4A Document Feeder That REALLY works!
By Wretched Excess
I've been through a number of printers but none have had document feeders that I could turn my back on and feel certain that all pages would be fed, and fed one at a time. This Brother's doc feeder has been 100% reliable so far.

I also like the low price ink cartridges ....the cheapest ink of all the printers I researched (and I researched them all!). The J435W is also quiet compared to other machines I've owned, and it feels pretty sturdy.

But I have to say the print quality is only so-so. I wouldn't want to try to print anything on it that I wanted to look highly professional, for instance, a brochure. But I didn't buy it to try to compete with Fed-Ex Office. It does print out my color letterhead with above average results.

And one more thing. Since the LCD screen goes dark to save power after just a few minutes, there's often no way to know the machine is "on" or "off" by just glancing at it.

Taking everything into consideration, I'd buy it again. In a heart-beat.

5Great Printer
By Dawn H.
I needed to replace a failing HP printer. I was tired of buying a new printer every year (yes, my HP printers would die after a year) so I searched out a different brand.
This printer has the 4 functions I require in a printer; print, scan, copy, and fax.

For those purposes, this printer works great.

I easily connected it to my pc and when I recently bought a mac, it easily found the printer as well.

It seems to go easy on the ink. I'm not replacing ink any more than I did before.

Works for me!
BTW, I've been using it for about 6 months, daily. I've replaced the black ink 1x and the yellow 1x.

5Brother First Class Quality /Price of Feature Set?
By Richard S. Pasma
The comments posted on this thread on January 24th are agreed with wholeheartedly. About four years ago I purchased a Brother 2040 laser printer for about $50 and it has performed flawlessly. So far it has printed out about 15000 pages without one paper jam. This is not a lot for a business but a quite a bit for home use. Three cases of paper and still going.

Against Brother's recommendations I refilled the toner cartridges, used replacement generic toner cartridges and one generic drum. More than likely I have been lucky, but given the cost difference versus the cost of the printer, should it get destroyed, it seemed worth the gamble. The cost per page for the consumables with this printer has been less than a penny a page. Still I know people with kids that use ink jet printers that cost about three cents per page with a printer that is not likely to last more than 10000 pages, crazy. Running out of ink and having to change cartridges every 500 (it is usually less) pages is a pain as well.

One thing about these reviews is the opinions expressed often do not take into account the varying needs/usage people might have regarding a given item. For my use this printer should work out well since most of the printing will be done with the laser. Copies, occasional color prints, scanning and the rare need for a fax are the planned usage for this MFC and so far in this regard it has been working well.

This printer came with printed manuals with first class instructions. Each topic starts with an overview giving the various options and then points to the section you need to go to follow with step by step instructions, very cookbook. Illustrations and an easy to read format relating to the printer controls and menus was well done. Although this might sound simple it is not common to find. Some clowns thinking putting manuals on disc is a high tech way of saving money. Customer service provided with paper manuals is cheap given the goodwill it produces, hello?

Setting up the wireless on the printer given the one button setup option provided by both my router and this printer were available, was very easy. If you have a fussy router, no instructions or hardware is going to make your job easier.

The buttons and the menus provided on the LCD screen to access the MFC functions are easy to follow.

In the last 10 years I needed to Fax something once from home, and I went to Office Depot to do it with minimal trouble and expense. If the fax functions of this MFC are going to be used by me, they will be manually configured for a one time use. The documentation and setup seem to be clear enough for easy setup and use should that be desired.

The document feeder works well. For making copies there is not much if any warm up required. From a cold start on fast quality, three copies feed through the feeder took about 20 seconds to produce.

Photos printed with this printer have been about 85 percent as good as lab photos. Since generic (good quality) photo paper was used, better results might be possible. On 4 by 6 photos you get a border on all sides of about 1/8th of an inch. Unless you are going to be printing a huge volume of photos the general rule is lab photos are cheaper and better than any printer you are going to buy.

The original ink cartridges provided with this printer, living up to the starter cartridge "This is how we make money philosophy", did not last very long. The replacement cartridges taken from a set of 20 generic cartridges purchased for $22 on Amazon have been working well so far, but it is too early to know if this is going to work out.

The Amazon cost of this MFC at the time of this review was the same as other Brother MFCs having duplex printing, memory card slots and a bigger LCD screen with touch screen menu options including links to the social web pages. With the way Amazon rips though inventory you would expect rapid price adjustments to market conditions. For some reason this has not happened with this item to date. As such it is highly recommended you shop around a bit unless you see a more rational price to feature relationship.

All the Best,
Rich

5Great all around laser printer
By B. Hancock
So far this laser has been great. i was looking for a laser that printed on both sides and network ready. The samsung filled the bill at a very attractive price (can be has for $160 with instant rebate). It was a breeze to setup on Mac OS 10.5 as a network printer. Bonjour found it and just use the Samsung driver. Also since it has native postscript support you can use the Generic Postscript Driver with it as well. Works fine under 10.5 that way as well. Printing speed is awesome, and printing on both sides is great. the smaller form factor is great too.

4Good printer for medium level use with 2nd paper tray
By Tad B. Coles
I've been using the printer for over 6 months. I print 1,000 - 2,000 pages every month. The Samsung ML-2851ND Network-Ready Monochrome Laser Printer works very well for my purposes.

I am running MAC OS 10.5.6 on a computer that is hooked to the printer via USB cable and MAC OS 10.4 on a computer that is hooked to the printer via network. Setup was intuitive. I have not experienced the print smear issues that other reviewers mentioned.

The availability of a 250 Sheet Second Paper Tray (ML-S2850A) was influential in my decision to pick this printer. Thus the printer cost quite a bit more, but it was worth it for me so I didn't have to keep switching paper types in the tray. As a writer I print out a lot of drafts to hand edit. I recycle paper that already has print on one side. I keep one tray with new paper for printing on one side or two sides using the automatic duplex feature and the second tray full of paper to reuse, printing on only one side. I don't print a lot of envelopes, but when I do I just feed them one at a time by hand in the manual feeder, which does not accept more than one page.

Paper jams occur occasionally, more often from the tray with the recycle paper, usually due to paper folding or other defect. On-screen instructions have been very helpful, providing detailed instructions on clearing the jam.

Print cartridge replacement is intuitive. The printer ships with the ML-D2850A Black Toner Cartridge, which prints about 2,000 copies. I've replaced it with the Samsung ML-D2850B Black Toner Cartridge , which prints about 5,000 copies. I don't print a lot of images, mostly just text. I've not kept close records on how many copies I've actually printed, but I use the toner save mode for the majority of the printing and my impression was that I was getting a good return on the investment with the larger cartridge, until I ran into a few faulty ones. The company did NOT satisfy me with their response. I eventually just gave up trying to get them to refund my money.

I see that a cheaper high-yield print cartridge REFILL option is available <1 Black Samsung ML-2850 High Yield Toner Refill Kit, also for ML-2851 ML-D2850B ML-D2850A ML-D2850B INCLUDES RESET CHIP>. From the reviews it looks like the instructions are poor, but once you get the refill system figured out it works pretty well. I'm going to try the refill option next time due to expense and the fact that the company does a crummy job regarding satisfaction guarantee if the product is faulty.

2Could have been great
By Bari E. Krisinger
The ML2851ND is capable of some nice clean copies, good grayscale and quiet, fast operation. It is easy to set up, especially with Macintosh. It's footprint is fairly small for use in tight spaces. The only problem is that right out of the box about 95% of my copies printed with a smeary toner streak about a half an inch wide all the way down the left margin. This prints with varying densities most of the time but seems the darkest when the printer is first used. After about 10 to 15 copies it starts to fade, but the defect returns as the printer cools. I don't know if this is universal with this model, but it reflects very poor quality control on Samsung's part. Samsung's customer service was responsive but offered no workaround. I assume they are aware of the problem since they directed me to a repair center immediately. So, I've owned it for less than a week, and either must pack it all back up, insure it and ship it back to the online seller (not Amazon), or leave it with a repair shop. It's a no win situation.

2Good print quality but very high toner use...
By Boulder1259
I'm pleased with the print quality and speed but am finding the printer to be very, very expensive to operate. Even with Samsung's Toner Saver feature turned on, we (a small business) are only getting approximately 5,500 mostly text pages from a 10,000 page cartridge. At first, I thought that we'd been shipped the 4,000 page cartridge by mistake. However, I called Samsung, and they said that such low yields are not uncommon for this printer.

The low yield wouldn't be such a problem if it weren't for the fact that Samsung's cartridges are quite expensive. I wish I could give a better report, but our initial impression is that the ML-3471ND is not a cost-effective printer for a small office environment.

If my operating experience changes, I'll update this review.

5High Quality, Feature Rich & Reliable B&W Laser Printer
By Donald C. Pachner
I have used Samsung B&W laser printers in my office from the time I started my business 6 years ago. They are workhorses and rarely jam. Samsung packs a reliable, feature-rich package including network capability, automatic duplexing and postscript printing. When a 6 year old printer that I had bought used finally broke down, I replaced it with the ML-3471IND as a personal printer in my office. It's much faster than the original, and I think the print is clearer at the same resolution...

Samsung has improved on an excellent product. Only negative is it comes with a 300 sheet tray, rather than a 500 sheet tray, and can't handle two trays with different types of paper. This is not a problem for me, for I can easily load up to 10-15 sheets or more of letterhead or envelopes, etc. in the multi-function tray. Occasionally crinkles envelopes, but otherwise flawless operation.

The other reason I purchased it was price/value...Samsung seems to make exceptional printers for the money. For some odd reason they are not reviewed in all the major mags, nor are they promoted by all the usual outlets, so they seem to be a well-kept secret. These are durable and high quality that matches or exceeds any printer in its price range.

2Great if print quality is a secondary concern
By Jordan Hurder
This printer is fast, easy to use, and it has a nice feature set. Toner use is on par with other laser printers I've used - no matter what brand, you're not going to get the yield advertised on the cartridge. Using this printer on toner save mode around 40% of the time, I get around 3000 sheets from a 10,000 sheet cartridge.

Print quality was great at first but deteriorated quickly. The printer likes to print stripes down the center and edges of the page at random times; auto-cleaning the drum and fuser unit do not help. Other times, there is banding down the sides due to inconsistent ink coverage. Add to that Samsung's absolutely horrendous customer service (good luck getting your printer serviced under warranty), and it doesn't make for a fun ownership experience.

I bought this printer to replace a consumer-level Lexmark with a blown fuser unit. I was attracted to its seemingly good toner usage and high monthly duty cycle. Ignore both - it has some nice features and may be fine for your home or office if print quality are not very important to you, but it does nothing to elevate it above all the other printers on the market in this pricepoint, plus the manufacturer barely supports it, and there are serious print quality issues.

5E260dn for home use
By Sanford Imhoff
Just a comment on the paper jam light when using manual feed. If you press the red 'X' button when the jam light appears it clears the light and you can then print the next whatever. Lexmark's commercial grade lasers function the same way in that each page/envelope has to be cleared when using manual feed. It isn't a defect..its just the way the manual feed works.

I was an unfortunate owner of the infamous HP P2015dn and went through two formatter boards before giving up on it and moving on to the E260dn.

I haven't had the printer long enough to comment on its longevity but I can say this is a superior printer to the HP (all HP problems aside). Faster to first print, faster printing sheet for sheet, much better duplexing and better software in general. Print quality is about the same. Both are quiet although the Lexmark is quicker to shut down its processing. The HP did have a better envelope/manual feed.

Now, for an embarrassing acknowledgment but also a statement on Lexmark service. It had been so long since I performed a firmware upgrade I forgot the printer must be connected through a USB cable (not network) in order to flash. So, trying to update through a network connection thoroughly messed things up. I contacted Lexmark customer service and was very impressed. Connected with tech support in about a minute. After trying different processes to see if the firmware could be salvaged they stated the printer would need to be exchanged for a new one. They willingly shipped the new printer to my place of work so I could sign for it and it arrived the following AM as promised. Lexmark's warranty on this printer is one year, next-day exchange.

Thus far, this is a printer I would highly recommend for home or small business use based on my experience. Understand the 'paper jam' light is a function of manual feed and not a defect per se.

3Mostly good but...
By L. Graf
This printer is easy to set up and produces good quality print. I haven't had the other reviewers' problems with the manual feed of envelopes, and the Lexmark handles automatic paper feed with ease. One thing I don't like about it is that the on-off switch is in back rather than on the side. Given my computer set-up, this means an awkward stretch for me every time I turn the printer on or off.

The toner cartridge is easy to insert and remove, and the print it produces is sharp and dark and doesn't smudge. My main beef with the Lexmark lies with its voracious appetite for toner. At the default settings the cartridge gets used up in less than the advertised maximum 3500 pages -- not good if you regularly print a lot, often hundreds of pages a day, as I do.

However, you can ameliorate this problem by adjusting the settings. In Printer Preferences click on Print Quality, there click on Custom, and then slide the indicator arrow from 10 to at least 5, which in my experience provides a good sharp dark print. The quality will be acceptable for drafts even at 3 and the cartridge life will be greatly extended.

Overall it's a definite improvement over my ancient HP 2200 laser, and overall I think it was a good purchase. But keep these drawbacks in mind as you consider whether it will work for you.

Update, August 2011: Almost two years later and the printer is still going strong, still churning out lots of pages reliably for me. The only beef I have with it is that the warning light for changing the photoconductor kit blinks All. The. Time. even when I've just inserted a new, from the manufacturer kit.

4A great workhorse, but not perfect
By Robert Paxton
The good parts:
- Absolutely silent at idle, reasonably quiet in operation.
- FAST! Its warm-up time is very quick, documents come across the network very quickly, and the print speed is wonderful.
- Great main tray paper handling...no jams, and the duplexer works perfectly.
- Easy to set up. The wizard on the setup disc worked very well, and it's nice to be able to point your browser at the printer to get a complete status readout without wasting a page printing it out.

The bad part:
- The manual feed is worthless, as other reviewers have said. I'm currently hand-writing addresses on envelopes, which does not make me happy. The rollers grip and pull an envelope into the machine just fine, but then the paper jam light comes on and it's all over. My hope is a firmware update fixes it...someday...

* 9/18/09 UPDATE *
Still works perfectly as mentioned above, except for the manual feed - - which is still worthless. I'm still addressing envelopes by hand.

* 6/4/12 UPDATE *
The latest firmware fixes the manual feed problem. I wish it hadn't taken 3 years, but...it's finally fixed.
