Super fast first page

Never saw anything like it, cold start to printing in about 5 seconds and almost instantaneously afterwards. I also bought the add on media tray and absolutely no problems with the driver interface, hardware connection, etc. in controlling the add on. Even with different sizes of paper the auto paper selection works very well going between manual, first tray (legal or envelope) and letter in the media tray. Well design and a seeming solid printer (only drop the qualifierafter a couple of years of work). The text is clear and solid even under magnification. I would highly recommend.

Solid Product !

Having previously owned an HP LaserJet 4 I had high expectations from this printer and it did not disappoint. Using it primarily to print hundreds of pages of tax return documents, it has done its job as expected. It is extremely fast and the print quality is superb. I would strongly recommend to anyone who requires a high quality, medium cost B&W printer.

Previously, we had a color Samsung laser printer which was slow and used up cartridges fast. It also tended to jam a lot. After lots of swearing, we replaced it this year with the HP 401n and have been very satisfied. The HP is very quick, though a little noisy. The quality of the printing is great. I do not regret the purchase and would do it again if I have to.

Excellent SOHO Printer

I bought this HP M475dn all-in-one printer/copier/scanner/fax directly from HP after doing some, but not an exhaustive research. If you are looking for an all-in-one, there are several available options by Dell, Canon, Epson, Brother, OKI, and even by HP. However, most of these printers on the market are much cheaper and do not belong to this class. The difference is better construction quality and built for a much higher duty-cycle using high yield cartridges (more on this later). I looked at two additional printers in this class- Brother MFC-9970 CDW that did not measure up in quality of output, and Dell 2155cn which is a close contender. Dell's print quality is good, but my bad experience with my old Dell's continuous toner demand made me choose HP.

There are several variations of this printer- M375nw (economical option if you want wireless but do not care for duplex), M475dn (the one reviewed which has duplex and network), and M475dw (slightly more expensive if you care for both duplex and wireless). Note that this MF475dn is a network printer not a wireless printer. However, one can connect to it wirelessly if the printer is connected to a wireless network router- which is what I have (there are other peripherals that can make this printer wireless if you do not have the means to make a hardwire connection to the wireless router). Following the instructions that came with it, I was able to connect this machine to all computers and wireless devices on the home network (including, iphones, ipad etc) in less than 15 minutes. This was very impressive.

PRINT: Print quality is excellent, even when compared to much more expensive color laser printers. Colors are vivid and rich, and can easily be used to prepare professional flyers. The speed is as advertised for one-sided copy, two-sided is slower (about 1/2 the speed) but I expected that. I love the two-sided feature

COPY: Very good.

FAX: You can fax it from the PC or directly from the machine. I tried both and they work well. I have not received a fax yet, and have not been able to make it give me a fax confirmation, when sending one. Update: The new firmware update prints the fax confirmation automatically.

SCAN: Works, but slower in DUPLEX mode. Good for medium jobs (40-50 pages). Resolution of scans from ADFs is limited to 300 dpi. This was disappointing. For larger/better output jobs you may like to consider Fujitsu and Epson that can scan at the speed of light.

ADF: The ADF has been used a lot to scan documents- 50 pages (100 sides) at a time. It works equally well with copying and faxing. It has not jammed even once.

CONNECTIVITY: The printer is full of modern connectivity features. HP e-print allows for printing directly to the printer remotely using files of different formats. You can also print from and scan to a pen drive. The printer can also be connected to any PC using the USB cable.

CARTRIDGES: The cartridges that come with it have half the life of regular cartridges (1300 instead of 2600 pages). After over 700 copies I am still using them with no warning to replace them. Unlike Dell, HP cartridges have a reputation of delivering more than the specified copies and that seems to be true here. I will know how much better when I finish them. Though the HP replacement cartridges are expensive, their prices (when on sale) are very comparable to those of Dell. The black cartridge does come in a higher yield (4,000 page) and makes copies per page cheaper. Because of high yield cartridges used in this class of printers, the cost per copy is lower when compared to those printers that take only low yield toner cartridges.

THE BIG QUESTION: What is the cost of printing and is this the right printer for me? This gets a bit tricky and depends. I was going to purchase a HP Laserjet CM1415FNW Color Multifunction Printer or a comparable one from other manufacturers, but changed my mind after some long-term toner cost considerations. CM1415 is $200 cheaper than this model but uses only half yield (1300 pages) cartridges. M475 uses cartridges that have 2600 pages yield that cost 1.5x more. You can do your math. However, if you plan to keep it for some time and expect to print reasonable amount, this printer may turn out to be as attractive as the cheaper ones in terms of long-term ownership cost. Again, this can vary with the user. For me, the choice was very clear- lower long-term ownership cost with a better quality printer.

Finally, the best prices for this printer are on HP's web site. You may be pleasantly surprised if you do some comparison shopping. Overall, it is a very good buy. I will highly recommend this printer to those who are looking for something in this class.

UPDATE (7/26/2012): Some people have reported noise and print quality issues with certain applications. I noticed the noise in the first few weeks, but then it went away. I never had any print quality issue. The culprit was the set of firmware fixes that the printer applied automatically, after I said OK. If your printer is not set for automatic updates, you may have to do them manually. HP support forum has several discussions on this issue with information on how to fix them. It is a unfortunate that HP is mailing these printers out with known problems and not informing the customers of these fixes.

HP Got it Right this time

This is a great printer for the home office. It does everything I need it to do including double sided scanning and printing. The color is excellent and the detail of the print is 10 times better than my old office jet printer. I could care less about the fax because e-mail coverers that requirement besides who uses a fax anymore. The set up was one of the easiest applications I have ever installed. Just follow the instructions on the initial set up page by typing in the URL in your browser and you will be off and running in no time. Setup took about 15 minutes and that included a break to get another cup of tea. One bit of caution; be sure to following the unpacking instructions to get all the packing blocks out. I got mine okay but it could be easy to miss one by looking at the vague unpacking pictures.

Works well, printing in black and white only requires extra steps

This printer while it prints kind of slow works well for us. We haven't had any issues with scanning and the print quality is good. Setting it up on the network was easy. It also updates the bios when first installed so that's good.

My reason for not giving it five starts is that the product requires multiple steps to print in black and white. First you have to go to printer properties, select color, choose gray scale, uncheck auto color management and then choose none for the color options. The defaults don't get saved so these steps are required every time. Forget any of these steps and the color toner is used. HP should definitely make the black and white option available as a default.

If anyone has found a way around this I'd be very interested.

Great Printer Quality

The HP Color LaserJet Pro 400 (M451dw) is a printer that has it all. It produces terrific quality prints, at least for a laser printer.

Its key features is that it is wireless and does double-sided printing automatically. You can place the printer anywhere in your home or office and it will print beautiful copies. It uses 4 toners that print up to 2600 pages for color or up to 4000 pages for black with its high yield toner.

My previous printer was the C P2025dn which I owned for 3-1/2 years and never had a problem with, except for 2 jams in its 46,000 page run. I find that amazing! Yes, jams are easy to correct by popping open the rear of the printer.

I only have 3 negative concerns. This printer comes with 4 starter cartridges that print only 1400 pages each. When you are paying close to $500 for a printer, wouldn't you think that they would include full cartridges? The previous model noted above did come with full toners. Of course, HP does not advertise that these printers come with starter cartridges. You can only find out by reading the small print on the toner itself or noting it on the outside packaging. I could not find any HP documentation that informs the consumer that these are indeed starter toner cartridges.

The print speed on this printer rated at 21ppm is exactly the same as my previous printer. Wouldn't one think that 3-1/2 years later this speed could have been improved? The M451dw is certainly not "slow," it's just that I would have hoped for a minor improvement in print speed.

My last negative is HP's technical support. Although the install was simple enough, I could not do the wireless install on my printer using a USB cable as their instructions indicate. I talked to a technical support agent for over an hour who lead me into all kinds of sub-menus trying to activate the wireless feature. Eventually he gave up and said he could go no further. I hung up and re-tried to install software, only this time I hooked up a network cable instead of the USB cable as HP directed. It worked right off the bat and has operated flawlessly ever since.

If you're looking for a color laser printer you can always find one in the $200 price point. But the Color LaserJet HP Pro 400 series produces truly outstanding graphics. You truly get what you pay for!

Great printer for the home office and more!

I just purchased this printer through Amazon and received it today. I can't tell you how easy it was to set it up. Also, I had it connected correctly to my home network in about 2 minutes. I am using it with my iMac, and print successfully from my iPhone and iPad. It's quiet, fast also and the quality is nothing short of outstanding. For the size, which easily fits on my credenza, it is unsurpassed in print quality for brochures, general graphics, and text. I couldn't be happier with this HP quality product.

Simple to install

I purchased the HP M451DQ Laser Jet Pro 400 color wireless photo printer from Amazon, after reviewing other manufacturers and reading reviews of various items carefully. I selected the HP line because of excellent product experience at my various businesses. The laser printers, in particular, have been quite robust and provide years of trouble free service. i required a wireless application, to enable use throughout my office area. I was a little leary of the M451DW at first, since a fair number of reviews indicated that connectivity was an issue. Since i have a mix of MacBooks, PCs, iPhones and iPads at the office, I was a bit worried about this. No need, when I set up the machine and turned it on, I simply plugged it into my server, and off it went, for all of my "computers." I can now print from iPads, iPhones, MacBooks, and PCs. Amazing! The reason for the 4 star rating rather than 5 star is that the product shipped without full ink cartridges, and I did not see any indication of this when I bought the item (other than on one review). Seems a cheap way to start a relationship!

Very good printer, AirPrint is supported!

This printer is AirPrint-enabled but does not have its own WiFi! So the only thing you need is a separate WiFi-Router (or AirPort base oder Time Capsule) that you can connect to your printer via ethernet cable.
Then printing from your iOS devices (iPhones or iPads) works like a charm!

I like this printer because the M401DNE is:
- quiet
- fast
- simple (no touchscreen, no complicated setup process)
- economical

I love it

I had to retire my 12 year old Lexmark. It was still working, even with over 250,000 prints, but the plastic case was falling apart. Thank goodness for duct tape. I was use to getting 15,000 prints from one $80 toner cartridge so cost per print was one of criteria for a new printer. The other was it had to be "Airprint" compliant because I had just moved to an iphone. The HP Laserjet pro 400 series fit all my demands. The M401dne had the features I wanted, was priced right and the aftermarket toner cartridges could be had for less that $25 for the 80X version (6700 prints). Upon arrival, I unpacked it and set it up. I could have missed something, but I could not find the drivers on the enclosed CD, so I just down loaded what I needed from the HP website. The iphone went right to it like magic. The duplex feature on mine was a surprise. Have you ever printed an email that was 2 pages, but only had one or two lines on the second page? This thing prints that second page on the back. Since I would normally toss the second page, this is a big paper saving. Like a lot of thing you have had and enjoyed for years, (cars, boats, wives, laser printers) you wonder if the new one will be as good as the last. Well, so far, this printer is better. Smaller footprint, faster, more features, I am happy.

Overall excellent choice for the SOHO/Workgroup

Not perfect, but I'm very pleased overall. You are paying a premium to have a truly all-in-one device, but the M475dw is a well rounded duplex color laser MFP, and a strong competitor in its class. You do get some very nice features not available in less expensive printers. Build quality is generally very good but some of the internals show signs of a few cut corners.

Pros:
- Extremely simple install. Place it on your table, remove the protective tape and film, and power it on. The printer automatically registers itself on the network and you can download the drivers direct from its web interface - no CDs required.
- Print quality is better than expected. Brochures print in vivid colors and negligable banding. Photos are a bit on the soft side, but better than expected color gradience provides overall impressive results for a laser printer of this class.
- Negligable paper curl (some curl is expected in any laser printer)
- HP's ePrint service is superb, and allows printing via the internet, including from smart phones and via a large selection of free subscription publications (standard forms, daily news digests, comics, etc).
- Airprint support allows printing from Apple Mac, iPad, iPhone, etc (print only - no scan to iPad)
- Touch screen is intuitive and responsive

Cons (only the last item is of legitimate concern):
- Color saturation is consistent but the substrate fuses to a fairly flat, almost blotchy texture. In the end, the flat surface is better for photos and readability, but text and clipart graphics lack the 'pizzaz' of a high gloss (embossing) toner.
- print speed is slower than expected. I haven't clocked it but I estimate around 12-14 PPM - not the advertised 21 PPM.
- Extremely loud and annoying electronic whine when the system goes into sleep mode. I may someday call support about that but my immediate response was to just disable sleep mode - problem solved.
- scan quality is OK (600 dpi hardware, 1200 dpi interpolated), but "copy" quality is mediocre at best (300 dpi and very soft)
- touch screen is on a swivel mount and seems sturdy for what it is, but wasn't designed to stand up to the riggers of a family room with energetic kids.
- small toner cartridges, and toner is expensive. As a simplified cost projection, based on 2.6K page yield for the color toner, 4 cartridges (CMYK), and list price $114 per cartridge, that's approximately 17.5 cents per page. That's on the high end for a color laser, but that's why discount aftermarket toner suppliers exist.
- mixed build quality; the only point of legitimate concern. External components appear sturdy, but some of the internal components include some very thin plastic pieces. It should be fine as long as you're not opening the case several times each day, but if you're in a high volume operation and performing a lot of maintenance this could become an issue.

Printer is Great, Scanner Jams

I run a business that requires me to print both legal and letter sized documents in each print job, so I researched dual tray printers and decided on the HP LaserJet Pro 475dw with the optional second drawer. The printer itself works extremely well. Unfortunately, the page feeder for the scanner is unreliable and jams frequently. It doesn't matter if it's loaded with three sheets of paper or 30, it will start scanning and more often than not jam while feeding pages through the scanner. When scanning multiple pages, it will cancel the scan job when a jam occurs (instead of allowing you to fix the jam and resuming scanning). Also, the scanner frequently feeds pages in askew, so they don't scan straight. I've been using Brother MFC machines for the past eight years and never had as many scanning problems with those machines as I do with this new HP. I love the printer, but am sorely disappointed with the scanning feature. If you need to scan large sets of documents, I encourage you to consider a Brother MFC machine, or a separate page scanner.

Working great with Macs / Apple

I have had the printer for 3 weeks now, and not have had any major issues. I use the printer with a iMac (mountain lion), Macbook (lion), iPhone 3, Ipad2 and new Ipad. I have not tested with windows or linux.

Why not 5 stars?
1) many people discount 5 star ratings as fake
2) online documentation states there is an email scan option, but it's not actually present (at least for Mountain Lion)
3) printer reports out of paper when there is still some paper remaining in tray. Maybe this can be calibrated, but I haven't figured out how, yet.

I could not find this model in any of the local office supply stores, but i did test several printers using the copy function. By far, I found the HP printers produced a better image (also tried brother, cannon, and one other brand that i can't recall). I ordered this model as I liked the LJ Pro 300, and this is an updated version. Setup was easy and only took about 15 minutes, but did require a USB connection until the wireless was setup. My wife needs color printing for work, and both her and I have used the printer almost daily since purchase with no issues. I have printed using the mobile devices listed above with no problems, either. I would recommend this to a Mac user without hesitation. Apple software update contains drivers and/or you can download from HP (needed for Mountain Lion when I purchased, but I think apple is now up to date with the latest versions)

This printer does have a print from anywhere feature (basically web based printing) which I have not tested, as I don't have a need for this.

Cons:
Size: This is not a desktop printer; I would say it's medium size, but you should check the dimensions to make sure you have space. We have a home office, so it's not an issue.
Scanning: I have scanned both from the HP Scan utility and Preview App, both work fine, but are slow. I suspect speed is a factor of scanning over wireless, but have not compared with USB scanning.
Price: Not an inexpensive printer, but given it's features and quality, no complaints.
