4The (almost) perfect Multi-function printer!
By Joxxy
This was my third Brother MFC printer. I was trying to replace my current MFC9600 that has been been excellent for more than 5 years. I wanted the duplex functionality, the better print quality, as well as the some of the additional features.

And you better believe it, this machine is IT! Faster faxing, faster and better quality scanning, faster copying and printing, better quality prints and copies, and many more very beneficial features that I really liked. being technically savvy, it was a breeze setting it up as a wireless printer without using the Brother wizard in the CD. So, after a quick setup, I was able to complete all my tasks wirelessly...

I was very pleased with my purchase. Everything was actually perfect until I tried printing on an envelope. The first time I printed on an envelope, the result was a completely wrinkled envelope. Then I tried again, and same result. I thought that I could survive with a wrinkled envelope anyway. So, a week later, I tried again. This time, I kept getting the message "Check Paper Size". After a few calls to customer service, the problem was still not resolved. So, I decided to return it to the store.

Printing on an envelope is a show stopper for me! However, I will check back again after a few months. Hopefully Brother will fix this issue so I can buy this printer again.

Yes! I have to admit it! Except for the envelope issue, this is the best printer on the market.

3No warnings on the box - but good enough!
By Mark Shapiro
Oh how I wanted this, I like brother printers - and a wireless one that supports OS9 OSX, and Windows too, USB, wireless, or ethernet - wowee! Then I opened the box, does not do wireless with OS9. Oh well, then I plugged it in and every UPS in my office chimed and the lights flickered when I turn it on. Yep, even plugged straight into the wall, this room heater uses 9.1 Amps, and I bet 11 when it first powers up. So, this just won't work in an average home office - we have 15 amp lines - a few computers, a TV, a radio, a light, and that can add up to 7 amps - add this fax machine and pop a breaker. I never got a chance to test it, but it sure sounds good. If you have a 20-amp circuit, or can dedicate a 15-amp circuit to it, I'm sure it's a great machine.

Well, I tried it again, put it downstairs in a room with no other computers and
tried the wireless option. Ok, I'm keeping it! On my main wireless laptop, it
works great, my other wireless laptop - in the same room as the monster
Brother MFC - it works for one time, then stopped working. So I used a
USB cable on that one. My 3 other OSX machines in other rooms work great
printing to it wirelessly, so, most of my computers can print, scan, and fax,
wirelessly to this beast. So, I'm going to keep it, as it sucks less than an
amp when it sleeps, and it copies and faxes and scans - wireless access,
really well. I think it was the hassle of returning it that made me try again.
And the laptop that won't print wirelessly to it, well, PCs are PCs, some
don't work for some reason, it's an older laptop, my workhorse one works
fine.

4Fantastic for the price
By vlnmkr
I bought this printer from Costco and got the wireless feature for the same price as the non-wireless version with a rebate. It's works extremely well. It's very fast and the quality is excellent. I was unsure whether I needed the duplexing feature but since I have it, I use it all the time and am very pleased that I opted for this model. No, this machine cannot print on envelopes. Don't even try it. I don't need this feature so I can get over it. I print on labels instead. The Brother software is easy to use and works well. I love being able to scan into a pdf document or email directly from a scan. The auto document feeder works very well. I have no complaints other than the envelope problem. I defintely recommend this machine. It does everything I need, very well and for a very reasonable price.

2Disappointing printer
By IT Atty
From the specs, this Brother multi-function printer has a lot going for it. In the home or workplace, it falls far short.

I use this printer in a busy home office. After two months of heavy use, here are my thoughts and obervations on it:

Printer: The specs say up to 30 ppm (pages per minute) b&w, 25ppm color. After it warms up, I'd say it never went above 10 ppm even in b&w. Even on its highest quality, it disappoints. Text is clearly legible, but not something I'd feel good about showing a client. Color is woefully slow, and lacks both richness and clarity.

Scanner: From a mechanical perspective, both the ADF and the flatbed actually work quite nicely. However, the old version of Paperport that it includes is slow, and creates HUGE files. OCR quality isn't worth using. I purchased ReadIRIS separately, and have been delighted with its speed and accuracy on this MFC.

Fax: Works well. Could use more menu detail.

Summary: If your most important need is a printer, look elsewhere. If you need a backup printer, but a decent scanner, this is pretty good, once you get better software.

5Brother MFC-5860cn Color Photo Inkjet All-in-One Flatbed with Networking with 2nd paper tray
By V. Weidler
In my businesses I print invoices and shipping labels concurrently and needed an affordable network printer with 2 paper trays so I did not have to change paper all the time. While searching for a network printer with dual paper trays I saw that owners of the Brother MFC_5860cn gave the printer very high ratings on cost, reliability, ease of use and actual English speaking live support. The only rating that was lower than the competition was print quality compared to the HP that cost $300 dollars more. I bought the printer and use it heavily for a busy home based business. The Brother MFC-5860cn has handled the job superbly. It is affordable to buy ink and I can now print invoices, sales letters, and labels from any of the workstations in the network. The fax has performed flawlessly on our VOIP phone system, and the excellent scanner and Color/B&W copier with 35 sheet feeder is a bonus that would be hard to do without once you've used it. I only use the OCR for mailing list/labels and it has worked fine. I only print to my HP for photos and presentation quality materials since it cost twice as much for ink, and only has one tray, and the HP software is still very buggy after numerous calls to HP support always starting with "mohwor prease" and ending with no resolution to the 25 copies of HPBIOD running in task manager after I printing with this printer. I have found the Brother MFC 5860cn to be a great solution for my business.

Update 01-2013
The Brother MFC-5860cn has handled the job superbly and affordable for 8 years now. I have printed 1000's of invoices and shipping labels. I hope it keeps going I'm spoiled now.

5fairly satisfied - not so much anymore
By zolo
I've been looking for a new printer for a while, and finally settled on this one. Fairly satistfied with the result. The printer is solidly built, print quality is very good to excellent, networking was extremely easy, fax and copy work well, and the 250 sheet second paper tray is great. Also, the Mac support is superior -which after many years of dealing with sub-par and bloated HP OS X drivers is a welcome change. Criticisms: a little slow; there is no built-in color LCD for previewing pictures when printing directly from a memory card (you have to print an index sheet and then manually key-in the number of the pic you want to print); and photo quality is okay but not great. (visible banding and colors look dull). Overall though, great printer.

UPDATE 3/3/08: well, after close to a year of reasonable performance, my first serious paper jam damaged the print head alignment, and I discovered (much to my dismay) that this machine is essentially not user-serviceable. Print head problems, while covered by the 1 year warranty, necessitate taking the machine in person to a local service center. This is a BIG letdown and a real pain in the a** to boot. My other comment would be that I'm now pretty frustrated by the firmware/UI, it is poorly thought out and more often than I'd like ends up in a hung state where you can't turn the machine off or even reset it because you're stuck in some error message which is only shown on the machine itself. Also, as others commented, the second tray is great, but driver support for it is limited.

In summary, I think Brother makes better fax machines than printers. Next time (which may be soon) I'm going back to HP or Canon.

4Nice multifunction that could use some improvements
By Scott H.
I bought the 8860DN a couple weeks ago to replace my aging HP 3330. While I'm quite happy with much of the 8860DN, there are a few things that could use improvement. Some of these can be addressed in software, others I fear are hardware issues.

BTW, I'm on my second machine because I thought some of the issues with the first warranted a replacement. Now I know its a "common" issue.

1) The print engine creaks and makes popping sounds as the fuser heats and cools. Even the demo machine in Office Depot does the same thing. The creaking is really annoying if you sit near the machine. A Brother senior tech rep tells me this issue is common to many Brother lasers. Well, gimme a break because HP and others don't creak! **UPDATE** Brother Corporate office tells me the popping sounds are considered "normal" by the engineers and at this time they have no plans to fix. Pathetic if you ask me. I think most users will agree!!!

2) The scanner ADF head will sometimes make odd sounds when its scanning the last page of a multi-page scan. It sounds as if the motor or gears need lubrication.

3) I've had the COPY function lockup on me a couple times (other fucntions continue to work) and the only way to correct is to power cycle. Cause is unknown but the clowns at Brother support tell me to keep power cycling the resolve the problem. IDIOTS!

4) The IFAX feature is not very well explained and is somewhat odd in the way it works (or tries to work). I've yet to really figure it out. As an alternative I use the FAX FORWARD TO EMAIL function which works well.

5) A PC software bug: When scanning multiple pages its impossible to multitask since the scanner interface takes the focus away from whatever you are doing everytime it begins scanning a new page. Brother apparently knows about this issue and will correct in the next software version.

Other than the above isues, I'm fairly satisfied in the short time I've been using this MFC. If I may comment in response to one of the previous reviews, the beep sound is adjustable and I believe if the user took the time to read the manual, he'd be quite happy with the level of customization available on this machine (I rarely hear of people complaining about too many features). Oh, and yes as stoneaged as it sounds, some people still do occasionally receive faxes.

As far as I'm concerned, the print speed is excellent. Even complex pages print quickly with nearly no delay between pages. A huge improvment over my old HP. Also, I find the scan speed on non complex scans to be excellent. Complex and high res scans are somewhat slower, but they are with many scanners (and certainly about every multifucntion I've run across). Print duplexing is another very nice touch and I'm surprised it works as well as it does. The 8860DN gets the job done and it does them well overall.

Things about the 8860DN I prefer over the new HP 3390 I compared it to.

1) 8860 has a legal size scan plate
2) 8860 will fax forward to email
3) 8860 is $150 less with approx. the same cost per page in consumables.
4) 8860 does duplex scan, copy

5Excellent - very happy
By Technologist
After reading reviews here I hesitated but happened to see the same machine (but without duplex capability) at a work site and that clinched it for me.

This machine is FAST. Setup is easy (I used the network connection) and the software is vastly improved over the last Brother laser I had (an HL-1270N).

The ticking noises other reviews mention is very slight and lasts just a few seconds while it heats up. Previous lasers I've had would typically whir loudly during this warm-up time - not this one. I sit next to the printer and it's really nothing. I think people have noticed it because it occurs in silence without other whiring sounds. The noise of the paper pick up (which is typical of any laser printer) is louder than the ticking (heating) sounds and the ticking stops before the first page comes out (so it lasts mere seconds). 5 seconds ticking, 5 seconds whiring and printing, page comes out. Followed by maybe 20-30 very small ticks over the next few minutes as it cools down. In comparison, my QMS color laser whirs loudly for about 15 minutes after printing a page.

What I didn't appreciate before ordering is that even the scanner has duplexing capability - fantastic! Double sided faxes and scans are simple.

Scanning works well both from the printer and when controlled from the PC. From the printer it shows the list of the available networked PC names to scan to - very nice. Pick your machine, press start, job done.

The only slight quirk I've noticed so far is that when sending double sided faxes the reverse sides are transmitted upside down. Maybe there's a setting for this somewhere. I haven't needed to read the manual AT ALL so far.

I haven't seen any sign of flickering room lights or other concerns from the power draw during heat-up. Installation couldn't have been simpler. Machine is not too heavy and is easily picked up and moved by one person.

OCR software works very well - again an improvement on the past.

Verdict (after owning a few days): Don't hesistate to buy - so far very very happy. Vast improvement over previous MFC's and lasers I've owned.

5Great Multi-Function Machine
By Eric Wade
Having had bad experiences with multi-function machines in the past, I over-researched this purchase. To begin with, this machine's specs are top notch for the money. You simply cannot get this much bang for your buck from any other company. Taking the machine out of the box and setting it up was remarkably easy. I actually thought I was forgeting something. The software installed cleanly and is user-friendly. I should mention, however, that I have not gone through the fax machine setup (not using for that purpose at the present time). Also, the machine does not come with a USB cable, which is, unfortunately, fairly standard with printers today.

Prints and copies at 30 ppm in 600 dpi. I have tested this and it appears fairly close to true (maybe a little slower, like 28 ppm). It produces nice, crisp clear letters in both print and copy modes. The 50 page ADF is made from a reasonably sturdy plastic. At least it doesn't feel like it is going to come loose or break off, and I have not had any paper jams (as of yet) in the ADF or standard, 250 count paper tray.

The scan function has worked well. Two very nice features this model provides are scan to pdf file and scan to OCR. The scan to pdf file is a rare option in a desktop multi-function machine at this price. It works well, although I am still playing around with the settings in an effort to find the best scan quality at a decent file size. I think the pdf file sizes I have been getting are too large (around 700KB - 1MB for a 1 to 2 page pdf). Surely this can be corrected by changing some settings. The scan to OCR also works remarkably well. I can remember 5 years ago attempting to use scan to OCR on another machine and being very disappointed. Things have improved greatly.

The cost of the toner cartridges on this model are reasonable. A high yield 7000 page cartridge for around $80 - $90 works out to a cost per page of 1.14 - 1.28 cents per page of toner, which is quite good.

Can't comment on the fax functions b/c I am not using it for that purpose.

Overall, a very nice machine with impressive features at this price. Hopefully it holds up.
