Extremely flexible printer!
By D. Matheny
Over the past year, I've been searching high & low for a laser printer that was affordable, inexpensive to operate, and flexible. To be honest, I also wanted the option for color printing; but, in this case, I ended up settling for 3 out of 4.
The MS810dn was a great choice!
The flexibility was actually the hardest feature to find; and, by that, I mean the ability to print multiple media types from the installed printer trays. In our case, we purchased the caster base, the 2100 page tray, and 2 more of the 550 sheet trays. That gives us room for:
- 2100 Sheet Tray: Standard 8.5x11 paper
- 550 Sheet Tray #1: #10 Envelopes
- 550 Sheet Tray #2: #9 Envelopes
- 550 Sheet Tray #3: Fingerprint Cards
Before this printer, we had to feed envelopes and fingerprint cards through the manual feed slot on our previous printers - and that is a big pain if you do as many as we do.
The configuration of the printer was easy enough - and the manual paper detection works fairly well. We did run into an issue where it just wouldn't detect the #9 envelopes correctly, so we had to disable auto-detection on that tray. After disabling that feature on tray #2, we were able to manually select #9 envelopes and it started working great.
The other configuration issue we ran into was with the printer driver. We have this printer attached to the network and just used the auto-detected printer that Windows located. That was pretty easy; but, the driver came up with a couple of incorrect settings - like wanting to set the default paper type to 'Vinyl Labels'. On each PC, we ended up having to manually change the setting to 'Use Printer Setting' and it worked fine - but that was a hassle.
Anyway, after fighting with that for a couple of days (as well as some other random connection issues), we finally contacted Lexmark support - and they were very helpful, but unable to resolve our driver issues. Fortunately, we discovered that the driver was being installed using IPv6 - and it appears to run much better using IPv4. What we did was to just re-install a new instance of the printer (using auto-detect again), and we specifically chose the IPv4 port the second time around. Now the connection to the printer is rock-solid, and it also uses the printer settings by default.
Now that we've used the printer for a few weeks, here are the things we like about it:
- I already mentioned the flexibility of loading pretty much any paper size directly from the included trays; but, that is a definite plus for us!
- The ability to add on additional printer trays so easily, including the optional 2100 page tray is another plus.
- The output quality is excellent! When we print important documents, we use the 1200dpi setting instead of the default 1200IQ since it is noticeably better; but, the default quality is great for most purposes (like invoices and envelopes).
- This printer is very fast! We print a lot of small print jobs (2-5 pages), and it's great that they are done so quickly.
- The duplex feature works great. We haven't had any jams at all.
- The networking and configuration was simple.
- Cost per page is also excellent with high capacity toner options. The 25K page toner cartridge is a great buy!
Other than the setup and configuration issues that I already mentioned, the only real downside is that this printer isn't completely silent after printing (until it actually goes into standby). There is a noticeable buzz; but, I've found that it was a way bigger deal when we were working on getting it setup. Now that it's working, the buzz kind of gets lost in the noise of a busy office - but it definitely is there.
I also still wish that this was available as a color printer; but, I realize we would give up the toner capacity as a result. In our case, we would use that for printing signatures on documents instead of having to stamp them after the fact - and it would have been a big win. Hopefully Lexmark continues down this road of offering such great feed options in these small business printers!
Overall, I would highly recommend this printer if you need to feed document sizes other than just 8.5x11 paper. Even if you don't have that requirement, I have to admit that this is one of the best laser printers I've ever used - and I suspect a lot of small offices would be extremely happy with something like this!
