Basic printer functions great, software can be a problem.

I'm very happy with this printer. Its print speed is good and fast, it makes excellent copies at the press of a button, and what little scanning I've done has been trouble free. It is a solidly constructed office printer. I have owned it only for about three months, but it survived a move across the country without a hitch and I imagine will have a long life. Paper feed, network connectivity, and error functions all work very well. I don't think I've ever had a paper jam.
My only complaint is with the software. The printer comes with a disc of software that must be installed on each computer that is going to use the printer. On Vista machines, the installation program would hang near the end of the install. I had to call HP tech support to get the software installed. Their workaround was that when you get to the dicey part of the install, you're supposed to -- I kid you not -- tap the Ctrl key repeatedly until the install is completed. This worked but, needless to say, is not something I would've figured out on my own. HP has an update system for its software that automatically retrieves and installs updates over the Internet, similar to what Microsoft and Adobe do for their products. But the downloads often fail. Or they used to. HP has now issued an update for the updater, which seems to have solved the problem.
After about two months of ownership, the printer developed a connectivity problem which required a large software update that HP posted through the automatic update system -- but this was before that got fixed. I had to do the download manually, but I got it done.
I hope I'm not making this sound worse than it is. The bottom line is that the printer itself seems to be excellent but HP's software writers need to get their act together. At present, the software issues with this printer seem to be resolved. If it's any additional comfort, my experiences with HP tech support have been pretty good.

Good Machine

I have been a supporter of HP products for a long time. My clinet requested an HP priter and this is the one they wanted. This printer works very well but I am now leaning towards BROTHER brand printers as my number one choice in printers.
