I own the "N17" printer by Xerox, sadly, Intel and Microsoft do not like the idea that we cling to these older products, so they change the basic design so the old is no longer compatible.

Lightweight Xerox - though still a Xerox

I've read some reviews of bottom-of-the-line Xerox printers where authors suspect those to be clones of cheap Samsung models. This one hopefully is not. Works rather quietly and the warm-up time seems not unreasonable. Though not the cheapest in its class, it was priced competitively on Amazon. I have yet to figure out the true cost of a copy, but hope that it will be comparable with what I had for the old LaserJet 6. Software worked nicely out-of-box for three different OS's, including Linux. There might be issues with Vista (a fails to reconnect with printer over wireless network); in my case unchecking the "Use printer offline" box in Control Panel->Printers->Xerox Phaser 3320->Printer was sufficient to restore the order. I'm taking off the star for not switching automatically to a bypass tray, unlike HP LaserJets, but perhaps I just haven't been able to figure out a proper setting.

Excellent printer for home or small business

This printer has met all my expectations. If is very fast and prints clearly and crisply. Most of all, it is dead-quiet when in the ready-mode (not just when in the power-save mode). This was not the case with the Xerox 3600 model which I returned because it was too loud at idle, in the ready-mode (the 3600 was silent only in the power-save mode, however). When printing, the 3320 is not any louder than I would expect a printer to be. Lastly, the printer is very well built, much better than most of the other brands in its class, which is the primary reason I chose Xerox over the others.

Economy, durability and a NIC at a good price

I purchased this laser printer after doing a fair bit of research on what is the most economical printer, with a good rating AND a network link. It was also important that the printer would work on Mac, Linux and Windows platform. This printer was what floated to the top. The built-in NIC is very useful - just plugin the power cord, a network cable and turn it on - on either the Mac or Windows 7, the printer is detected as a network printer automatically when adding a new printer. No drivers needed. Truly plug and play on both the Mac and Windows.

The unit itself is very quiet when in its power saving mode, with the only indication that its on being a blue light on the front panel. While printing, the unit is certainly louder - but still enough to maintain a conversation at a reasonable level. I haven't truly tested to see if I can get 5 ppm colour or 20ppm B/W, but I have noticed that from power-up to print it takes about 15-30 seconds and less than 10 seconds from sleep; neither numbers being an issue for me. Its a small unit that tucks away in a corner of the room nicely, and its tray takes a full stack of office paper. The one thing that would make this fantastic would be a duplexer unit. This is sold as an option for this model, however, the price nearly doubles.

To address some of the previous reviews, where Konica-Minolta stopped supporting the printer by no longer providing printer driver updates, I should say that for this particular printer, configured as a network printer through the LAN port, I can't see this being a problem. Both on the Mac system as well as on Windows 7, the printer is recognised as a Postscript printer, meaning that the drivers are Windows' generic built-in. I have never been a fan of using a vendor's own print driver since they tend to add a lot of cruft and little value (having not installed the vendor driver I wouldn't know if this is the case here), but I for one am hard pressed to see what difference the vendor driver provides over the PS one, and am of the mindset that there is none. So I don't think planned obsolescence on KM's part might not hit the 1650EN quite so hard. Just some food for thought...

In short, for under $200, you will have trouble finding a laser printer with this economy, durability and a network connection.

Great home office printer for the mixed operating system home.

We run several different operating systems in my house, and getting a printer which can support all of them is a challenge sometimes. This printer fit right in without any trouble. I had the printer unboxed, on the network, and printing from my Linux machine within half an hour, including time to deal with a broken software issue on the Linux machine.

The best bit: because of the Postscript print engine, and Konica-Minolta having the good sense to include Postscript Printer Description (PPD) files, the drivers shipped with the machine worked perfectly on my Linux computer. If you've ever set up a Linux printer, you know that just never happens.

If you have a simple network, this printer is probably plug and play. With absolutely no configuration on my part my main desktop was able to connect to the printer and print.

If you buy a network printer though, there's a good chance that you want to tweak your setup just a little bit. It was really easy to assign a network address of my choosing instead of an automatic address. I entered that address into my name server, and then it was trivial to connect to the printer from any machine on my network, by entering a printer server host of magicolor1650 (the host name I entered in the name server).

It really doesn't get easier than this. I've been setting up home networks for 15 years, and this is the easiest printer installation I've ever had. Plug it in, tell the network about it, tell the computers about it, and it just works. That just never happens.

Good quality printer, great output

I got this color laser printer to replace a Samsung CLP-315W which was junk (I reviewed it too). The 1650EN is connected via ethernet to a network of Macintosh computers. It has a nice small footprint. It is very quiet in sleep mode, mostly quiet between printing and sleep mode, and somewhat noisy when printing but don't chalk that up as a complaint. The print output is fantastic. The toner cost per print is above average but as it's not our primary laser printer, it doesn't get much of a workout on any given day. For such a small unit, the print speed isn't bad; grayscale output is a little quicker. I give Ease of Setup 3 stars, perhaps unfairly, but only because the company does not do a good job of updating printer drivers for Mac OS X upgrades--it took K-M not less than a couple of months to put out a beta driver for Snow Leopard (OS X v10.6) after its release by Apple, and figuring out which driver(s) to use/install is somewhat confusing. Anyway we got the beta to work and have not had any problems with it. I would buy one of these again.

Great Printer for an Exceptional Price, Grade A Delivery.

I bought this printer after MUCH research into the options. My purpose was to provide a replacement for my SamsunG CLP-600N that had served me faithfully for 6 YEARS. I hope this model is as reliable. I'll post back if I experience any issues.

So far, the promised quality of color, clarity and usefulness for true photographic prints aren't hype, this little printer delivers. Go Dell. I would have thought your days were numbered. It is super unfortunate it is made in China. That's my only draw-back for this little guy. Otherwise, he's perfect.

Not working - bad investment

So far I have been totally disappointed in this product. The printer worked long enough to print out a less than good test page but made a lot of noise during the process and it has not printed another page since. When I contacted the seller, Delnero Computer Sales, David assured me on January 24 that I could get a replacement for the broken printer I received but because I was going on vacation I requested they wait to send it after I got back on Feb 6. I've been home since Feb 6 and have not heard anything further as to if or when they sent the replacement printer and I am still waiting as of today, Feb 12, 2012. I had one just like it that lasted for several years so I know what it is capable of doing if I could just get one that works.

Worked fine... for two weeks.

Two weeks after deployment the printer ran out of toner (understandable). Bought a new Xerox brand toner cartridge ($249) and the printer says the cartridge is not a valid Xerox cartridge. So, we assume it's a bad cartridge. Order a replacement cartridge only to get the same error again. Call Xerox and they say we have to take the printer to a repair depot 30 miles away. I ask about upgrading the warranty to an onsite warranty and they say that is possible but I have to print out a configuration page from the printer to be able to do that. I explain that I can't print a configuration page because the printer won't print and the guy tells me there is no other option than to take it to the repair depot. I explained to the guy that there has to be a way to upgrade the warranty without printing that page and he says there's not. When I told him it's just crazy that Xerox would setup a system that would require their customers to drive 30 miles away to a depot when they were willing to pay for the onsite service the "customer support" guy tells me "Well, you had the opportunity to buy the onsite warranty when you bought the printer." So I tell him "Yeah, I have the same opportunity with the HP printers I've been buying. But I have never needed those warranties. This is the first time I've tried a Xerox printer and, thanks to your helpfulness, it will be the last."

big waste of time

It took tech support 1 hour to get the firmware update into the machine.
The network scanning software is forgetable.
The unit is not compatible with the scan to email function, with Google, Yahoo, ATT, MSN and Verizon mail. In fact no service using a different port than 25 on the outgoing mail server will function.
At this point that is the majority of the big email providers.
Save yourself a headache.

Cheapest to run, most reliable laser printer of all time ******

I can't really imagine why this printer doesn't have 5 stars across the board. I've used and installed dozens of these over the past two decades. They are UNBELIEVABLY reliable. They are super easy to repair (I'm a real klutz at this stuff and I can do it). The parts are plentiful and cheap.
AND--AS THE SUPER BONUS--they are THE CHEAPEST PRINT SOURCE YOU WILL FIND IN THE WESTERN WORLD. I can buy refilled toner cartridges all day long on ebay for $20. I get about 8,000 pages out of these. Hmmm...let's see...that's 4,000 pages for 2,000 cents. That's about 1/2 cent per page for printer costs (plus your paper cost)! Try to beat that ANYWHERE.
My current personal office LaserJet 4 (a 4M Plus, but I don't use the "M" or the "Plus" part) has a page count of over 300,000. I bought it (very used) about 12 years ago at a thrift store for $30. I replaced the fuser/toner about 10 years ago for about $100.
These are, quite simply, the GREATEST PRINTER VALUE ON THE PLANET--assuming 600 dpi is all you need. I mean, they are NOT color printers. They don't do 3D effects or animation. They don't fly. You've got to hold your breath every time Microsoft comes out with a new OS. (I print regularly from Win 7, the latest Mac OS, and a couple of Android tablets. I have NOT tried to print from an iPhone or iPad, but I suspect any iOS device will talk to these--no guarantees, though.)
Oh yes, one word on hardware interfaces. Most of these come with only the parallel interface, which is a dinosaur that died before many of today's computer user were born. But yes, you CAN still get parallel-to-serial converters for not too much (which means you can use USB ports). I do. They work. And don't even try to mess with the antediluvean HP Jet Direct Ethernet interfaces; the drivers and the OS support have not been kept current. So if you want to use this on a network (again, no problem--I do and have for decades), then just hang it off one of your computers. Everyone else on your network will see it no problem.
Final word: This is an emeritus review. I honestly don't know how long these things will continue to be supported in the latest OS upgrades. This MIGHT be the end of their life. But--if it is--it will be because the Microsoft and Apple (and whoever we decide is responsible for Linux or Android drivers, which means, I guess, US) drop the ball. I expect the HP LaserJet 4 hardware will still be percolating along, turning out is slow-but-sure extremely legible 600 dpi, B&W greyscale, 6-8 ppm long after I'm in the ground.
Ah, HP, you WERE once a GREAT company (of course, that was WAY WAY before Carly Fi).

The Clydesdales of All Workhorses!

I bought my LaserJet 4 about 15 years ago, when they were selling new for $1200.00, at an business auction for $750.00. That was an excellent price for it back then, and when I look at it now, I still think of how "I've gotten my money's worth" out of it.

This is an excellent machine from the people at HP. It just keeps pumping out page after page after page, with no failure of any of the mechanical elements. As a matter of fact, I've never changed out any of the working components, other than the toner cartridges. And paper jams usually occur when it is in the middle of a print job, and the paper runs out. When you print alot, it is easy to forget to fill the 250 page tray.

The manual feed allows for heavy paper weights too, almost to Card Stock levels. I run any type of paper, and don't see any difference in quality, detail or jamming.

I fill my own cartridges now, only buying refurbed replacements every once in a while, and have gotten the cost down to half a cent per page. And the quality is the same as a HP Toner.

Con: The main item is the size and weight of the unit. It is big, a little noisy, and power hungry, but the positives outweigh the negatives. Find a corner for it, and it'll be fine.

If you can get one of these, and the Test Page shows clean, crisp lettering, the page count is not in the millions, and the interior clean, with a clear service history, then you should consider buying it.

I am still happy with it, won't let it go, and bought another HP, the OfficeJet Pro 8870, and that works like a Champ too.

A workhorse

HP set the standard for laser printing. The first true workhorse in the family was the LaserJet II, a 300-dpi printer that wouldn't quit and was relatively easy to get into and repair. In addition, it became so popular that almost every piece of software that offered printing could print to this machine. The LJ III was similar, but the real workhorse became the LJ4, a 600-dpi printer that is remarkable for its age.

The basic 4 was fine, but if you wanted a bit more flexibility, the 4M or 4M+ (with postscript capabilities) were the better choice. Also, there was a model with a page duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page). The printer isn't small or light and it produces a fair amount of fan noise all the time. Memory can be expanded to 16M (but the cost is high for this older style of memory). The printer does not come with networking built in, but adding the JetDirect card is easy and if you want to access this through a network, then it is well worth the cost.

With a good toner cartridge, the output is as good as it gets for 600 dpi on cheap multi-purpose copy paper. There is no reason to use ultra-bright or heavier paper, even if you want to turn in some kind of special report. The print quality is outstanding and the toner capacity is huge compared to most of today's printers. Comparison against ink-jet printers, in terms of cost-per-page is just a shade over the cost of the paper.

If you want to print on labels, make sure you get the laser labels and feed them manually, one-at-a-time. If you want to print on a fancy stock, then use the manual feed tray. Even though you can feed card stock (3x5 and up), the printer's paper path will add a curl to the stock, which can be irritating when compared to printers with straight feed paths.

I own a refurbished 4M that I purchased from a local individual who refurbishes these things for a hobby. He replaced all the feed and pick rollers and, as a result, I've never experienced a paper jam that wasn't caused by something I did with the paper in the feed tray.

Even though the printer has duplex capability (the D models), I do not recommend getting them. Duplex always adds several sets of rollers and increases the chance of a paper jam for almost any reason. It doesn't take a lot of printing for the duplex rollers to wear and once they do, you'll be clearing paper jams on a regular basis.

Finally, if you decide to duplex a page manually by putting it back into the paper try, it will pick up the toner from the adjacent pages when it is "picked" from the tray and cause "shadowing" on the final output.

But if you want a printer that produces excellent output for just over the cost of paper, and don't mind a slower print speed and the noise, then this is perhaps the ideal printer of all time.

If there every is a computer printer "hall of fame" this model (along with the HP LJII) belongs in it.
