1Stay away from this printer!
By Deborah L. Santini
Have had the 5130 CDN for 13 months now. The consumables are incredibly expensive and only available from Dell. We are constantly having to replace toner, the toner waste container, fuser, etc. They are all high-priced from Dell.

One month out of warranty the printer quit with an error that it needed a new belt unit. Ordered the belt unit (only available from Dell for $375.00) and installed it. At power up it gave us an 006-370 error and said to call for support.

Called for support and wasted a ridiculous amount of time on hold then being transferred to different people.

Finally spoke to a tech support person who ultimately told me that since the printer wasn't under warranty any longer I'd have to order a "Ross Assembly"/print head and have the MCU/ESS board replaced. He also told me I'd have to hire a technician to install these parts as they are not something a customer can do. And he said that I could NOT pay to order the parts from Dell or have a Dell technician do the work, because the printer is out of warranty.

I spoke to his supervisor who treated me like an idiot and told me repeatedly that if I had just paid the extra money for the extended warranty I wouldn't have to worry about arranging to get the printer fixed on my own.

Then I received the following email from Dell:

"The Dell part c399t is not available for sale from Dell as it is recommended to not attempt to replace it. Several parts houses do have it available (found by internet searching Dell C399T), best price for the part only we found is $795.00. This has the potential to be a $1000 repair. The recommended choice would be to replace the printer. If you need anything else please let me know."

So a 13 month old printer that Dell advertises as providing "Superb Performance" and as an "Exceptional Long Term Value" will cost more than its purchase price to repair and they recommend just replacing it. WHAT???

Our university spends literally hundreds of thousands of dollars with Dell every year and this is the "service" they provide.

Dell clearly does not stand behind the products they sell and it seems clear that unless you buy the extended warranty your equipement will fail within days of when the one year warranty expires.

So steer clear of Dell products entirely, especially this printer.

5This is a lot of printer
By Neurasthenic
It does a lot, it does it quickly, it prints from just about anything with a microchip, and it's easy to set up. The only disadvantage to this beast is that it takes up a lot of space. We use the printer primarily from OSX, but it works from Windows too, and I was even able to print from a Tandy WP-2, an eight bit computer from 1989 that connected directly to the printer's parallel port.

It wakes from sleep faster than Lexmark printers do, in my experience, and the print looks better than a Xerox Phaser. My only complaint is with the form factor -- the printer is vast, and the auxiliary paper tray is on the side, so in addition to finding the linear feet for the printer itself, you need to leave a couple of extra feet to the right if you plan to print on letterhead or transparencies (yes, you can put them in the regular printer tray as an alternative, but it would be nice to use the auxiliary tray since Dell was nice enough to build one in there).

5Home Office 5130cdn
By Wort
I have used this printer for >1 year, <50k pages - nearly all pages containing some color, and many with substantial color coverage.
I purchased this model in an attempt to cut my total cost of printing - it seems like the more expensive the printer, the lower the cost of toner/page.
At this point, my calculation says that I am now $ ahead over buying a $500 printer because of lower toner cost - YMMV...remember, I use a LOT of color.

The printer has performed as advertised.
It is big and heavy for a home office.
Even after a year, it seems ridiculously fast...especially when it is duplexing.
Duplex printing has worked flawlessly.
Toner carts are very easy to change.
The few paper jams I have encountered have been easy to clear.
The black cartridges seem to last forever.
The only issue I have had is that a couple of times it seemed to "forget" what size paper it is set for. Turing power off and back on and resetting paper size/sources fixed it.
I have not used Dell support for this product, so cannot comment specifically, but I assume support would be the usual nightmare of idiotic first/second level agents.

This printer has a 3 year warranty, so I am confused by comments in another review here, although it is little hard to believe that an IT Dept that does >$100k/year w/Dell cannot resolve issues with a defective product.
