned that it does not work with Mac OS 10.3 (Panther), they are wrong. There is a patch you can download and install at: [...] which makes it work perfectly in Panther. Somebody else complained about it not including a USB cable, which it doesn't, as mentioned in the technical specs page. This makes it no different from any other USB printer sold in the last 3 years, so be sure to purchase a USB cable. If you are looking for a cheap no-frills printer that probably costs less than the ink for other printers, I highly reccomend this printer!

4Midpriced winner
By Hal Lancer
What I like about the HP Deskjet 940c: Printed output looks terrific, and it’s fast (more detail below). It’s very quiet. It has a Cancel Printing button on the printer console that does indeed immediately abort the current printing job, a very nice feature. It has an ink level display that can be viewed onscreen in the HP software as well as ink level warning lights on the console. Envelopes are not wrinkled running through the printer (a problem with some older HPs). There is also a convenient single envelope slot for printing just one envelope without removing the regular-sized paper from the tray, for which the loading capacity is 150 sheets. In my experience, HP printheads need much less time- and ink-wasting maintenance and fussy handholding than the clog-prone printhead on the 1998 Epson inkjet I just replaced. I can’t tell yet how long the ink cartridges last; I’ll try to post an update when I have a better bead on that.
What I don’t like about the HP Deskjet 940c: The manufacturer warranty is too short (only 90 days). The HP drivers install unusually slowly from the CD-ROM (8 minutes on my PC, where software for most printers installs in 2 or 3 minutes). Software uninstallation is also very slow and still leaves a lot of junk behind in the Windows Registry. Queue up four or more print jobs and you’re likely to experience a Windows print job lockup halfway through which requires ctrl-alt-deleting and reloading print jobs to recover, especially in the speedier Draft mode, with the current driver version. Envelope printing on a stack of up to 15 envelopes is prone to paper skips and jams within the printer in Draft mode; in Normal mode, a stack of envelopes feeds through much better. Documentation to show the user how to find or use useful features such as the onscreen ink level display, the Cancel Print button, and the single envelope slot is missing or confusing. I consider these defects minor, overall.
Quality: Text in Draft mode appears a little dim but reasonably crisp to the naked eye (though a magnifying glass shows otherwise). I consider Draft mode good enough for all but critical applications, and of course, frequent use of it will reduce ink cartridge replacement costs. Normal mode looks outstanding even under a strong magnifying glass. I saw no advantage to using Best mode for text. A photo printed on photo paper in Best mode was indistinguishable from a photo printed by a camera shop. It’s easy and quick to change the default printing mode onscreen. Speed: Advertised printer speeds are always inflated, like monitor screen sizes and modem speeds. HP quotes “up to 12 pages per minute” for the 940c. Of course, speeds vary depending on setups. So how fast is the 940c, really? I connected it to USB (parallel port is likely slower) and ran tests printing pages of all black text with Word97 in Win98, with double-spaced 12 point font, on a PII-400 with 128k of RAM. I came up with average speeds of 8.75 ppm in Draft mode, 4.1 ppm in Normal mode, and 3.0 ppm in Best mode… very good speed for this price. Adding graphics, as usual, slows things down considerably, especially in Normal mode. A 4x6 photo, Best mode on photo paper, printed in under two minutes.
The Deskjet 940c uses an HP#15 black ink cartridge, and either a low-capacity or high-capacity HP#78 tri-color cartridge. You can purchase accessories I haven’t tested from HP to allow automatic two-sided printing or networked printing. The 940c comes with a power cable, a black ink cartridge, and a low-capacity tri-color cartridge; you need to supply either a USB cable (with Win98 or higher) or an IEEE 1284-compliant (newer than 1997 or so) parallel cable to connect it to a PC.

5Pleased with the HP 940C
By Bradley Bowden
I have owned this printer since Christmas ('01) and have had nothing but success with it. The print speed is great for text documents. I was also able to print great looking glossy slides for a poster presentation. The print cartridges seem to have a pretty good lifetime, as well. I haven't had any problems with paper jams. It has handled some documents with pretty hefty memory neeeds without locking-up too. Definitely, well worth the cost!

1Disappointed BIG TIME!
By A Customer
This is our 2nd HP printer. Only to say, we regret buying it. The 1st HP printer, was purchased over 3 yrs ago. It's an 1100c series color printer that is on a "higher" end of the printer line.
Buying a G3 PowerBook had us looking for a USB compatible printer. At first, we purchased the LexMark Z55, which worked GREAT for almost year, before a faulty part went out. *(we do a LOT of printing).

So, thinking about how a former HP product was great, we got this one at the store when we were in a rush. We didn't even look at the demo. BIG MISTAKE!

1. SPEED, was the first disappointment - way too slow. LexMark speed is way better, even for photo quality pics. The ole 1100c is faster than this one too.

2nd disappointment was HP changed the printer cartridges. These are NO LONGER refillable. They have metal clips on the sides, and there is no way to refill them.

3. There aren't enough printing options available. Sometimes I wanted to makes changes that I could do easily with the older 1100c series printer. I found that the options change depending what program I am on, therefore making it more confusing. (to go into detail on this subject, I'd have to write a long long explanation). Basically, it was a LET -down, I don't even want to keep this thing. I'm better off buying a different printer, with refillable inks. Ink is just too EXPENSIVE to be purchasing and not refilling.

4. When the Black ink starts running low. It Basically makes you change the cartridge. It doesn't allow you to run the printer on low black ink. The machine stops functioning, and the big ink light blinks, and sends a message to your computer, saying STOP! Color inks run low, and the computer allows you to function with low color, but different story on the black ink.
