5A Fabulous Printer
By Robert Nichols
My new Pixma Pro9000 is astoundingly good. I have used Epson photo printers for about 10 years and was reasonably content with the results, although I was somewhat bothered by the slowness and never able to perfectly match monitor and print despite calibrating with a Pantone ColorVision Spyder2. Now, for the first time my print output is exactly like what I see on screen. The speed of the printer is amazing - a 4x6 on highest quality takes a bit over a minute and less than a minute on standard quality. Larger sizes also print five or six times as fast as my Epson did. The output quality on Canon Photo Paper Pro Super High Gloss is just beautiful - wonderfully deep and rich colors essentially indistinguishable from those on the monitor screen.

The previous poster complained about the included software Easy PhotoPrint, but this application is not meant for sophisticated users. Also supplied with the printer is a plug-in for Photoshop, Easy Photoprint Pro, which allows complete control over the printing process, as does, of course, Photoshop itself. I was surprised to see that the print output when I let the printer driver manage the color handling in Photoshop was equal or superior to that obtained when I used ICC profiles and let Photoshop do the color handling.

5A Superb product
By Dr. Arthur Gleiner
This printer is a first rate piece of technology. Everything from its paper handling to its print quality to the software utilities that accompany it are excellent. It has greatly exceeded my expectations and has far outperformed other printers I have owned over the past 15 years.

I have had some prints done by a professional lab for comparison purposes. The Canon is indistinguishable in its quality. Once it is properly set up, you get a very accurate transfer of color and luminence from screen to paper - a feat that has been close to impossible with other printers I have used. The fact that you can accurately edit a picture and predict the appearance of the print so reliably saves you a tremendous amount of time and money.

The print drivers that Canon includes are well documented, but you must take some time to read and understang the process of using them to get the best results. Once you have yours properly set up, you will quickly become addicted to the results.

Its paper handling is especially noteworthy. Heavy stock that requires hand feeding and constant supervision with other printers can be batch loaded and print flawlessly with the Canon. If you value your time and your sanity, you will appreciate what this means.

Worth every penny!

5Fantastic quality, and incredible speed.
By Jim Krupnik
This is just a quick review, as most has already been said about this printer. I have used it for about a month now, and I am still stunned by the quality of print that comes from this machine. I have had many printers over the years, and still have a few A4 printers. I use my printers for both personal, and professional print work.

This printer is very fast when printing in color. Considering the range of colors, and the accuracy it delivers time after time, I find it hard to believe that a printer at this price can spit out a full 13x19 lab quality print in about 1 min, 20 sec. It will print a similar 8x10 in about 30 sec. Wow....

The color is stunning, and better than a commercial lab, as you can tune your print to exactly produce the result you want, and deliver the finished product within minutes. It's an entirely new level of home/studio photo printing.

Pigment based printing has become the rage lately, as it has great colorfastness over time. Canon offers a pigment based printer in this class as well, but it does have a serious cost penalty. The truth is, the new dye based inks used in the 9000 are solid for over 100 years in storage, and over 30 years on display. That beats old fashioned "chrome" prints to near death. The new dyes also offer beautiful "visual impact" that many pigment printers still lack. Dark shadow areas remain clean as well, and do not suffer from "brassing" where pigment piles up, and changes the sheen of the paper surface.

It's the bargain of the century that delivers awesome images on a wide variety of paper types. The driver/sofware suite is very well done, and offers many choices. You don't have to work around it. You simply work with it, and get a big smile every time.

The downside is that if you print lots of large B&W prints, there are better choices out there. The 9000 does a splendid job of printing B&W, but it takes a LONG time to print a 13x19 image. I'm talking about 16 minutes..... Monochrome isn't so bad in time, and delivers very nice images, but if you are looking for true B&W prints that will stun viewers, you have to be patient when printing them.

That's OK for me, as I only print fine quality B&W every now and then. The speed of full color printing on the 9000 is more important to me overall.

There it is. The 9000 is a great printing tool, at an affordable price point.

4Quality is fine. I've had Epson Printers for decades now and...
By Debra Perkowski
Have decided their really is no where else to go so Epson wins by default no matter how screwed up they make their machines. The manuals are fatally flawed. Does Epson have an Elementary School design them as homework? Impossible to find any clear instructions on what is a complicated machine by design. Hidden features, tiny print in the manual as well as the machine. Is this a game for the designers? How frustrated can we make our users? It's a PRINTER! Make it UTILITARIAN and forget the silly Sleak and Sophisticated Image and just make it clear and make it work!

5Printer
By Mister Boffo
Overall:
This is a product I wish I could have read reviews on before buying. First, I am very happy with it, after all. I needed a printer to print the plans at home. It may be a photographic quality printer, I don't know. I only used it for home plans. I didn't really need color, but it come with color and the color works fine.
Arriving:
The first surprise was the overall size. It was way bigger than I thought it would be. UPS doesn't just dump it on your porch. A mover comes to your house and asks you, "where do you want us to put it?" You need to have enough room for it. It won't just fit on your desk, I think you have to get the stand. Once I saw how big it was, I ordered a stand. That wasted about a week. Finally, I got the stand put together and the printer put on it. Set up was not to bad, but I paid a computer expert to hook it up. I don't know how much trouble I would have had if I did it myself. I found later that the OfficeMax had one in the printing department, if you want to go see one. I imagine they all have the same stuff.
Use;
The only thing bad, I found so far, (about a month), is it is hard to change the paper. It is hard to get the paper in straight. It takes the machine about 2 or 3 minutes to figure out if it will accept the paper or not. Four or five tries will take 15 minutes. This is not good if you are printing at the last minute. My advice is buy the HP paper. The edges are taped, not glued. You can untape it with out damaging the leading edge of the paper and then the paper will feed in the first time. I looked for a YOUTube video on the feeding of the paper. I found videos of printing, but no set up or paper feeding. If you make it as far printing as the fellow in the video, you would have mastered the machine with no video.
Canon;
I don't know if they read this, but if they do, they should post some videos online. It would make it easier to operate. Seems like they don't care. The machine is nice, but where are their engineers? The Canon web site is lacking also. If you enter the ink cartridge number you need in the search area in the Canon site, it says "not found". How can they not have all their own numbers in their own site? Finding ink (on this size printer, they call it ink, not toner) may be a challenge. I could not find the exact same cartridges that came with the printer on Amazon. Like I said before, I could not find them on the Canon site either. I ordered several kinds of ink cartridges (on Amazon) to see which ones would work. It seems like Canon would care more than that.
Bottom Line;
This is way better than not having a 24 x 36 printer. I was driving all over town and not getting plans printed on time was a major delay for me. Now I can print at home. I don't have a handle on cost yet. but it pays for itself in time saved. I would buy it again, but I wish the Canon people had some common sense, as far as making operation user friendly. I don't want to be negative. I am really happy with this purchase. As you can see by the 5 stars. There was nothing affordable even 2 years ago. Hope this was helpful.

2the honeymoon is over
By Larry W. Larson
This below average rating comes from loving the printer for 2 years (5 stars) minus all the headaches and expense (-4 stars)incurred lately from replacement parts, plus 1 star of hope from the Wiki Community.

Briefly, the yellow ink tank was low but I wasn't concerned because I only needed to print in black. Deadline looming, the yellow ran out, printer on strike; no yellow, no print. Ordered replacement ink and installed it. Now there's a hardware error followed by multiple head cleanings and "replace print head" message.

Foolishly thinking that a print head should last more than two years, I went to the "replace print head" option so that I could examine the head and maybe in the process reset something that was amiss. Doing so sucked up 1/4 of all the ink in my previously full tanks, or about $100 worth of ink, and didn't change the error message. Multiple cleanings sucked up more ink.

Canon tech support helped me determine that the cyan portion of the print head was clogged. Why? because I had been away for 2 1/2 weeks: "Canon recommends that you use the printer at least once a week so that the ink doesn't dry and clog the nozzles." Take note everyone: DO NOT GO ANYWHERE FOR MORE THAN A WEEK. Stay with your printer! Forget about business travel, vacations and family emergencies. Man your Canons!

No cyan, no print, not even black. Clean the print head? "Canon does not recommend using any kind of chemicals to clean the print head because it may damage the printer." What part exactly does it damage? "Canon does not recommend...." New print head: $600. This is more that half the cost of the entire machine. It's like buying a new car for $30K, having the fuel injection system fail after two years and needing to pay $16K for the new parts alone.

Print head installed but, oh yeah, what about all that overpriced ink sucked from my tanks? Maintenance cartridge is full, says the display now. Printer no print no way no how with full maintenance cartridge... but don't try to clean - must buy new, new, NEW: $70.

The second and brightest star in this review is the help offered by the likes of canonipf and other sites. I moved from HP because they were pulling this kind of stuff. Turns out you CAN clean the print head and you CAN clean and reset the maintenance cartridge - with a little monkey wrenching. Eventually big information will put an end to this type of corporate con but, in the meantime, and with some research, you can make this otherwise very nice printer work for you.

1Canon ipf605 printer
By Mike
This Canon worked great for a little over a year, now it is stuck on a print head error. I have installed 2 new print heads, 2 new maintenance cartridges and all new ink cartridges and it is still stuck on print head error. Have had a local company here 3 times and no one can fix this problem. Also had Canon support work on this and they can't fix it.
I guess it trash and time for a new printer.

5Pro9500 using Canon Museum Etching Paper
By Lawrence T. Bailey
I too, ordered this printer before it came out. When it finally arrived, I immediately started printing some landscape pictures that I was anxious to see in large format. I had purchased the Canon 13"x19" Variety Pack to get an idea of which paper worked best with this printer. I immediately settled on the Fine Art Museum Etching paper. The depth of the images when used with this pigment printer is just amazing. They come out looking like oil paintings. I have printed over 100 of these pictures using this paper and have never been disappointed with the results. The cost per print is not cheap, but I think the quality of the prints makes it well worthwhile.

The only problem I have encountered with the printer occured about 10 days after I received it when it completely died. A call to Canon Tech Support quickly determined that it needed to be replaced. I had the replacement two days later and returned the defective unit with no problems.

I just love this printer using this particular paper. I agree that printing to glossy paper did not produce terrific results, but I seldom print to glossy paper anyway.

2Gloss Differential Problem
By DSP
When this printer was announced by Canon, I was excited and couldn't wait to buy it. The workflow and features are so apealing but it has gloss problem. Let me give a bit of a background.

When Epson 2200 came out, I rushed to store and bought it and found out that when printed on a premium glossy paper (simigloss and premium luster ok), the deep black parts of the photo are matted and when viewed in angle from the side the black parts appear almost negative. The paper itself is undoubtedly glossy but the gloss is gone once printed. (Yes, I selected the right type of paper in the print option.) Later, I bought a smaller Epson printer R800, the problem has been solved because the gloss-optimizer ink has been added.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because I think Canon is playing catch up with Epson. Canon PIXMA Pro9500 has exactly the same problem as Epson 2200. The glossy paper become dull once printed. The black parts are matted and you can see discontinuity. It's almost like somebody colors the black parts by hand with matted ink.

This is the most expensive printer on the PIXMA PRO PROFESSIONAL INKJET PRINTER product line. The reason I bought this printer is because I want to be able to print true B&W photos. Epson R800 has a problem mixing colors so a B&W photo comes out very unpredictably sometimes with warm tone, others with cool tone - never true B&W. PIXMA 9500 does a decent job because it has gray, matte black and photo black ink. B&W and gray come out beautifully, the problem with the black parts being matted is still there but less (than color photos).

ICC profile works well. It automatically detects embeded color profile. Easy Print Pro software (both stand-alone and plugin for photoshop) works great and very intuitively. I printed Canon RAW (cr2) with Adobe RGB color profile in Photoshop the color comes out very accurate.

I won't review other features because they are great. However, I can't get pass that the print quality is poor. For $850, this is a major rip off.

I don't recommend this printer to digital photographers.

Note:
I just did more research and found that only Epson R800 and R1800 and HP Z series have a gloss optimizer which eliminates this very gloss differential problem. Both Epson R800 and R1800 are not designed for B&W photos. Epson R2400 will do B&W but it has the same gloss differential problem. I guess we can't have it all. For $850, Canon PIXMA Pro 9500 should have included a gloss opitmizer in this model design. I should have researched thoroughly before I bought this printer.

3Poor print quality on Glossy paper
By G. Jones
I purchased this printer when if first came out. Very few reviews were available then. I have been very disappointed in print quality on glossy paper, even Canon's own Photo Paper Plus Glossy.

I had some cheap paper from local office supply store laying around (Staples Photo Supreme Satin). The Pro9500 does print very well on this Satin paper which is kinda a smooth matte paper.

Another paper that I found printed well with the Pro9500 is Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl Paper. (Download the ICC profile from Ilford.com) Again this is a smooth matte type paper, not glossy.

Another thing you have to watch out for with the Pro9500, not all inkjet printer paper is compatible with pigmented inks.

Previously I would edit my photos in Photoshop and save to .jpg and take them down to my local photo lab for printing. I purchased this Pro9500 so I would have more control over my prints. I can't get any decent prints on glossy paper, which in my humble opinon gives the best color. Prints onto Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy paper and other brands of glossy paper look dull and the the black ink seems to print too heavy with no detail in the dark areas and shadows. Colors are muted on glossy paper.

The owners manual is on CD-rom and doesn't give any advice on how to print from Photoshop or other imaging programs. It only shows how to print from Canon's Easy Print plug in for Photoshop which is a joke.

I had lots of difficulting trying to get good prints from Photoshop. Finally found a video podcast from Russell Brown that explained how to set up Photoshop to print and what controls to turn off in the print driver. Also the Canon ICC profiles use very short names (SG1, SG3, SP1, SP3, MP1,,,etc) that make selecting the correct paper and print quality very difficult. Why couldn't they just name their ICC profiles "Photo Paper Plus Semi-Gloss High quaility" instead of SG1.

I do not recommend this printer to anyone that wants to print on glossy paper. If you like matte paper and want the so called longer print life of the pigmented inks then the Pro9500 is a fair printer. Considering the printer only prints well on one type of paper the price is very high.

I have been a Canon fan since the 1970's. I own the Canon Digital Rebel, Canon 20D and the new Canon Eos 1D Mark III which rocks. This is the first time Canon has disappointed me.

5State of the Art

By Howard W.

I'll start with a short review since I just got the printer and have only run 5 prints through it. I will update in a week or so with more information.

Setup and installation was easy. I have it on my network for my Windows machines and it is connected directly to my Mac Pro. The install documentation said to get the latest driver for Leopard off of their site, which I did and installed with no problem. The latest Windows driver was on the installation CD.

The reason I called this review "State of the Art" is Epson developed Radiance, the new color-matching technology built into the R1900. This is the first printer with it, even the current Epson Pro printers don't have it. [...] has an article about it.

The few pictures I have printed are beautiful and they printed very fast.

I printed 3 on Epson's Ultra Premium luster 8.5 x 11 paper using Photoshop CS2. I tried different settings for each print of the same standard color matching target. All three printed very nice and as expected, a little different. Using "Photoshop Determines Colors", "Printer Determines Colors" and "No Color Management", with appropriate settings on the printer driver. So it will be up to you to decide which settings you want to use.

Next, as a test I printed a photo, of my daughter, on plain HP Bright White paper. WOW, is all I can say. Plain paper and it looked great.

For my last test I picked a random paper size, 12" x 12", that I cut from a 13" x 19" sheet of matte paper. I changed the paper size in the driver and printed. No problem, it printed just fine and also was beautiful.

I plan on getting a roll of paper too. I've wanted to print some banners, something I couldn't do with my current Canon I9900.

So far it is everything I expected it to be. However, I do plan on keeping the I9900 because sometimes I know I will want a dye (not pigment) print (and I still have Canon ink and paper left).

I will post more soon.

Update 3-10-08:

I have been playing with the settings on the driver to see which I like best. It is a good/bad thing that there are so many settings to play with. I figure I will eventually figure out which I like best. There are subtle differences in color, skin tones and gray scales on the gray scales. If you are interested in the test targets, you can download the printer test images I used from [...]

I will start printing some of my real pictures to compare with the I9900 versions. So I will post another update in a week or two.

I tried a roll in the printer. It was surprising easy to set up and use. You put the holders on the roll, mount it on the back of the printer, then feed the paper into the printer in the slot on the back. The printer recognizes you are doing it, then grabs the paper to feed in to the proper starring point.

If you print multiple images, the printer spaces them 1" apart. Unfortunately, Epson still has it's artificial limit length of 44". There are expensive RIPs (raster image processors) that will allow you to printer longer images, but unless you are going to do this a lot, it can't be worth it. The cheapest I found is $500.

I've decided that I probably will not use the "roll" on the printer. I want to printer banners every so often, but to use the roll for one print wastes about 10" of paper. That is the initial feed of about 4" and when you cut it on the back to free it, another 6". If you are printing many prints on a roll, then it will be worth it and easier. I suggest (and what I did in my second test), was just cut a 44" of paper (from the roll) and feed it though the (normal) auto paper feeder and that worked fine for the banner without any waste.

As for ink usage, I've hardly made a dent with the 10 8x10s, 1 12x12, 3 8.5 x 44 prints I've made. The banners were not printed at high resolution to save ink for my testing. I love Amazon, but it's ink prices for this printer are currently way out of line. Even the Epson store has them for way less. I hope that changes soon.

Update 3-26-08 (my last update).
After printing 25 more 8x10 high resolution (and in slow mode for better quality), I finally ran out of ink in one cartridge (and it was the gloss optimizer). After more reading, I think I used the wrong setting for the gloss and was wasting it on white area outside of the image. I'm still learning.

Some of the other inks are pretty low, so I have stocked up.

I still have not printed on a DVD/CD yet, but I'm sure that will be fine.

There is not much more for me to say except I am very happy with this purchase and expect to use this printer for the next 3-4 years, when I'm sure something else out there will get my attention.

Update 3-22-11
Epson just announced the R3000. By the specs, it looks to be the replacement for the R1900. The list price of the R3000 is $850 but the R3000 comes with and uses the Epson UltraChrome K3 ink set, which are the larger inks that cost $40-$50, but are 8x larger than the R1900 inks, which meant to me when I got the R3880 (that use the same ink), that the savings in ink will pay for the printer over the R1900.

1Think twice about buying this printer.

By NO MORE EPSONS

I'd think seriously before buying this printer. I purchased this printer about 6 weeks ago after NAPP members were offered a discount. I purchased it directly from the Epson Store. I watched the video tutorials on how to get the best results using the R1900 and printing out of Lightroom that were provided on [...] I was DELIGHTED at the output and the quality. Never had my printer output so closely matched that of my calibrated monitor, and the 13x19 inch glossies were stunning. I was THRILLED...

UNTIL...about 5 weeks after purchasing the printer I had to replace the Gloss Optimizer cartridge. This runs out fairly quickly as it is applied to the entire photo regardless of colors. Fine, I had extra genuine Epson cartridges I had purchased from a national retailer. Even though it was the correct cartridge the printer would not recognize it, then remembering that Epson had sent an extra Gloss cartridge, I dug it out thinking I had indeed bought the wrong one. I replaced it with the one Epson sent and all was good. I confirmed I had the RIGHT cartridge, and chalked it up to a defective cartridge. No biggy, it happens...THEN the Cyan ran out. I replaced it with a cartridge that I bought directly from the Epson store and had the same issue. The printer says it's an incompatible cartridge. IT is NOT. I called Epson support on Friday and they said they would send me a new cartridge and that it would be 3-5 days. Fine, but in the meantime I had prints that needed to be printed, so I again went to a retailer and bought a cyan cartridge. Not recognized. I googled the issue and found that other users had had the same issue, and that Epson had replaced their printers with brand new ones. I called Epson again. They said that they would only replace with a refurb since I was past the 30 day mark since I purchased, AND according to the Epson Warranty, I'LL be on the hook for shipping the defective printer to them. Problem is, I'm sure this printer was defective from day one, but since I didn't print a WHOLE lot right away, the cartridges didn't need replacing until after the 30 day return was up,and consequently I didn't find the defect until then. I'm extremely upset. I now have a bunch of defective cartridges and/or printer, no way to print the work I need to get out, and the best I can hope for is to get a REFURBISHED printer to replace the BRAND NEW printer I paid for. Do yourself a favor, look at the Canon and HP equivalent printers. If you search for issues on Epson cartridges, you'll find TONS. Not necessarily with the R1900, but with almost all Epson printers. This is the first, and LAST Epson I will buy.

1defective ink cartridges= expensive paperweight

By K. Regan

I have had 3 incidents of this printer failing to recognize newly opened cartridges. The printer will give you the "out of ink status" and will not function at all at that point. I called Epson and was told that the cause was a faulty computer chip in certain ink cartridges (matte black, magenta were my culprits) and that they were working on it. The printer is only good if you have cartridges that work and Epson is knowingly selling defective cartridges. If, like myself, you miss a deadline because you naturally assumed you were being sold something that worked, you are out of luck. I will be sending this printer and all my useless cartridges back.

Update:
Was told that I could not get my money back, only another printer. This solves nothing. I was told to call Customer Relations (another toll call). After this person spoke with her higher ups, she admitted that there was a problem with a "batch" of ink and that they corrected it and they would send me more ink. If you notice, the first review of this ink problem on this site was back in August. That is a pretty long batch run wouldn't you say? I asked for verification of the problem and the date it was resolved. She told me she couldn't give me that. I told her about the missed deadline and that I could not accept jobs with this printer unless she could guarantee that I would not experience this problem again. She told me she could not do that and then graciously told me there are no guarantees in life. Remember, they knew about this at least back in August and I just bought my defective ink therefore they have been selling this ink knowing it was defective and this is the response I get from Epson. I told her I wanted to speak to someone who could verify the resolve date of this problem and I am expecting a call back.

update:
Rep calls and thinks I am concerned with tracking my new ink. I explain (again) the whole story and that I was waiting for verification of the resolution date of the ink cartridges so I could make a paper trail of my communication. He says this sounds like a satisfaction problem and he will forward to correct department and get back. This is the fourth department I have been handed to. Where is the "we tried to *&^% you and got caught so we will give you back your money" department?

update:
just got my replacement cartridge for the two defective matte blacks. They sent me a red cartridge.
I will update if I hear back about the exact date the ink was resolved.

update:
I had to call them back and was told basically the same thing: a bad batch, hardly ever happens, won't get your money back, and yes, there are no guarantee's in life( should be their slogon), and that she could not give me the resolve date. I told this woman about all your bad reviews here about the ink and she said that you are welcome to your opinion!
She is sending me a whole set of new ink as a bandaid to this problem.. and if one is defective, that's a whole set of worthless ink.

shame on you Epson!

If you must have this printer be prepared to have a supply of cartridges on hand and make a lot of toll calls to get replacements. Also, the roll paper feature is terrible. You must have it perfectly square to feed and it is very difficult to cut canvas square due to the fabric grain. Expect a lot of wasted hours and wasted canvas.
