4Wow, very fast! Quieter and cheaper to operate! (compared to the Xerox 8870)
By D. Frazier
Took about an hour to set up. I have now tested the Officejet Pro. It seems like a winner. Very fast! I can print about 22 double-sided pages in a minute at a quality level that seems professional to me. That's 10 more pages than I could print with the Xerox 8870 in the same amount of time (using the less-professional-looking Standard mode of the 8870). The Officejet has three print speeds/modes. I think the fastest (General Office Printing) is going to be what I use nearly all the time. The ink saturation is just slightly less in this mode, and I value the extra speedy printing. I have not yet timed the "Professional" and "Presentation" modes of the Officejet, but I believe that they are only slightly slower print modes.

Print-outs are not shiny like with the 8870, but they are reasonably crisp, and on the slightly heavier recycled paper I am using, the ink does not bleed through to the other side, or soak the paper. (On thinner photocopy type papers, this could be an issue.)

For color photo-type prints that need to look great, I will be sticking with the 8870 because the color detail and color separation is dramatically better. I will be using this Officejet mainly for black and white printing. The Officejet is also much quieter than the 8870.

One thing I have discovered on the first day of printing is that the standard paper tray (#2) does not accept legal size paper. Only accepts letter or similar/smaller. If you want to print legal size, you have to use the manual bypass tray, which only appears to accept about 50 sheets maximum. So, if you do a lot of legal size printing, as I do, you will need to order a special tray (#3) called HP CN595A Officejet Pro X-Series 500-Sheet Tray. These are running between $166 and about $210 right now. I wish I knew this when I bought the printer. But even with this surprise, I am feeling good about the printer right now.

I will be putting this printer to heavy use. I expect to add details to this review as I get more familiar with the printer.

UPDATE: I have now had this printer for a few weeks. The biggest news is that I am finding it relatively inexpensive to operate. I was able to make 7,643 print-outs in black and white using one 970 XL 9200 ink cartridge. My cost for the cartridge was $109. This means each print-out cost me .0143, or less than one and a half cents. This compares to .0186, which is my per-print cost for black and white prints on my old Xerox 8870 (I am leasing that Xerox machine and also have a $69 per month lease payment). In other words, my per-print cost is 23 percent less on the HP compared to the Xerox printer, and that's before the Xerox lease payment, My actual cost to operate the HP is probably more like 25-30 percent less than the Xerox printer. The only place that my Xerox printer can compete with the HP when it comes to cost is when printing on 14-inch (legal) paper. Because the legal size is bigger, but the cost to print on it is the same (with my Xerox printer), the cost to print may work out to be about the same compared to the HP.

And we are only talking about black and white prints here. Xerox charges much more for color prints: .086 per print. I don't know exactly what the cost of printing in color is on the HP. It appears the color ink costs a bit more than the black. But I'm guessing that if you found the print quality acceptable on the HP for color print-outs (I like my Xerox better for color), you would be paying less than half to print in color on the HP compared to what I pay to print in color on my Xerox 8870.

The HP paper handling has been excellent so far, with no paper jams. I had some difficulty installing the optional legal-size paper tray due to the configuration of my computer, but I was able to clear that up by making a call to HP for technical support. So far, I am very happy with the HP Officejet Pro.

5Excellent!!!
By Anton
This is an excellent printer. Very fast, at 70 ppm in draft (or office) mode. Very good color quality when used in normal mode and excellent color quality in professional mode. Of course, I use only paper rated color lock which is the one I would recommend for any inkjet printer. If the printer is "sleeping" it takes 10 seconds to print the first page, but after it "awakens" it is extremely fast. No issue with the printer up to now. I use a combination of Apple iMacs running OSX and iMacs running Windows 7 in my network, and the printer works perfectly well. I recommend it for office use (big or small office). Network performance is excellent and it has administrative features that help to save ink and paper, as well as access to the printer. For home use I would recommend the HP Laserjet Pro 8600 Plus e due to its higher quality when printing photos. If you have a home office and do consulting jobs which require excellent quality, large volume and speed, like I do, the X551dw is the best choice. In fact, I own both printers, using the 8600 for photos. Both printers highly recommended.
