5Owned one for 10 years
By K
I bought my HP1220c in February of 2000, and it worked like a dream for 10 years. A couple months ago, it started leaking ink and I had to reluctantly send it to the recycle center.

I used it for printing color product brochures and for everyday forms and letters. I used presentation paper for my brochures and the "best" setting for my output, but it also prints nicely on glossy brochure paper and photo paper. When you print from any program, the HP dialog box pops up asking you for your settings. All of the current HP paper choices are in there, including presentation paper, glossy photo paper, brochure paper, plain paper and there are a few more, but I am going from memory here.

It is very easy to slide in more paper without removing any trays or messing around with clumsy lids, just lift the hinged support that holds your printed pages with one hand, and slide in more paper with your other hand. It takes all of 3 seconds. When you want to change from 8 1/2 x 11 paper to 11 x 17, just lift the hinged support, and slide the paper guide over from the 8 1/2 inch position to the 11 inch position. This slide is continuous, it doesn't stick in any position, so whatever size you want is fine as long as it falls between the minimum and the maximum.

This printer was easy on ink, but you do not get separate containers for each color. Black is one cartridge, and cyan/magenta/yellow is one cartridge. On the positive side, if you have multiple printers and faxes like I do, it is confusing sometimes which ink belongs to which printer, but HP makes it easy with the HP1220c because the ink part number is clearly visible on the cartridge, even when it is in the machine.

I decided to go ahead an write a review of a 10-year-old product because it seems like a good way to say goodbye to an old friend.

Because it is so old, you will need to download your print driver from the HP website, rather than use the driver that came on the CD with the machine. This is very easy to do.

For those of you who still use MS-Dos programs (yes, there are a few of us left), this printer will print from DOS very well. I have a a 25-year-old DOS program that prints beautifully on this printer. All the Escape Codes work and the @Say commands work. When I first bought this printer, the HP website had a listing of all the Escape Codes, but I never had to refer to it, because it was no different than anything I had encountered with other manufacturers.

4A quality printer for a low budget artist.
By Victor Daworker
Warning: No custom size available for any OS after Windows XP. I had to install XP in a virtual machine, then install the Printer's driver within. Once set up properly, I have been using this printer vigorously on custom sizes from 11X10 -> 11X50 and it has been very reliable, print after print. The quality is not the best due to low dpi capabilities but hey this is an old printer and I love it! :D

5in memory of
By gw
In memory of my beloved HP1220C printer, which, through no fault of its own, has found itself "incompatible" with my snooty Mac Book Pro OSX 10.6.8. Don't ask me the source of the rift. They were happy, carefree, compatible for a year or so, then suddenly divorced with no explanation. It's not the printer's fault, test pages run fine. It tries, it really does. But even with a gutenprint patch, the Macbook won't even speak to it. I think the Mac thinks it's too good to be attached to an older printer (I suspect iphoto, which has always been a pain in the butt.) I have not yet been able to part with my beloved HP1220C, who serviced my printing needs so dutifully for so long. No way I'd just junk it.......maybe craigslist. Doesn't seem fair.......stupid MacBook.........

......in any case, I highly recommend this nifty little printer. Unless you have a MacBook.
