5HP OJ 7610 Wireless Color Printer Scanner Copier Fax
By Sylvia A.
I suspect this is a brand new product. It arrived in record time, in perfect condition. It was easy to unpack, assemble and set up. I connected via USB port with no problem. The quality of print is exceptional and the printer has had no problem interfacing with my computer and the stuff in there from my previous HP printer (a 6-year-old dinosaur). The color is excellent. It does a great job on photos, spreadsheets, you name it. I also like the energy efficiency of this printer. So far, it does not seem to be an ink hog. The start-up cartridges did actually give me the number of copies estimated. This little guy is a real workhorse. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a great printer for home or small office. It also does just fine on heavy paper, card stock and regular 20 lb paper. What's not to like???
Just for the record, I don't do tablets, i-anything, berries or wireless whatevers; just straight-ahead slow mo dial-up. Yeah, there's still a few of us out there.

37610 potential issue to watch for
By E. Mirro Jr.
My new 7610 seems to do everything right except print on 4x6" label stock. It starts printing way up off the top of the page. If you have a 7610, maybe you should check it with 4x6" paper. It may be a design defect, or it may be that my unit is defective. I don't know yet.

The user's manual for this unit is in the Help file on the enclosed disk, which you can copy to your hard drive and place an icon on your desktop.

The help section of HP's website is a disaster. Links that don't work, search feature that is nearly useless.

Edit 9/24/13: I got a replacement 7610. It also can't print on 4x6". So I will try an Epson WF-7510.

If you want to preserve your sanity, don't call HP tech support. Just return your printer to the retailer.

Edit 9/26/13: The Epson WF-7510 prints 4x6" labels perfectly. I never heard back from HP tech support. It's been 4 days since they "escalated" my issue.

5Does everything!
By P. B. Sharp
It should be noted that this fine hard -workng printer does NOT have duplexing ability (printing on both sides of the paper). Most artists would probably not want to print their artwork on both sides anyway. and this printer is great for banners, etc. If you must have duplexing, it can be bought separately for $50.00 from HP.

The 7610 is HEAVY- 44 pounds in the box and an older person may need some help getting it out of the box and setting it up. People who salivate and get excited waiting for their goodie to arrive will be glad to know my 7610 was at my door in four days. The machine is easy to set up, even for a mechanical klutz like me.

*7610 comes loaded with HP 932 Black and the three colored cartridges, 933 Yellow, Magenta and Cyan.
*Power cord, phone cord (but not USB cord)
*CD ROM
*Set-up poster-instructions
*Getting started Guide

The directions say you can print sizes from 3X5 to 13X19 but I have not used the smaller dimensions. One reviewer complained the machine would not properly print 4X6 cards.

The scan bed glass is 11X17 and you can cover that area in one pass.

The document feeder is automatic and will hold up to 250 in the paper tray. The printer will tell you how many papers your current ink supply will accommodate.

The color buttons on the printer cover all desirable functions, the work flows, simply navigate. It's all right there at your fingertips.

HP ePrint allows you to print from your smartphone or tablet from almost anywhere (well, maybe not from the moon), using wireless direct printing.

The 7610 is an energy-saver. You can preset this e-all-in-one with Schedule ON or Schedule OFF. The directions say you can conserve 40% in energy.

I have found, with the exception of black, which doesn't matter, it's better not to use generic colored inks rather than genuine HP ones. If you buy the HP replacement cartridges online you can get a discount or a coupon or some perk.

HP's slogan is :"kick it up a notch." I think you'll find the 7610 All-in-One does just that!

3Printing, copying good, scanning could be better
By matthewg
The hardware is very good, the printing and copying functions work well. The software install was painless, but you will have to devote some time to proper setup. The major flaw with this printer is that when you scan, you must place your documents in the ADF or flatbed, then hit scan, then select remote scanning, then click OK on the printer's control panel. Once you've done that you have to go to your computer and initiate the scan. Even if you program the dedicated scan buttons, you must navigate thru the control panel of the printer with at least a five step process to get the scan to complete. On my old non-Canon MFC, all I had to do was put my documents into the scanner tray, go to my computer and click the scan button once to get the same results as it takes this Canon 5 or 6 steps to do the same. The work flow is not good, that's really why I gave it three stars.

4Great Printer, complicated network solution
By TimTech
Does a great job printing, scanning, and faxing. The issue im having is their new Esend feature is hard to set up and that is what made me purchase this product. The UI is confusing and the manual is vague. But if your looking for a workhorse this is it.

5Fantastic MF Printer
By Andy B
The Canon printer is a fantastic piece; it prints, scans, copies, and faxes well. Image quality on it is as good or better as the significantly more expensive Xerox Phaser at my office; the unit is smaller, a little slower (though not much) from cold start, and works well across my relatively complex home/Work-at-Home office.

The software is intuitive for what it's tailored for; a LAN admin in a small office. I have probably 60% of the options configured across the six PCs, two tablets, and two smartphones in the house within a few hours of work. It's not as simple as HP's home software, but it's much more configurable; that comes at a cost of ease. Some people like choices, some people like simplicity. I'm in the former category.

I'm addressing the software first because people seem to have had many gripes on that end. I'm replacing a Konica Minolta color duplexing laser; everyone who complains about the Canon software should step into that camp for a few days. Canon software is a dream by comparison.

On to the hardware; it's larger than I expected and is published. But, where it's at in my office, it's not a problem. It's quiet compared to my previous machine (which sounded like it was grinding rocks, from new.) Not silent, but quiet for what it is. Prints fast, crisp, and quiet. Oddly, the default configuration for printing is lower resolution and single sided; you can fix it, but why on a duplexing printer would you set it up that way?

The scanner is the weakest point; it has decent resolution, it's just slow. I didn't purchase it for that feature, but it's the weakest spot in a great machine. I need a fax for work; it's a good fax machine, and with the G3 specifications, it's a quick machine for that.

Durability is the only long term question mark, but it appears well built and solid. If it lasts as long as the printer I'm replacing (a 2003 Konica-Minolta 2430DL), I'll be delighted. Consumable costs are in line with it's peers, and my predecessor machines. People who complain about it haven't owned a printer in this class before.

Don't hesitate if you're looking for a SO/HO printer; this had the best specs, and performs at or better than I expected in all the categories.

4My first brother printer

I've had a variety of ink-jet printers over the years... ranging from Epson to Cannon and the last one was a Kodak. So far, I really like this printer. Seems to be really well made, and I like the easy access to the ink cartridges for changing (which, I hope to not do too often).

5Samsung SCX-3405FW: Compact, fast, efficient and quiet
By John Williamson
There's a lot to like about this Samsung SCX-3405FW Wireless Monochrome Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax, and one of the best parts was that it could be set up so quickly. In fact, I had it printing from a Windows 7 notebook and a MacBook Pro within ten minutes of taking it out of the box, and that was a surprise in itself.

The wireless connection was easy to set up, and once the unit was online and the paper was loaded, everything worked quite efficiently. For those who want the quick facts, the good and the not so good, here they are.

Pros:

* Very solid all-in-one SOHO solution where space is at a premium.
* Extremely fast setup with either Window 7 or Mac OS X
* Connects via built-in wireless 802.11; USB 2.0; Ethernet 10/100 Base TX
* Fast printing, over 20 pages per minute (ppm); verified
* First print out in less than 10 seconds from ready
* High-resolution black & white printing; about 1,200 x 1,200 dpi
* Holds about 150 sheets standard 20 lb. letter paper
* Prints on plain paper, envelopes, labels and other paper stock
* Auto document feeder (ADF) holds up to 40 sheets
* Fax modem speed at 33.6 Kbps (not verified)
* Warranty: 12 months, parts & labor

Cons:

* Built-in LCD display is a bit small at 16 x 2 line; hard to read

Details & First Impressions:

The printer was packaged very well, and it only took a few minutes to unpack it from the carton and review the contents. Its desktop footprint is very small; at 15.8" wide and 11.5" deep it takes up little more space than my Windows 7 notebook, and at 11.7" high it's not very obtrusive at all. It weighs less than 18 lbs., so it's easy to move. There was no real user manual, but here's one available online for download from Samsung. Besides the printer itself, is came with the following:

- CD software
- A quick installation guide
- A full network installation guide
- French display panel sticker
- An AC power cord
- A USB cord
- A phone cord (for fax)
- A warranty booklet

Did a brief overview of the basic setup, plugged in the power and the included USB cord (wireless would come later). The instructions indicated to shake the toner cartridge, so I did. Paper loading was easy, and printing the first documents from a Word document in the Windows 7 notebook with embedded images and graphics was impressive, with clear and sharp details and good grey scaling. Did the same with the MacBook Pro with equal results.

Tackled the wireless setup next, using the included manual. All went fine, but it's suggested that you have the details of your own wireless network handy for reference.

In Use:

This all-in-one printer, scanner, copier and fax system is perfect for the small office & home office (SOHO) environments, especially where space may be at a premium. It's extremely quiet in it's operation, more so than any office printer that I've encountered, and once can actually make a phone call without leaving the room when it's printing.

Scanning was tried only on the Windows 7 notebook, and with the software installed it's quite simple once you learn the interface. You just right click Smart Panel in the Windows task bar, select Scan Manager, select the printer you want to use, and then click Quick Scan. Once the Quick Scan dialog appears, you set the Save Location, the File Name (default is the date and time the scan is performed), and the File Format, which will be the default file type for each consecutive scan. Your choices are TIFF, PDF, BMP, and JPG formats. After entering this info, click OK and then click Scan to scan the document to the PC.

Will admit that I did not use the fax feature on this all-in-one unit, and for the primary reason that I personally have very little (if any) use for it. Scanning directly to email can be done, which is something that I find quite useful, as do the people with whom I correspond. It's nice to know that it's there if needs change in the future, but it's not something that I've done in years.

Copying documents is straightforward, and you can also prints multiple image copies from the original document onto a single page. The actual number of images is automatically determined by the size of original image and paper size. Copy speed is the same as printing (about 15 to 21 ppm in letter format), and there are a number of different options that you can choose. Just remember that your results will be in blank & white.

The original toner cartridge is limited, so plan on getting one soon. This seems to be an industry-wide practice now, somewhat irritating, but that's just the way it is, so please don't shoot the messenger. A new cartridge should give you about 1,500 printouts, and the proper replacement toner cartridge for this unit is the Samsung MLT-D101S/XAA Toner 1.5K Yield (ML-2165W, SCX-3405FW, SF-760P). It can be ordered here on Amazon or probably picked up from your local office supply store.

Summary:

Color laser printers can be very expensive, as can be their toner cartridges. This is a personal choice, but for color printing, especially when dealing with photos, I prefer using a separate photo-grade inkjet printer. For document processing, a good monochrome high-speed printer, especially if it's an all-in-one, is a far more economical and functional choice for daily needs.

When looking at this printer sitting next to me right now, the first thought is how compact it is, smaller than my old HP LaserJet 4L from years ago, yet far faster, much quieter and with far better ergonomics and controls. The second thought is one that dominates: this all-in-one is very quiet. It's one of the easiest printers that I've encountered to set up, and the results that I've been getting are surprisingly good. It's compact, fast, efficient and quiet, which makes it ideal for any SOHO environment. If you need an all-in-one and can forego color printing, this for the money, this Samsung SCX-3405FW is an excellent choice, and is easily worthy of a 5-star recommendation.

2An utter disappointment
By SM
I've owned many Samsung printers over the years which is the reason I turned to them again when my beloved mutlifunction printer of 7 years finally kicked it this year. This new variant has given me nothing but headaches since it arrived.

First, lets talk about the little pop out panel. It is super tiny and so are the buttons. I have really small hands and I think the buttons are too small, so I can't imagine normal man hands using it. It's difficult to read the menu and navigate. My previous model had a big screen on the top, so this is definitely a negative for me.

Next, wifi connectivity is erratic. It does it, but it frequently just loses connection for no apparent reason. I've got a whole network of computers and other printers which aren't losing connection, just this one. It's a pain to constantly reset it.

Another annoying problem is that the fax goes off in the middle of phone calls. Someone calls; I answer the phone; we're talking for 10 minutes and then bam fax noises screaching in your ear. Now I can't keep the fax cord plugged in all the time. I plug it in only when I'm going to make an outgoing fax.

And the most annoying factor, which is happening with all printers these days, is the ridiculous microchip that limits the amount of prints you can get out of your cartridge. The older models didn't have it and you could print until the toner turned faded so you get every bit out of it. When you consider the cost of these things it's absurd to limit the use. I'm definitely not getting the amount of pages it claims and it's stopping me from printing when there is most likely quite a lot of toner still left in the container. Yes, there are some hacks you can apply to the printer or buy new chips, however you shouldn't have to mod your own device to make it work.

So, it gets 2 stars because it turns on, makes copies, sends faxes and sometimes prints when it has connection to the network and isn't limiting my toner usage. It is definitely a step back in quality, user friendliness and efficiency that I had grown to love in the older Samsung devices.

4Good for Home or Small Office - Recommended
By C. Hill
This Samsung Wireless Monochrome Laser Printer, Scanner, Copier, and Fax all-in-one is a good choice for home or small office use. We are almost addicted to printing at our house and, with the demands of two students and projects for my wife's small business. Using an inkjet cartridge based printer can get very expensive, especially when most of the output is fine in "black & white" or grey-scale. This all-in-one allows us to cut down on our printing costs while giving us handy features like scanning and faxing. Here are my observations:

What's Included: Printer, "Starter" Toner Cartridge (pre-installed), Power Cord, Installation CD, Quick Start Guide, Installation Manual, French Control Panel Overlay (English is pre-installed), USB Cable (a nice surprise) and Phone Cord

My Setup; We live in a very old house that is not well suited to wired networking (supported, but cable not provided) and all four us use laptops on our wireless home network. After unboxing the printer, removing the numerous tape strips hold the moving parts down, reading the quick install directions, and shaking the toner cartridge (as instructed), I powered up the unit and pressed the glowing "WPS" button and then acknowledged the connection in my wireless router by entering the printer code shown on the LCD screen. The printer was then connected to our network in a matter of minutes. Next I installed the software drivers and management programs (Samsung Easy Print Manager, SmarThru Office 2, and Samsung Scan Assistant) on our PCs (Vista and Windows 7), and the printer was "found" quickly by the software.

Software notes:
* Easy Print Manager; lets you access the device setting settings and advance functionality (like Alerts, Scan to PC settings, etc) - You might need this Username "admin", and this Password "sec00000" the first time you want to change the settings
* SmarThru Office 2; Document management package, I don't intend to use it
* Scan Assistant; Presents a scanning interface (similar to the TWAIN screen when accessed from graphics programs), you can select "Custom Install" to enable "OCR" (Optical Character Recognition to save documents in "Text" formats)

Pros -
+ Small Size; relatively compact for an all-in-one
+ Print Quality; sharp and clear text and graphics
+ Print Speed; very fast printing
+ Scan Quality; full color scanning to the PC is sharp and accurate
+ OCR Accuracy; surprisingly good accuracy on the test pages I tried, very near 100%
+ FAX; basic send/receive work well, more advance features can be set in the "Easy Print Manager" options (address book, etc)
+ Copying; B&W/Grey-Scale works great, either single page or via the automatic document feeder

Cons -
- Poor Wi-Fi Reception; this seems to have a very weak antenna since it needed to be move much closer to my wireless router than my other Wi-Fi devices
- Physical Quality; the plastic foldout paper trays feel very flimsy and I am concerned about their longevity if they get "bumped"
- LCD Screen; this is the biggest issue for me, as it is very hard to read

Misc -
* "Starter" Toner Cartridge; this is partial cartridge that will not last long, use Samsung MLT-D101S/XAA Toner 1.5K Yield (ML-2165W, SCX-3405FW, SF-760P)
* "Power Save"; I extended this from "1 Minute" to "30 Minutes" in the "Easy Print Manager" options to avoid having to go physically "wake up" the unit between scanning jobs (a personal preference)

This nicely augments our networked color inkjet printer for home use and is generally a very useful multifunction device.

Recommended!

5Great cross-platform multi-function
By Bill
I have a network with both Windows (XP and 7) and Mac (10.5.8) machines on it, and was in need of a new printer. I was looking to replace a trusty IBM InfoPrint 12 which had been in use on the network (via a router with print server) for over 10 years (and only two toner cartridges). I even debated about fixing the InfoPrint, but I was not sure what it would take, and I needed a solution now. At first I was only thinking about a stand-alone laser printer, both in terms of cost and function, but then decided to look into multi-function machines as I also have an ink jet multi-function (usable only by my work machine) that I did not mind removing.

These are the criteria that I had in mind while selecting a product:
* laser print: for crispness and consumables (my ink jet seemed to drink ink, or it dried up)
* duplex: one of the items I did not like about the InfoPrint 12 is the lack of duplex
* compatibility across several OS platforms
* ability to scan via the LAN and not requiring direct USB

I was not concerned about the size of the unit, as it was going to have its own table (though it is quite compact). I was also not concerned about the fax functionality of the machine. While it is nice to have if needed, I had only used my old multi-function to fax once.

Taking these into account, I could not find anything that met them as well as the Brother MFC-7860DW. There are some higher caliber machines, but these were designed for more active use and their price reflected that. Some may think the MFC-7860DW is pricey, but there are others which are much more so. Since the MFC-7860DW are very new, I had some questions and wanted to see one in action, but I was not able to find any in stores. My main question was the software compatibility across OS platforms. A sister product from Brother (the HL-2270DW) had excellent reviews in terms of platform support, but I've been burned before on assumption, so I e-mailed Brother's pre-sales support. They confirmed that full functionality was supported for both Mac and Windows. It was time to purchase! I checked a few prices on-line and chose Amazon. Sure they were a few dollars more than the lowest but I like their delivery speed, customer support, and return policy (if needed). I also did not want to create (yet) another account for a single purchase.

The package arrived with some dents and tears in it (thanks UPS) but the printer was within a styrofoam shell and was unharmed. Unpack was a breeze, and the first function to test was copying -- looked great! Next I hooked it to an open port on my router and started software install. My Windows XP machine had some trouble with the PaperPort software. I did not have need to scan from that machine, so I just installed the printer driver and moved on. Full install on the Windows 7 machine went well. The full install on my Mac was even easier. The newness of the product insured I had the most recent versions of the software too.

Now that I have it installed, functional, and run bunch of paper through it I am glad I chose this one. Not only did it meet my main criteria as previously listed, I've come to appreciate these items too:
* a 250 page paper drawer (I do not like how other printers leave the paper exposed to collect dust)
* toner saver mode
* wired, or wireless, network capability (I chose wired due to the next item)
* super sleep mode (only available if on wired network)
* the separate toner and drum design (I think that it is good as they have different service lengths)

So, no negatives you think? If I had to choose one it would be the noise level. It is noisier than the InfoPrint 12 was, but I can live with it given the other benefits of the machine.

3Attractive & Fast.. That's about it.
By Litmus
I purchased this from OfficeMax not on Amazon.com. In doing so, I spent months doing research trying to replace a really old Brother MFC-420CN which I loved. I wanted a Brother machine as they are durable, reliable and don't wear as much as other machines (Always owned a Brother fax) - Having said that, this machine was a dream come true, it's inexpensive, small footprint and decent workhorse. Unfortunately the CONS outweigh the PROS.

PROS:
Fast printing
Attractive design
Small footprint for duplexer
Fast faxing

CONS:
Very noisy while printing
Flimsy ADF feels as though it will come off
Duplexer sounds like it's in pain (noisy and very slow)
Starter toner cartridge gives you 200 pages @ 5% coverage

Here is a quirk:
If you have this in WIRELESS mode, that is the unit is NOT connected to the router via Ethernet cable, the machine *always* runs, even in sleep mode. The fan will stay on and its noisy. The lights (deep blue) will always be on.

If you have this in WIRED mode, that is the unit IS connected to the router or USB, the machine will enter "Deep Sleep" and looks like its actually off. No noise, nothing. (Lights are off)

This quirk is hard to find in the manual but there it is. Consider the noise level which I ignored when buying this and now regret.

5The secret trick to turning off the "Low Toner" message.
By Agent86
I bought one of these a few months ago in November to replace my aging Canon printer, and I liked it so much I just bought another one for my parents and set it all up for them.

What motivated me to write the review was that I just had to replace the very low yield starter cartridge and the low toner warning with the message "Prepare New Toner Cartridge" wouldn't go away despite buying a Brother brand high yield toner cartridge (TN450), and I have found a lot of other people seem to have had the same issue. After scouring the net, I found the trick that isn't anywhere to be found in the documentation.

So let's get this out of the way right now. If you still have the low toner message after replacing the toner with a Brother brand cartridge, here's what you do.

1. Open the front toner compartment door.
2. Message reads "Front cover open."
3. Press the "Clear" button.
4. Message reads "Replace Drum?" and gives you a choice of Yes or No.
5. DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS. Instead, type in *00 on the keypad. (Don't forget the asterisk before the two zeros!)

This apparently resets the machine's internal page counter. You should see an "accepted" message. Close the compartment door door, press Stop/Exit and Voila. No more low toner message! Takes about 30 seconds.

Now for the review. What I like:

- Small, compact footprint.
- Works flawlessly from copying to duplex printing to faxing to wireless scanning.
- Simple to use.
- Simple to set up on a wireless network - don't even need to initially connect it to a computer to set up.
- NO warm up time. Wow. Even from deep sleep mode, it wakes right up when you send anything to it to print or feed anything into it to copy or fax and works instantly.
- Replacement high capacity toner cartridge (2600 pages) from Amazon was close to half what the Canon cartridge would have cost - one reason I decided to buy this printer rather than put $85 into a new cartridge on an aging AIO printer.
- Using the free Brother iPhone app, I can print from my iPhone!

The negatives?

- I didn't love having the low toner warning stay on even after buying their brand and having to scour the internet for an hour before finally finding an obscure, random post by someone who knew the trick for this printer - that YOU now all know too. :-) (There's no optical eye on these that you can cover like some of the previous generation Brother printers like the 2170w that allowed you to keep printing LONG after the warning came on, so that trick won't work.)
- I don't love that the somewhat loud fan that goes on when the machine is used at all seems to stay on for 5 minutes or so after the last activity before it goes silent.
- Lifting up the cover to place something on the glass could be smoother. It seems to sort of snap up and snap down when you get past a certain point in both directions.
- It's definitely a bit more flimsy feeling than my Canon was, but it's also a lot smaller and lighter.

But for the price and the performance, these are too insignificant to me to even knock off a star, especially after finding the low toner message trick. I bought the printer for it's functionality, duplex printing, the relatively low cost of toner, and especially its ability to scan *wirelessly* and allowing you to save in various formats including scanning multiple pages into one pdf document using the included ControlCenter4 software. Great for signed agreements you can scan and email within a few clicks instead of faxing. Lots of other All-In-Ones scan, but not wirelessly with this simplicity at this price-point.

After 5 months, I still love this printer and think it gives you the best bang for your buck right now.
