I own the "N17" printer by Xerox, sadly, Intel and Microsoft do not like the idea that we cling to these older products, so they change the basic design so the old is no longer compatible.

Lightweight Xerox - though still a Xerox

I've read some reviews of bottom-of-the-line Xerox printers where authors suspect those to be clones of cheap Samsung models. This one hopefully is not. Works rather quietly and the warm-up time seems not unreasonable. Though not the cheapest in its class, it was priced competitively on Amazon. I have yet to figure out the true cost of a copy, but hope that it will be comparable with what I had for the old LaserJet 6. Software worked nicely out-of-box for three different OS's, including Linux. There might be issues with Vista (a fails to reconnect with printer over wireless network); in my case unchecking the "Use printer offline" box in Control Panel->Printers->Xerox Phaser 3320->Printer was sufficient to restore the order. I'm taking off the star for not switching automatically to a bypass tray, unlike HP LaserJets, but perhaps I just haven't been able to figure out a proper setting.

Excellent printer for home or small business

This printer has met all my expectations. If is very fast and prints clearly and crisply. Most of all, it is dead-quiet when in the ready-mode (not just when in the power-save mode). This was not the case with the Xerox 3600 model which I returned because it was too loud at idle, in the ready-mode (the 3600 was silent only in the power-save mode, however). When printing, the 3320 is not any louder than I would expect a printer to be. Lastly, the printer is very well built, much better than most of the other brands in its class, which is the primary reason I chose Xerox over the others.

Awesome Printer, But read this if you have a MAC!

This is one awesome little printer. I got it as an upgrade from my old Samsung laser Printer that was not wireless. Now, I thought my old Samy laser printer was compact and small. But this little guy is really the size of a large shoe box. It's crazy how small these things are getting. The Pages print out smooth and flawlessly in black and white, just like my old one. Doesn't make a sound until it's called upon to print. I had no issues with setting up the physical printer machine. That part was completed in 5 minutes flat. The windows installation was a breeze. Just pop in the CD, select the windows setup executable and follow the install steps. I wanted wireless printing, so I had to go through the install steps that required my network name and password key. I was printing my test page from my WIndows laptop in about 10 minutes.

Now for the reason why this review did not get 5 full stars. The installation steps for the Macbook were almost non-existent from the manual included with the printer and they were actually inaccurate from manual that was downloaded from the Samsung site. Furthermore, There seems to be no option to install from the Macbook via Wireless Access point (utilizing the existing home network). Every time, I tried to install the software from CD on my Wife's Macbook, it never provided me a option to do a wireless access point install like the Windows installation on my Windows laptop. So after reading through the Online manual, which was way better then manual in the box, and reading through some Mac forums where there users describing their experience as a nightmare to setup wifi printing with this very printer model, I was about to give up. But then I tried the following steps below and it worked! Though not via Access point, its an Ad-Hoc direct wireless printing setup, which was fine by me as long as it worked. If I had knew this method which was not described in any of the manuals, it would of take me the same time as the Windows install, but instead, it took me 30 minutes..:) Hope this helps the Mac Users!

How to setup wireless (AD-HOC) Network printing with a MacBook and Samsung ML-2165W Printer.

1. Setup the physical printer machine according to manual. Then connect it your Macbook via USB. Make sure the printer is powered on and verify the Macbook is powered on with wireless network Access.
2. Insert the supplied software CD and double click on the CD from your desktop.
3. Double click and execute to Mac_installer folder >Installer OS X icon.
4. Complete the license agreement and installation steps.
5. This will be a standard install without the wireless option. This is your only option. You will not be given a chance to do the wireless installation like in the Windows version install.
6. Enter in the admin password to install the software.
7. Once the software confirmation screen pops up to confirm your installation was successful, proceed to DISconnect your USB connection to you Samsung Printer.
8. In case you missed it, Disconnect the USB connection between your Samsung printer and Macbook.
9. Navigate to Applications > Utilities >Print Setup Utility (For Mac OS X 10.5 - 10.7) Navigate to Applications > System preferences > Print & Fax.
10. Click Add on the printer list (For Mac OS X 10.5 - 10.7, click the PLUS sign) and new display will pop up.
11. On the "Default" Tab of the pop up display, select or highlight the Samsung printer. In the printer name column, it should be listed as "Samsung ML-2160 Series (NNNN)", then in the Kind column, It should be listed as "Bonjour"
Note: DO NOT select the Samsung Printer with the "USB" in the Kind column. This Samsung printer - USB option should only be selected if you intend to print from USB.
12. Click ADD, then select continue to create the print queue.
13. Now open up any word document with text and print a test page.

Worked for a while!

This is my original 5 star review, see below for sad update:

I've had this Samsung 2165W monochrome wireless printer for just a few hours and here's what I know so far. (I'll post updates later when I have more experience.)

First of all, the price ($59 plus shipping) was very appealing, and delivery was super fast to my house (in Virginia) from Amazon's supplier.

There's not much in the box, and not much to assemble. You just pull off a couple of tape and packing pieces and snap in the exit tray. The toner cartridge is already installed--you just take it out, shake it up, and put it back in. No tabs to pull, etc.

The machine itself weighs almost nothing, and takes up about the space of a shoe box. Once installed, it needs only a power cord to serve all the computers in the house. It sleeps silently, and once awakened to print, it does so quickly, and with no more noise than any other printer. Then it goes back to sleep at once. So it's a very unobtrusive house guest.

Set up and installation is fairly easy. I am a clever DIY'er, and not afraid to wade into something technical; but I'm no IT tech by a long shot. But if you, like me, are happy to follow instructions and try something else if they don't work, you'll have little trouble. Here's how it went for me. YMMV.

I was expecting to have to connect the printer to my wireless router with an ethernet cable. But the printer doesn't even have a port for one. (Maybe that's what wireless means? Like I said, I'm no IT wiz!) I was also expecting it to provide it's own connection to my network (also a silly assumption, I guess.) Instead, for each computer in the family (we have 4) I had to connect it to the printer with the supplied USB cable, and insert the installation disc in the drive. I have a Cisco Valet wireless router; but it behaved oddly when I asked it to install the printer, so I gave up using the Cisco Connect program at all. The printer didn't mind a bit. Once connected to a computer (which has already been connected to the home LAN) the Samsung just found the correct network by itself. It did ask me to supply the network security key (whatever that is), but Cisco gave that info up to me easily enough on its third screen. From that point, it was just a matter of pressing all the NEXT buttons until the printer was up and running. At some point it tells you to remove the USB cable, and then the software finishes doing its wireless thing--with an occasional request for you to push the NEXT button, or make some simple and obvious decision. (I denied all requests to let it connect to the internet for registration and automatic updates, and resisted all other inducements to let Samsung spy on me. I'm not paranoid, just ornery!)

The installation software hung up and crashed once on three of the four computers, and always in a different place. But starting from scratch the second time always worked. So, in the end, I'd have call the installation a fairly easy gig.

Print quality is laser excellent, and now that anyone in the family can print from his or her laptop anywhere in the house--for $59 bucks--I'm as happy as a pig in mud.

I'll let you know how reliable it turns out to be, how many copies you get out of the toner, etc. But right now, it's looking like a darn good deal to me!

Update and down-rate: This thing has lost contact with all our computers, and no amount of rebooting or reinstalling will get it on-line. It is now only a hardwired printer for one laptop. Down-rating to 2 stars.

great deal

I bought this printer for $49 shipped from 'newegg' and I am one very happy camper. Easy set up, easy interface, prints quickly. Very simple.
I have a netbook (no CD drive) so had to download the required driver from Samsung's website, but this took only a few minutes to download and install.
I am using it with USB cable, not with wireless, and that functions just fine.
You can't go wrong with this in the $50 to $70 range...

High quality versatile workhorse

We've been using this printer for about four months now printing invoices and postage for shipments. We loaded up 6x9 heavy catalog envelopes in tray one, 200 full sheet labels in tray two (holds 500 sheets of paper but labels are way thicker) and 500 sheets of standard letter paper in tray three. We assigned the media to the different types of postage in our Pitney Bowes shipping manager and we haven't had to mess with a thing since.

With 12,500 pages in the toner cartridge and the huge trays it's a long time between reloads and we haven't had a single jam, warning or error so far.

Excellent business printer

We purchased this printer for our work. It comes with two trays that fit 500 sheets per tray, even though the photo only shows the printer with one tray. I was worried that I was only buying the printer with one tray, but I researched it and the product number matched the two tray model. So I was relieved when it was the model with two trays. It is very fast and prints well. Setup was easy. We ended up buying 9 of these printers and it was well worth the money. This printer is a work horse. Was delivered very fast. Amazon had the cheapest price on these printers when I was looking.

HP LaserJet 1160 is a feature-stripped version of LaserJet 1320, replacing LaserJet 1150 and LaserJet 1300, respectively. 1160 and 1320 share the same engine and chassis (1320 features white-with-black-accents whereas 1160 is all-white). Perhaps the most dramatic change from 1150 and 1300 is a redesigned chassis. They no longer resemble DeskJet's L-shape box with protruding input paper tray, infamous for causing paper to curl up if many sheets are stacked on its output bin. Both 1160 and 1320 now look more professional and spiffier, all the while occupying even less desk space.

More subtle but just as dramatic is improved print quality. 1150 and 1300 were criticized for worse print quality than their predecessor (LaserJet 1200). 1160 restores the former glory with improved print quality. Graphics and photo outputs look noticeably smoother than LaserJet 1150 and 1300 with less noticeable dithering. Text looks sharp, and it looks slightly better defined in 600 dpi with FastRes 1200 turned off (graphics look far better with it turned on, however).

If you need more reasons to justify 10% price increase over 1150, how about 10% faster print speed? With double the memory (16 MB vs. 8 MB) and smaller footprint (measures about 14 inches by 14 inches vs. 16 inches by 19 inches), 1160 represents a superior value.

That said, 1160 could've been better. 1160 loses 1150's 10-sheet multipurpose input tray (1160 accepts only 1 sheet at a time). And multipurpose single sheet input tray feels a bit flimsy, although 250-sheet input tray feels very sturdy and should last a long time. And according to HP, 1160 can accept only the standard capacity toner (prints 2,500 pages at 5% coverage). Also disappointing are LED status lights (LCD alphanumeric display would have been more informative).

I have 1160 connected to Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station (via USB port) so that I can print wirelessly. Apple PowerBook G4 (Mac OS X 10.3.5), IBM ThinkPad A31 (Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2), and Compaq Presario X1000 (Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2) notebooks share the network and printer.

Included Windows installer did not make installation process any easy. If the printer is NOT directly connected to the computer via USB or parallel port, it will not let you install the driver (Mac OS X installer is more forgiving). Network detect feature did not work and I suspect it works only with JetDirect option. After reading the manual on the CD, I have discovered a workaround. Manually add the printer as a local printer, create a new TCP/IP port and specify wireless router's IP address (10.0.1.1 in my case), then click "Have Disk" to install the driver manually. The manual points to wrong directory path. The correct path for English-based Windows XP driver is English\Drivers\Win2003_XP\PCL5.

The driver is not any better. It is not that printer driver itself is that bad (although I have found few minor bugs). My issue is with hp toolbox, an application that supplements the driver. It is written in Java with embedded Apache web server (talk about bloated!). It feels rather sluggish with ugly interface.

A Superb Value

I'm delighted with this printer. It's wonderfully compact and fits in tight spaces. The printer quality is excellent and it really feels solid. I expect it to be as reliable and long-lasting as my previous printer, an HP LaserJet 6MP. This printer worked right out of the box with my Macintosh running OS X 10.3.x and I suspect that setup for Windows is equally painless. Yes, it's a little more expensive than comparable laser printers, but I think that over time the slighly greater inital investment will have been worth it.

Well, it will print

Pros: It will print. Easy initial set-up.

Cons: It has problems printing fonts other than Courier. The way the paper in the tray loads makes it a problem to print sequential single pages (like check stock, think anything already numbered). The manual feed slot is almost worthless.

The font problem is caused, according to HP, by the driver for the printer. It is faulty, and even though HP has released an updated driver, that does not fix the problem. As of June 1, 2005, HP's fix for the font problem is to tell you to load software from another one of their printers (which means you lose some of the funtionality of this new printer).

The manual feed is for one piece of paper at a time and is just a slot - no tray or feeder support.

There are cheaper printers that will perform the same functions as this printer, without all the font issues. If I could re-purchase, I would just purchase the HP LaserJet 1012 Printer again.

good cheap printer with one bad flaw

I needed copying and scanning. It does this. I am using it at home and did not need large volume printing. The one bad flaw is that there is no bypass for envelopes. I foolishly assumed that all laser printers had this. To do an envelope, one has to remove all the paper and slide the guides together. Even then I have never been able to make even one envelope print straight. Fortunately, we have a second laser printer in the house with an appropriate bypass for envelopes. If I could choose again, I would definitely not buy this one, but would keep looking and probably pay more.

Best printer I've used

Unpacking was not difficult but also not easy. I have a mac book pro running mavericks beta. Setup? What setup? I turned the printer on and printed a document from my mac and my ipad instantly just by choosing the printer from a list. Done. Fax? Simple. Scanning? I don't use scanning so I can't comment. Great printer.

Not wireless

It's true that this is NOT the wireless version, despite what the title says. There is a wireless version, but this is not it.

You can get around the lack of wireless support for the printer by connecting the printer to a wireless hub, such as an Apple Airport Express. That actually works beautifully, and it's what I did once I realized I'd gotten the non-wireless version. However neither this version nor the true wireless version supports wireless scanning on a Macintosh. I discovered this after literally hours on the phone with both Samsung and Apple. Samsung is unaware of this, and in fact its support techs seem to have no idea how Macintoshes work or what their own software looks like. The Apple techs, however, maintain a list of printers and scanners for which there is wireless support, and true to that list, this printer is supported and the scanner is not (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3669?viewlocale=en_US). Samsung apparently could fix this. But I am not holding my breath.

To scan, I have to connect the scanner to my computer via USB, which is a serious pain, and dropped the rating from 5 starts to 3 stars.

The printing is fast and the quality is high. The workmanship is very good. The looks are decent. The paper feeder is good, and paper very rarely jams in the printer.

Tech support is downright pathetic. No one seems to have any idea how their software works, or why I need to download so many apparently useless utilities. The driver system is mysterious, and no one at Samsung has been able to explain even the simplest aspects of it. Why do I need the Scanner Picker, the Scan Assistant, and the Easy Printer Manager to scan if the software that I'm told to use to actually scan is Apple's ImageCapture? (Incidentally ImageCapture doesn't work, but Easy Printer Manager does. And no, Samsung can't explain why I need something called Printer Manager to scan, and why Printer Manager does nothing to manage printing. I have no idea what's going on in their program management, but "easy" and "sensible" seem irrelevant to their goals.)

All that said, I actually like the printer, and if the scanner worked wirelessly, it'd be a whole lot better.

The FD is not wireless, the FW is.
Amazon has used the same copy for both items.
My return label still says "wireless". Very frustrating experience.

I love everything about this printer from wireless setup to easepof printing. This printer is excellent for home use like small businesses or shopping from home. Also if kids have school projects or paper assignments this printer can do it all. Printing 28 pages per mintue I hate I didn't get the color printer.
