5hidden reset features to save money on toners!!!
By Sang Joon Lee
This printer will tell you when you are out of toners and need new ones. And when you are out with just one of the color toner, this printer will not allow you to print anything until you replace it with the new toner.

So here is how to override these problem, and you decide when the toner needs to be changed... and not the printer.

1. Slide out the toner trays and put a piece of black electrical tape over the sensors on each color toner. This will make the print think that it has full toner.

2. If you already see "Replace Toner" messages, just RESET it by opening the front COVER and pressing CANCEL and REPRINT together. Scroll up and down to reset desired toner.

3. If you think you have more life and juice left on its drum and laser parts, just reset it and forget it! Open the COVER, and hold down GO and hit UP (+) button. Scroll through the menu to select and reset!!!!

After the "replace toner" message, I reset the counter, and I have printed over 2000 more pages on a same cartridge. But be aware! You will start to see some "sprinkles of toners" on your pages as they are way over used.

5Best Buy for the Money
By M. Reams
I researched and found that cartridges for this machine are a lot cheaper than those for HP's and the toner that comes with the printer has a page yield of 1500 color and 2500 b&w. The Hp's came with toner that had only 750 page yield then you had to pay approx $140 for the toner cartridges for replacement when with this one you can purchase toner cartridges for right around $70 which is half the price with more page yield. So far I have printed 450 pages on the starter cartridges and the toner amount has not lowered and the print quality is excellent!

4Brother envelope issues; this helped!
By Double Up
I purchased the Brother HL-4040CDN in June 09, after reading all the reviews I could find. Some people mentioned a problem printing envelopes but I thought that was just a random problem;but soon found that every envelope I printed was creased and wrinkled. I tried every Printer Properties option - envelope type, paper type, thicker paper, etc. I researched all the Brother website troubleshooting help for printer, paper feeding and envelope issues, and tried it all. Nothing worked. Then, I went to Solution Center, FAQs: "envelopes wrinkle and crease" I found this one thing that helped tremendously. Very insignificantly listed as the last option: Open the back door of the printer and move the Envelope levers down, these are two grey levers next to the green levers on the fuser unit. Make sure to leave the grey levers down for envelope printing only. When done printing envelopes return the grey lever to the original position or UP position for use with regular paper.

It is very inconvenient to open the back door and move the grey levers every time I need to print an envelope, so I have found that leaving the grey levers down has not caused a problem printing on paper.

Hope this helps someone. It sure helped me, and would have saved me lots of time and envelopes.

4Great features, great function, one caveat...
By R. Phillips
This is a large printer with lots of features that work well. I set this up on the wireless function to operate with my Mac. It only took one setup and I've experienced no problems with the range, which I did experience on my HP initially. Sending documents to print is a fast and easy task. It has an easy to use and good looking large touchscreen to take you through each menu. This is great and time saving when compared with other printers. Having the ability to print ledger photos without going to a printer store is fantastic and I used it to make several posters for our portfolio.

Now to the caveat, big or small depending on your needs. The print quality is not nearly as good as the HP. It's comparable to other brands, very similar to what Lexmark puts out, but could not compare in color quality to my HP. Yesterday, I needed to print out a color chart for our business products and I did a couple on the normal settings on my HP. Then my ink got low so I switched over to the Brother to make a couple on there. I decided to put it on the best quality settings because I wanted the colors to be very vibrant. It takes a good bit of time to print on the high quality setting so I was expecting a lot and was very disappointed when it was finished. The colors looked washed out or a bit faded when held side by side to what I had just printed on the HP and took 3 times as long to print. I took it without saying which was which and showed it to my husband who pointed to the HP document and said that it was so much better and that there was no comparison. As far as my color chart, the HP was very usable and the Brother not at all. To be fair, the Brother has settings for its color printer that you can manually enter. I'm just not adept enough to do that, to know which settings to set the colors on. But as far as default printing, you won't get top quality photo printing, you will get adequate printing. So, the bottom line is if you need high quality color printing, then this might not be the right printer for you. But if you are an occasional photo printer or primarily use it for office or business documents where vibrant color quality is not required, then this is a great, easy to use multi-function printer and you should give it a try.

4Good for a specialized purpose
By Gary Washer
After using this printer's predecessor (MFC-6490CW) for over a year, I can offer the following:

My requirements are very specific. I need ledger-size (11x17) scanning and printing...period. Just try to find an AIO at this price that will do that (unless you want to pay $600+?) Most of my documents are B&W, some with a small amount of color highlighting, and this printer works flawlessly for that purpose.

For color photos, make sure you use photo paper or the color is so washed out even at the custom maxed-out settings that I don't bother printing photos on plain paper.

The automatic document feeder, ADF, is somewhat flakey and skews the paper a bit too much for my finiky demands so I just limit myself to using the glass-top surface for most scanning.

I love the scan-to-file feature that doesn't require input from the PC and allows several file formats as the default, including PDF. If you are not picky about the document skewing of the ADF, this printer will scan a stack of originals and place the entire set into a single multi-page PDF file if you desire.

This printer uses replaceable ink "tanks" instead of ink/head cartridges and this makes it much easier to manage and refill if you choose. The printer asks if you have installed a new tank and then takes your word for it, unlike the HP I used previously that insisted on reporting an out-of-ink condition even after refilling. Since this printer's tanks have no electronics inside, there is no serial number to read and no way for the software to know if you have inserted an old cartridge.

I noticed over the last year that the user manual is somewhat incomplete and confusing/contradictory. Some features that were described in the manual did not function and some functions referenced on their web site were not properly described in the manual.

3Very good if you need ledger printing. Not so good if you don't.
By Kevin Nicholls
After owning and reviewing both the excellent Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer and the almost as-good Canon PIXMA MX860 Wireless All-In-One Photo Printer, Brother has to make an airtight case against Canon when they're looking to get twice as much money out of your wallet.

Unless printing on 11 x 17" (ledger) paper is a make-or-break need, Brother doesn't make a very good case against the less expensive Canon offerings.

Of course, this is Brother's flagship inkjet AIO offering, so they've thrown in a gimmicky touchscreen. Sure, it's kind of cool, but it doesn't really help accomplish much beyond jacking up the price. Is it missing from other AIO printers? Sure. Does it add any value? No.

Setting the printer up on MacOS X was quite painless, making for an unexpected treat. Setting the printer up in Windows was also simple, as expected. Wireless printing worked well all around, with very good range. And Brother's dual-tray paper handling is something that's sorely missing from all of Canon's offerings.

So, why all the Canon talk? Because comparatively speaking, the Brother MFC-6890cdw takes longer to print both text and photos (single sided and duplex), the photo quality isn't as good, the scanning speed is not as good, the document feeder acts screwy when you're not using 8.5 x 11" paper, and yet... it costs nearly twice as much.

A natural retort could be "But Brother is targeting small business users", which is normally true, but that simply doesn't wash when you take consumables in to consideration. Comparing the black ink between Canon and Brother (PGI-220BK vs. LC61BKS), you get rated yields of 350 pages vs. 450 pages. But when you dig a little deeper and compare the cost per page based on the cartridge cost, you end up with 4.6 cents per page on the Canon side and 5.5 cents per page on the Brother side (based on the retail price of both cartridges at a national office supply store). So while it's true that you're going through more cartridges on the Canon side, you're also paying less for them upfront and per page.

So at the end of the day, why would you buy this printer? To be honest, I don't really know. If you're heavy in to ledger sized documents, and need the occasional presentation printed, you don't have many alternatives. But if you don't need to print larger than 8.5 x 11" on a daily basis, get yourself the Canon Pixma MX860, enjoy the better quality and the hundreds of dollars you'll save.

4Greatest Value in Color Laser
By Samuel M. Stone
This is the 4th color laser I've owned. The first two were Konica-Minolta. They were among the first affordable ones in the market (still expensive) and one of them, Magicolor 2300dl, does a decent job considering the technology of its time. The second and smaller one, Magicolor 2400, died in a couple of year and was slow. The third one is HP 2025, which is much smaller (of course still much bigger than color inkject printers.) and it prints duplex. But it takes an hour to print a full page double-sided color brochure. Even though the color output is vibrant, the speed is miserable. So if I want 10 copies of full color image, I have to let it print over night. I will use these printers until their drum lives end, and will sell or give away instead of spending more money on them.

One main feature I want out of a color laser is duplex printing. I decided to try Brother HL-4150CDN because it was sold for $250 on Amazon.com (surprised to see the price went up to $370 after I bought). It has duplex printing and claimed to be fast. Well, it is fast, the fastest of all color printers I have every owned. Even though it is loud when it prints, you hear only a few seconds of noise and then it's completely quiet.

One star was removed because of the color. It is dry, unlike the shiny output from the HP. I don't really mind the dry color. The real problem is the colors being too dark. I tried some adjustment on the configuration and it has improved but still darker than the original, or HP output. That also means I am consuming more toner. I've got it for a week, and I don't think I have printed so much, but the yellow toner is show half left.

I am trying to figure out color calibration, which I've never needed to do with my previous printers. I hope it helps. There is a toner saving mode, I can't find how to set it yet, but I hope that helps. Maybe at the toner saving mode it will give me a lighter but correct colors.

--Update---
The yellow color showing half full was not correct. It shows that way when you look at the printer admin page from the browser, but the digital window on the printer shows full. I did a calibration, but it appears to be perfectly calibrated from the factory. I set the printer to "Toner Saving" mode and set the frequency to "Low" (I don't know what this means). Then the color has lightened but still a little darker than the HP out put.

4rock solid
By TechAndWood
I bought this printer 1 week ago. As per one of the other reviewers, this unit has some heft to it. It comes with full cartridges, not starter cartridges. The color and sharpness are excellent. I've been using a monochrome HP 1020 laserjet for the last few years. there's a definite improvement in the sharpness of the text. When the machine comes out of its sleep mode, it is louder than I anticipated, and was even a bit shocked at first. Also, it takes about 15 sec to print its first page. I got this for about $280 through Staples and am pleased with the price paid and the performance of this unit. I expect many years of use, which is strictly in the home setting. Setup was simple. This is networked to my home network though an ethernet cable. I have 1 computer running Window 7 and 2 others running Win XP home. all of them found the printer on the network without any glitches. It was much easier to set up than trying to "share" a non-networked printer. I gave it 4 stars because of the noise level. In fairness, I have nothing to compare it to in its class. For the money paid, I think this is a better built unit than the HP 2025, which also costs more, and the cartridges for the HP cost twice as much as the Brother, though there is no drum to replace in the HP since the drum function is built into each cartridge, hence its price. A new drum for this brother runs about $150 but i don't expect that it'll need replacing for few years or so. I can live with that! Hope this helps

5so far, so good!
By vaaesthete
This is a new printer from Brother and I was a little nervous because there were no reviews for it. Bought this printer locally for $299 plus a $50 trade-in, bringing my price to a very reasonable $250 plus tax. First, it is a sizable printer, so you need some room for it. It is also fairly heavy, which hopefully implies a more substantial product. None of the parts, such as the paper tray or manual feed extension, feel flimsy at all. Setup instructions were trivial and I was printing in under 30 minutes, including assigning an IP address.

I used the CD to install the print drivers on two windows 7 machines and they installed successfully with no issues. The printer comes with four starter cartridges and the print quality is very sharp, IMO.

I will provide additional updates as I use this printer more, but after 7 days and 100 pages of printing, I am extremely pleased with this printer!

Update - 1/19/2011. Machine continues to operate well. I guess Brother must have changed their toners to full toners (or Office Depot had a different SKU with starter cartridges). Either way, I definitely got starter cartridges included with mine. I haven't printed much since the first review, but I am now replacing toner cartridges. I have about 125 pages printed and all of the color cartridges are blinking (meaning low cartridge). And yes, I was stunned to see that the replacement high yield cartridges are retailing at ~$120 each! I just bought four off of ebay for about $85 each, which is still not cheap. However, these cartridges are rated at 3,500 pages (and 6,000 for the black), which works out to about $.09 per page for toner. If they last this long, then this will be a pretty good deal. If you are going to buy this printer, check to see if you are getting full cartridges! It's worth paying a bit more for the printer, IMO.
My advice

4Don't Buy Genuine Brother Toners!
By Ross Kendalll
This printer is great and worth 5 stars based on the printer's abilities alone, seriously, but Brother is a apparently "very enthusiastic" about regularly (and frequently) replacing half-full toners with new Genuine Brother toners, to the tune of about $70-80 each. Yeah, right. I happily bought a refill kit which has worked fantastically in both volume and print quality. I'm not changing, nor am I wasting an extra $150-$200 every 2-3 months for my toners.

I'm writing this review because a Brother Customer Support Technician wouldn't help me reset my toners. After hearing his lecture on Genuine Brother Toners and his adamant denial to help, I offered him an analogy. I simply asked if he went to a car dealership for "Genuine" oil, brakes, service, etc. EVERY TIME he had his car serviced. He of course had no answer after recognizing his own hypocrisy. So, to help others that may end up in my situation, here's how to reset your toners.

If you have the starter cartridges, you will need to buy a refill kit of some sort, and a flag gear, or reset gear (see below for links). If that is done and you are still receiving the "Replace Toner" message, here's what to do:

1- Turn on printer
2- Open front door to access toners
3- Hit the "Start" button for the Black and White copies on the right side of control panel
4- Quickly type in the number "10" on the numerical keypad (1 then 0, quickly in succession)
5- You will see a toner menu. Simply pick you color(s) and capacities and reset as needed.

You can now refill your toners to a high capacity level for about $20 each, vs. $80 for "genuine brother" toners. Your cost per page probably dropped to about 3 cents each.
THANK YOU Brother Customer Support for motivating me to post this review.
All the best everyone!

ADDITIONAL INFO 2 MONTHS AFTER ORIGINAL POST:
Print quality on multiple types of paper is just as good as "Genuine Brother" starter toners. The photo print quality of this color laser printer is lacking, but that is true for most color laser printers.

I don't have any affiliation whatsoever with any of the following companies/entities, but they posted the info I originally found, so, here's some links to take you step-by-step.
You can get toner and a flag gear here:
[...]
OR, I'm sure if you type in "Brother TN-310 or TN-315 toner refill" into ebay or google you'd come up with some links, possibly cheaper, better, etc.

Here's instructions on changing the toner and reset gear (AKA "flag gear"):

I have to say thanks to everyone who has rated this review as "helpful" on Amazon, it keeps it at the top of the listings and allows more printer purchasers to avoid getting taken for a ride on the Brother-Toner-Money-Train.
Take care-

5Excellent printer for small business (See tip below on how to make your toner last longer!)
By J. Rauch
We previously had 4 laser printers that have lasted no more than a year or so each. After becoming very tired of buying the cheap throw-away units, we decided to replace our old copy machine with an All-In-One. After a bit of research, the MFC-9970 seemed to be be the best choice. Although it is quite large, we have never looked back. It has been the best machine any of us have ever used! Perfect touch screen, beautiful prints, fast, and it seems to do everything and everyone loves it! The only complaint I would have had (that's resolved now), is that the toner didn't seem to go very far before seeing the "toner is low, replace soon" message. We ran it until it refused to print another copy, and then replaced the toner. After following the instructions in the manual to a 'T', we replaced the toner and closed the access door. After the first copy, we got the same message that the toner was low. After looking through the manual and every menu, it appeared there was no place to 'reset' the message. So I called Brother and a helpful tech gave me the instructions below on how to reset the toner.

Step 1.) Open front cover to expose printer cartridges and press #1 on the number keys.
Step 2.) Scroll down to find and select the appropriate toner cartridge to reset:

K.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)
K.TNR-HC (High Capacity)
K.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)
C.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)
C.TNR-HC (High Capacity)
C.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)
M.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)
M.TNR-HC (High Capacity)
M.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)
Y.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)
Y.TNR-HC (High Capacity)
Y.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)

Now we can run our cartridges until they begin to line out before replacing them! The secret that Brother does not want you to know about. Hopefully this tip will also save others as much money as it has saved us.

3Good but not great. Read Update
By D. Dell
I have two other Brother printers. One is an all-in-one inkjet and the other is a black and white laser printer. I've been happy with both of them and never had any problems. They did a fairly good job, but I wanted something a little better and thought a color laser printer would be the way to go.

This Brother MFC-9970CDW has good and bad points. First, the black printed letters are crisp and sharp. However, the color photos are only slightly above average in quality. Plus, there is some slight banding (lines) on solid prints. The banding is not too bad and hardly noticeable, but it should not do that. And I have tried everything the manual said to correct the problem, but nothing helped. Anyway, I can live with it.

The biggest complaint I have is the curling of the paper. Another reviewer is correct. The heavier weight the paper, the more severe the curling.

The speed for duplex printing is 6 pages in 1 minute and that is with plain text on one side and a map on the other side. Don't get fooled by the claims of fast printing under everyday normal conditions. In contrast, the scanner is extremely fast.

The OCR software with plain text is very accurate. Hand written text is another story and problematic at best. But then, that is to be expected.

Wireless setup was easy. The printer recognized the network then I just had to install the driver on my PC.

This printer can pull through heavy stock paper and the duplex printing is a real time saver. Plus, overall the printer does a fairly good job. However, if paper curl bothers you, then stay away from this printer.

Update on the page curling.
I discovered a way to help undue the severe curling caused by this printer. First take all of your blank paper out of the tray. Then place your printed curled paper FACE UP in the feed tray. Don't use more than about 50 pages at a time. And make sure the green sliding paper guide with 2 little hooks is in place on the end of the paper. This is necessary to hold the paper in place so the printer can pick up the sheets. Then launch a word processor. Tap the spacebar to fool the printer into thinking there is something to print. Set the number of pages to print, then tap print. After the paper runs through, the paper will curl in the other direction, but not as stiff. Take the paper in both hands and gently roll the curled ends back to straighten it. The result will be a nearly flat paper. Sounds like a lot of steps. But, try it and you'll find it only takes a matter of seconds to correct that terrible paper curl.
