I own the "N17" printer by Xerox, sadly, Intel and Microsoft do not like the idea that we cling to these older products, so they change the basic design so the old is no longer compatible.

Lightweight Xerox - though still a Xerox

I've read some reviews of bottom-of-the-line Xerox printers where authors suspect those to be clones of cheap Samsung models. This one hopefully is not. Works rather quietly and the warm-up time seems not unreasonable. Though not the cheapest in its class, it was priced competitively on Amazon. I have yet to figure out the true cost of a copy, but hope that it will be comparable with what I had for the old LaserJet 6. Software worked nicely out-of-box for three different OS's, including Linux. There might be issues with Vista (a fails to reconnect with printer over wireless network); in my case unchecking the "Use printer offline" box in Control Panel->Printers->Xerox Phaser 3320->Printer was sufficient to restore the order. I'm taking off the star for not switching automatically to a bypass tray, unlike HP LaserJets, but perhaps I just haven't been able to figure out a proper setting.

Excellent printer for home or small business

This printer has met all my expectations. If is very fast and prints clearly and crisply. Most of all, it is dead-quiet when in the ready-mode (not just when in the power-save mode). This was not the case with the Xerox 3600 model which I returned because it was too loud at idle, in the ready-mode (the 3600 was silent only in the power-save mode, however). When printing, the 3320 is not any louder than I would expect a printer to be. Lastly, the printer is very well built, much better than most of the other brands in its class, which is the primary reason I chose Xerox over the others.

The Tektronix Phaser 850 DP by Xerox is a professional quality high performance solid ink laser printer.
Instead of using toner and fuser like most laser printers the 850DP uses solid nontoxic ink which comes in specially shaped cubes called "ColorStixs". The solid ink colorstixs are loaded into the top of the printer and can be loaded with the printer on or in the middle of a print job. Each color is shaped uniquely so that a color cannot be placed in the incorrect color well. It is easy as a stapler to reload. Safe and friendly, colorstixs cannot leak or spill. All access is from the front and top, no need to reach behind or rotate around.
The printer is network ready and can be used as a printer server. Installation through the network (connecting it to a LAN hub) or through direct connection to a workstation (using a parallel or USB cable) is very easy and can be fully completed within 15 minutes. The printer includes an installation CD-ROM which must be ran on every workstation that you wish to have access to the printer. The printer's install program, drivers, and administration programs are very stable and well designed so that they are very easy and straight forward even to very novice users.
The 850DP can automatically print double sided pages, labels, envelopes, transparencies, and on card stock. It includes a 200-sheet paper and/or transparency tray. Higher capacity trays are available directly from Xerox.
The printer's print quality is amazing. Up to 1200 dpi means razor sharp text and photo quality color automatically optimized for every element on your page. Thanks to the use of the solid ink technology it's output looks and feels exactly like a magazine page, especially when a high gloss or high brite copypaper is used. Not for the Occasional User. Great Quality. Low Waste. Impressive Photos. Have to Leave It On :-(

This is a professional printer, and is basically comparable to the Phaser 840 and Phaser 860. I chose this printer because instead of toner/ink they use solid ink. Basically you buy these cube shaped crayon that melt, and then distributed over paper to produces a superb, smudge free and waterproof prints. The ink is less toxic, in some cases soy based, and the consumables do not produce a lot of waste -more eco friendly.

POSITIVES:
great quality prints. Make that superb when set to print photos.
* great text printing, and very fast at the draft setting, which is still professionally acceptable for black and white
* acceptable print speed at standard settings
* double sided printing
* works well for both MAC OS X (10.5) and Vista using driver downloads from Xerox
* low-waste (see negatives) as inks do not come with metal and plastic pieces you have to discard.
* When you purchase original ink blocks, they come with FREE black ink! how nice is that?
* Network-able and single connection work just fine
* ink is cheaper than inkjets and perhaps a tad less than laser
* Though several sites try to sell repair manuals for this, you can get it free directly from Xerox at [...] This allows you to repair your own machine.
* Able to check print, with security time-out after each print
* Able to keep accounting by user/person printing
* With the optional second drawer, I don't have to constantly check the paper level like did with my HP Officejet.
* Expandable RAM (about $9/64MB if you search online stores), and optional hard drive (about $90) but frankly, i have not spent the time to figure out how to do that

NEGATIVES:
* Not very affordable if used in a low volume environment as melted and unused ink is discarded. To avoid this, you have to keep the machine ON all the time. The manual says, keep it at 999 hour time-out, which is the factory setting.
* Noise level may be too high for some homes, just as print begins and paper is ejected. Otherwise you have the sound of a fan at all times
* Manual feed takes only a single sheet of paper at a time (or envelop)
* Long warm-up. It takes about 10-12 minutes for it to warm-up, if off. From idle it is about 3-4 minutes.
* Printing a high-resolution picture at the photo setting (file size 4MB/12 Meg Pix) takes about 5 minutes
* MAC driver is not as flexible as Vista who offers more tweaks, which other may find necessary, but I don't.

SUMMARY
The perfect printer for a busy home office or a small (8-12 person) office.

This printer is now only available in reconditioned or used state. Given second hand prices of $200-$500 for one, they are head and shoulders above very flimsy officejet, deskjets, and entry level lasers. If you are going to spend that kind of money for cheap new machine (many of which now force you to change all toners even when they are not exhausted, purely based on print count), then it is worth your while to consider one of these.

If you are going to turn you printer on and off once every few days, this printer will not be economical for you -though print quality is still fantastic.

My eyes hurt

O my god, this printer is amassing. The color is very sharp and detailed on plane paper. This printer is in our school computer lab. They say the print speed is like 3.5 ppm on image resolution. But I would say it is about 4.5. It is the best printer I have ever used. It is a high mantance printer because you have you service tray, you will kneed to replace it every once and a wile, and the color sticks coast an arm and a leg but they last a very very long time. The only downside to this printer is the warm-up time. It takes about 15 min. But, there are upsides, like if you own a business, this is the printer because of the great out put and the blazing speed in normal color and b&w. This printer is amazing. It is well worth the money. I am 16 and I have ordered one for myself "after working for months" but I ordered it direct from okidata.

Solid color laser printer

Update 3/23/2013: Xerox has updated their printer driver to correct the power save bug. I'm updating this review to give 5 stars up from 4!

The Xerox 6500N is a solid color laser printer. The color resolution is exceptional for the price, offering near-photographic quality. The cost of ownership is quite low, with 4 separate color cartridges you only need to replace the color you run out of.

There are a few very small things to keep in mind with this printer:

1. Although it has a rather small form factor, it's very heavy for its size.
2. It's quite a bit louder than most laser printers. If you keep this in your office, place it as far away from a telephone as possible.
3. The USB port works perfectly and is lightning fast. If you run this as a workgroup printer on a network, though, be aware that there's a bug in the network printer driver. If the printer is on your network and the printer has gone into power-saver mode, about one print job in ten will fail to "wake up" the printer, and the print job will time out with an error. That can be frustrating, but Xerox is usually very good about correcting this sort of bug and it's a fairly new model printer.

Overall, a very good choice for the budget-conscious office.

Awesome printer and awesome price

Just bought one of these after my cheap Samsung printer died on me. The print quality on this would be competitive with printers at 2-3x the price. Also, you can refill the toner cartridges for very little money, which makes the price per page about as cheap as anything I've seen.

Rock-solid printer with fast and great-looking output

Buying this for a small office? Perfect. The speed of this printer (24ppm in black and white or color) will keep up with the workload. Niceties like SNMP monitoring keep your IT department happy.

Buying this for a home? Great. It's big and a bit loud, but you don't have to worry about the print heads clogging with ink because you haven't printed anything in the last 2 days. The image quality is good enough for framing, as long as you don't look too closely.

Overall an excellent printer. No drivers are needed for Mac OS X 10.7 or later -- the printer just installs itself over BonJour. This printer doesn't support AirPrint, but install the Printopia app (not included) on your Mac and it now works with your iPhone, iTouch, or iPad.

Solid, fast, dependable, sky-high price for toner

I've been buying laser printers for my home office since Apple first shipped theirs. Then I moved over to HP's. But now I wanted something that could do for duplex color as my old HP's did for Black and White. The Xerox 6360 reminds me of how HP _used to_ build printers - like a truck - very fast, solid, dependable and it just works. Almost impossible to screw up. Important when you're using a duplexer. (I've yet to have a single duplexer jam and that's its default setting.) Color in business documents just becomes second nature and seeing someones plain B&W documents makes you realize what they're missing.

Did I say it was fast? I used it to proof my 300 page book.

Full disclosure, after using the one in our house for two weeks I bought another one for our vacation place.

Only complaint is the one I have with all printers - when it's time for new color toner cartridges your heart will be your mouth. Replacing each of the three color cartridges are $322 _each_ (from Xerox) + another $194 for the black cartridge. So figure you're paying the price of the printer ~$1,100 every 12 to 18,000 pages. Gulp.

started out great went downhill quickly

This printer printed better than any I've owned for about the first half of the original black toner cartridge (8 days), then parts had to be replaced (transfer roller). Worked great for another 21 days (had used about half of a 2nd black toner cartridge (after market - non Xerox toner). Then, we were printing and cancelled a print job on the computer in the middle of the print job, the printer printed about 100 pages of gibberish and some pages with error messages then started printing the gibberish again, as it printed (about 100 more pages) (we were not watching the print job so we did not stop the gibberish print) the black faded out until it was just dark enough to read it (very light gray). We called and they sent out an imaging unit. Did not fix the problem at all. So they sent out a technician. He replaced all normally routine maintenance parts except the transfer unit, which he ordered another of even though the first one did not fix the problem, but it hadn't come in before he was here on his 3rd visit in one week. It is now printing worse than when we originally called about the problem. It was originally just printing the black color too lightly, but now it is ghost printing, printing some black color dark and some light, and the more pages you print the worse it gets....the tech is coming again as soon as the imagining unit arrives....but he is trying to blame the whole mess on the non Xerox toner which worked fine for about half the cartridge and which also worked better before he worked on the printer (and this is after he replaced our cartridge with a new Xerox one). He also had ordered what looked like a motherboard for the printer but didn't get to install it because it was broke in half during shipping due to poor packaging. Mean while we have no catalog printer for our business, I am having to buy another printer to use while this one is being worked on. I'm hoping it gets fixed and maybe it can be a back up printer of some sort.

The most money I ever paid for a printer, worked the shortest time of any printer I've ever owned.

Drivers are atrocious!

The printed output is fine. The drivers are horrible.

I hate background utilities that must standby and occupy resources in order for the equipment to function. I have never had an Epson operate this way.

If the print manager is removed from the system tray (not run at start-up), you are sunk.
The drivers and utilities must be uninstalled then manually removed from the XP registry.
If the preceding removals are not accomplished, Windows XP may hang during a reboot.
Also, the USB port to which the printer is attached will report a malfunction.

Initially, I thought it was the communications board. So, I disassembled the unit for a look.
Everything seemed well. However, as an experienced technician, I can declare the electronics assembly a fairly haphazard design. I insulated and grounded the comm. board properly.

All in all, typical Xerox junk made in China.

This printer is very good for the price. I have had no issues with the printer whatsoever. I would defintely recomend this printer. Prints good, not sure how much the tonor cartridge is but so far happy with my purchase.

Phaser 3200 MFP (network) with Mac OSX

We have owned this product now for about 6 months. It is used lightly in a small business environment connected to an Apple Extreme Base Station supporting both PCs and Macs. Setting the device via its web interface is modestly intuitive IF you have a background in network and pc basics. Several of the features though do not work correctly (Fax delay and User id for scan).

The machine works fairly well with pcs and the scan and fax features are available via the network. For the Mac, forget it. Though our sales rep insisted that it does work with OSX, it does not. The only feature available is print via the network. Scanning and fax must be done by connecting the Mac with a USB cable and sadly, with the latest update of OSX, even that no longer works.

More importantly, using the scanning feature via the small LED interface on the machine is very frustrating and time consuming. Scanning a document for email (after it has been setup, this will take you a while) works only if you don't want to send a copy to yourself as well, otherwise, it aborts. Recently we printed a short (4 page) document on a hot humid day and the machine jammed. Not a big deal, they all do sooner or later. The problem is that the feed mechanism is so poorly designed and virtually inaccessible by a user that we had to call Xerox service to come and repair it (a modes fee that would have been free had we taken the machine to the service center and waited) which required significant disassembly of the machine. 3 pages had wrapped around the feed roller and had to be cut out with a knife thus damaging the rubber roller (which they did not have in stock) in the process.

The reason we chose this printer is because Xerox was aggressively pricing the unit against the HP and Canon and Xerox's former reputation. Bad choice. This product is designed very poorly from its arcane software to its badly thought out drive mechanism. To give credit where credit is do, when it does work, it prints quickly and clearly.

This machine is in no way a competitor to the other in class machines from HP or Canon (the others we looked at) and can not be recommended for any reason, even if all you have is a pc network.

So far I am very pleased with the purchase. Speed, ease of setup, and the software you get with the copier! Waiting to see how many copies I get from the cartridge.
