One of the good ones!

The HP 890c Printer is a hard act to follow. Although a little long in tooth as far as age is concerned, this printer is a warhorse from hell. In my work, both as a police officer and engineer, I have used mine probably a lot more than most. I'd like to have a dollar for every page that has been thru my old 890. The other great thing is that ink supplies are readily available thru numerous sources. I have used my printer on the WinOS, OS2, and Linux without so much as a hint of a problem. These printers are starting to get old, but there's still a lot of fight left in them!

Jams constantly

This printer is good when it works. However, I have found that mine only works fifty percent of the time. The other fifty percent of the time it jams. Very aggravating.

The absolute worst printer on the market. Almost every page doesn't feed all the way through and one has to open and close a panel after this happening each time. Frustrating.

Solid printer, some minor annoyances

This printer works pretty well. It warms up fast and prints cleanly. The toner cartridges last a long time and are reasonably priced.

The paper feed system is a little bit poorly designed, however. The feed mechanism is not strong enough to handle thicker papers. I tried printing on light cardstock with this printer, but the paper got jammed every time. Also, the printer is designed such that you need to open a door on the front of it to put paper in. The rather large compartment revealed by this door tends to accumulate dust when the door is open (and it always is open unless you want to take all the paper out in between uses).

Another annoying thing about the Mac setup for this printer is that Dell does not supply a Mac-compatible driver for it. Despite the lack of official support from Dell, this printer will work on a Mac because it is the same printer as the Samsung ML-2010 other than the logo on the front. Just download the driver from Samsung's site if you want to use this printer with a Mac.

Attractive appearance like most Dell products. Very fast printing. Great print quality. Easy web access for configuring settings or you can use the panel on the printer. Just one small thing that I can't figure out. It regularly makes this mechanical movement sound as if always readjusting something. The sound is low and discreet but noticeable. Would be nice to know what it is in case it is a mechanical defect in progress.

Trouble-free Printer

We've owned a Laserjet 1200 for six years now, and have yet to have any real problem with it. It's a powerful workhorse that handles many printing tasks without difficulty. Even when the neighborhood power died and it stopped printing with paper caught in it, this printer unjammed without a hitch. The manual is also easily accessible online as a PDF. Pair it with the ultraprecise toner cartridge for great results.

HP 1200 - Replacement.

I had this same model printer for years and was very satisfied with it. After 10 years and well over 100,000 pages printed my first one gave out.

I bought a new printer and had more problems with it in one month than I did the HP 1200 in 10 years. I wish HP still made this printer. It is a big slower than the new models, but it is very reliable and I would gladly give up a little speed for the increased reliability.

This model is also slightly bigger than the newer ones, but not by very much.

I especially like the way it pulls the paper up. With paychecks you put them in face up and it is easier to have them print in order.

Support is difficult to get from HP. Always seem to have issues getting the integrated network card to recognize properly. Sometimes toner goes fast. Other times slow. Printer said to replace blue toner cartridge yet cartridge still works 3000 pages later.

Horrible quality - Lasted 6 weeks! [SEE UPDATE]

Not what you'd expect from HP's flagship model aimed at the enterprise, but it lasted exactly 6 weeks. After that, the LCD display went totally blank and it stopped responding to any network communications. HP sent a replacement circuit board -- the first one arrived snapped in half; the second arrived intact, although it is packaged so poorly that some of the prongs of the contacts on the board were actually stuck in the cover of the cardboard box. It certainly does not look like HP cares about quality at this point, so I am going to look for another brand.

Update 3/2013: We decided to hang on to the printer to see how it performed. We had to unbend the pins in order to fit the replacement board into the printer. However, since then, the printer has been a workhorse. No problems at all, high quality prints. I am revising my review from 1 star to 3 stars.
