5Great printer for seminary (graduate school)!
By Mark A. Hunsaker
I'm a seminary student at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. We write many many papers for our classes. I needed a laser printer as my old HP LaserJet 1100, which in "computer years" was 100 years old, was about to give up the ghost.

But I really wanted color because I'm a visual learner and utilize charts and other colorful tools for my Greek and Hebrew and other classes. And, note that from a "cost-per-page" standpoint, lasers just about always beat inkjets, sometimes significantly.

Enter the HP LaserJet Pro CP1025nw. I first spotted it at an Office supply store. It has a relatively small footprint compared to the other models. I looked at reviews here on Amazon and found that the only real problem with this printer is speed. And for me, that is not a problem at all. Also, some folks suggest this unit is not a great photo printer, and I would agree with that as far as it goes. But please note that generally speaking, Laser Printers are not interested in being the best at photo printing. **This is a document printer.** That means photos in docs are going to look great. If you want to print photos and then frame them, get an inkjet.

Print quality is excellent, on par with the higher dollar color lasers. Wireless setup is okay, although I really wish these manufacturers would ditch the intrusive software installs. There are workarounds for this and once you get the printer's IP address set, you can run the whole thing via the built in Web server, just create a TCP/IP port on your PC or Mac, and just use the barebones driver. The built in Web server is great for checking toner status, etc., and won't slow down your computer with a bunch of software overhead.

I agree that speed was clearly not an objective of the designers of this printer. If you need fast, you are going to need to spend more.

However, it seems HP's objective was to bring a color laser printer to market that is less than $200 and still prints great...and in that regard they have succeeded very well! If you are someone who wants to print great looking documents that will cost much less than printing them on an inkjet (and look much better than those printed on an inkjet), then this printer is for you.

I'm quite blessed (and very thankful) to own mine.

4Great inkjet replacement
By zaun
Our family has been using the CP1025nw for nearly two months now and so far it has printed flawlessly. The size and price of color lasers have come down to the point where they are viable alternatives to color ink jets. We finally got fed up with our relatively new ink jet due to clogged print heads, streaking, wet smears, wrinkled paper and poor color saturation esp. when the kids were attempting (unsuccessfully) to print their homework assignments at the last minute before rushing off to school.

When it comes to care free operation with sharp, clean edges on text and line drawings, this laser performs far better then any ink jet we have used. The toner lasts and lasts (but it is also more costly to replace). The B&W dpi is 600x600 and the color dpi is 2400 but not quite photo quality. It's perfectly acceptable for one-off school projects, web printing and low-volume runs of color newsletters, announcements and small-business marketing materials where color accuracy isn't a top concern.

I really like the manually-assisted two-sided printing feature on plain paper without breed through. To do 2-sided printing, just indicate that you want "Eco-print" in the Printer Preferences and the printer will automatically print all the odd pages, then pause. You just have to take the printed pages from the output tray and insert them into the input tray, then press the resume key and it will print the even pages on the back-side of the odd pages.

This LaserJet is so small (even smaller than our ink jet) that it fits nicely out-of-sight inside a wooden cabinet only 18" deep and 13" high. Our cabinet has a door that protects the printer from dust and keeps the noise down to nearly inaudible levels. And, the wireless capability provides much greater flexibility in location placement, (such as in our cabinet far from any computers). It also supports AirPrint (from Apple iOS devices) and ePrint (via e-mail) with a firmware upgrade. ePrint requires outbound TCP port 5223 (or 5222) to be opened on your internet firewall. The printer does not support Print Apps because there is no LCD panel to display the app's UI.

This is not a replacement for a photo quality printer. While the colors are very saturated, its color gamut range is too limited and a bit dark in default mode. Both highlight and shadow details are lost and there are some color shifts that can make photos look somewhat unnatural. If you need high color accuracy, a dye-sublimation type printer may be a better choice. But, you can get near photo-quality results if you select the right paper type in your Printing Preferences and select the Color Theme of "photo" under the Color tab. You can even fine tune the individual color densities manually if you like. (We've only printed from Windows PCs thus far.)

The fuser is a bit underpowered for heavier papers unless you tell the printer you are using heavier stock in the Printing Preferences, (select "Card Stock" or "Label Printing" for example). When you do this, the printer will then run the paper through at a lower rate allowing the fuser more time to melt the toner into the page.

Conclusion: If you are looking to replace your unreliable ink jet with a small, low cost, low maintenance color printer for personal use, this HP Color LaserJet CP1025nw will perform very well. Just don't expect a high-speed, heavy-duty, photo-quality printer in this price range. And, take a little time to get familiar with the Printer Preferences for special jobs such as photos and labels.

4A FIne Printer
By G. J. Cederquist
I bought the CP1025nw in early December. I use a MacBook (which runs OS 10.5.8) with Airport and a Cisco Linksys broadband G router.

I used the CD provided for installation and found it to be a straightforward process with no bloatware. There was one complicated step when I had to create a print queue, but I figured it out on my own: not HP's fault. The wireless set up works well from any point in my apartment (max. 30 feet or so from the printer.)

I print relatively infrequently (maybe a few pages each day) so I didn't want an inkjet whose nozzles would dry up. This laser printer has good color, a fast response time and print time. Black and white text looks especially good. As with any color printer, the paper you use affects print quality as much as the printer itself.

I have not had to change a toner cartridge but expect no difficulties if I follow the instructions provided.

I also need to connect the printer to my HP Pavilion a1110n desktop which runs Ubuntu 10.04. Although hplip.com is supposed to provide drivers for this, the site has been down for over a month, so I have no idea how easy or hard that install is going to be when (if?!) HP gets the site up again.

Overall, straightforward set up, strong wireless connectivity and decent printing results. The jury is still out on replacing toner (how soon will I have to do it and how easy will it be?), on using with Linux and on getting over my annoyance that a full manual is not provided with the printer.
