bought it for my wife's home business and it is probably more than we require but I like the quality

We have only had this about a month but we are satisfied. The ink cartridges and paper tray are easily accessible. I really like having a paper tray so that dust does not settle on the paper between uses. The copier has a professional feel. Haven't really used the scanner (it was okay when I tested it) or fax yet so can't really say much about them. It was heavy, but once in place it was easy to setup and provides my wife with all the features she needs for her home business.

Great Printer

I've owned this printer for about 2 months and have printed about 5000 pages. I've owned HP laserjets since the days of the Laserjet III. My two previous color lasers were the HP 2600n and CP2025. The M251NW is a worthy successor to my old workhorse 2600n (the CP2025 was a P.O.S.)

Setup was easy. Connecting the printer wirelessly to my MacBookPro was effortless. The touch-screen control panel is more intuitive than any other HP printer I've owned. I am very happy with this printer.

The thing I am most happy about: I print from MS-Word and many of my documents include a color image in halftone as a watermark on every page. The M251NW does a better job of rendering this watermark than any printer I've previously owned.

The 'Toner is low' warning comes up way too early but you can easy bypass it and keep printing. There is still LOTS of toner left after the 'low toner' warning appears.

HP getting better but not there yet...

There is so much high-praise reviews of this printer that I thought i should post one to balance it out.

First a comment about HP laser printers in this price range. If you can purchase this printer with a add-on extended warranty, by all means do so. A lot of the times, extended warranties are a ripoff. But in the case of laser printers, they're worth it. This will be my third color laser printer. These puppies have a high wear/tear breakdown quotient.

My previous HP printers was a CP1525nw - which this printer replaces. After only a year and without heavy use (I was on 2nd set of toner cartridge), the printer experienced a paper jam. I called HP tech support and they told me that my only option for me to get a trade-in for a refurbished printer from them (they gave me $50 for the jammed printer). There was no service repair option. Amazing.

So word to the wise on HP printers in this price range: They're not built for heavy use or long term reliability. A simple paper jam and I had to toss my previous HP printer.

That said, the new series printer does print faster than the previous series. And HP seem to have addressed a major complaint (a chorus of complaints on discussion boards) having to do with print output being too dark. The tonality range has been improved.

HOWEVER (and this is a big one). color accuracy is off. Way off. I had to do a graphic printout with predominant purple theme, and the printer gave me blue! It could not reproduce the color purple at the default printer setting. Amazing. I got some purple only when the printer was set to Adobe RGB in the print dialog box. Further, for graphic work, the black level on a printed page eaves a lot to be desired.

This printer, then, is not for anyone doing critical color work. It's okay for the home office for sundry printing where color accuracy is not so paramount.

So that's my two cents.

Impressive printer

My printer arrived this evening and I had it set up and printing in about 20 minutes (about half of that time was just unpacking it). The first and most important lesson for me is that HP finally has wireless network setup figured out. All the agony of trying to get my earlier HP printers working on my wireless home network are now just a bad memory. I sat the printer down on my kitchen table and powered it up, stuck the installation CD in my laptop and walked thru the steps. About halfway thru you have to physically connect your computer to the printer with a USB cable OR manually enter the network information to allow the printer to connect to your wireless network. I chose the cable option. (In a subsequent step, it tells you when to disconnect the cable). You also have the option to permanently connect to a PC via a USB cable, but the wireless option is far more useful for me. Bottom line: it was just about as easy as getting my smartphone to connect to my wireless network.

Print quality: Absolutely visually stunning! You have the 600 DPI tack sharp print of a high quality laser printer and it is now in full color.

The one thing that surprised me a little is that it is bigger and heavier than I expected but not quite as large as my ancient laserjet 4 - which I gave away years ago. Still, it fits in the roll-out compartment in my desk that held my tiny HP 1122 laser printer. So it is still a very manageable size.

They might sell more of these if they took the words "monochrome printer" out of the product title. This is definitely a color laser printer. Some folks may find that product description confusing.

If this thing turns out to be anywhere near as reliable and durable as my older HP laserJet printers have been, then it is a home run purchase.

I will add more comments after I have used this printer for a few weeks. First impressions: awesome printer.

July 2013: After several months I found something to add to my original review. If you print envelopes, you have to remove and unload the paper tray and put your envelope in there. A minor inconvenience, but other HP printers I have owned had an envelope feed. This is minor - still a great printer and now I see it is even cheaper.

Excellent fast color printing but difficult to set up

I was looking for awhile to switch to a laser jet printer as I no longer have the patience to wait for my old inkjet printer to complete printing for every time. I have another high quality HP laser jet printer at work that I am very satisfied. Therefore, after reading other comments regarding this family of printers by HP, I decided to purchase this printer. The quality and speed is very satisfactory as others experienced; however, I spend literally 3 hours to set-up the printer. HP help desk person was finally remotely connected to my computer and spend 1 hour to get the software activated and communicate with the printer. HP should resolve these kinds of problems as I did not expect to loose so much time for setting up a printer. However, I am satisfied for the final product. Since it is a new printer, I don't know the issues that may be related to cartridge, expense of refilling etc.

An excellent all-in-one for small business

First, some background: for years, I have used HP black and white laserjet printers. They are work horses! The 4L I used a decade ago is still going strong, just really slow. (A friend makes use of it now). From there, we wanted the ability to duplex print, and went with a 1320nw. The wireless networking was a pain to set up with that one, but it has worked like a champ since that initial set up. My husband is a videographer part time, and makes professional quality HD videos for events, which he burns to DVD and designs full color covers for. For this, he has always used an inkjet printer. Popular opinion has been that color laser printers just couldn't compete for glossy photo quality printing, and he is very particular about his work looking professional. Unfortunately, the inkjet has been expensive (he can get maybe 15 full color covers out of each set of cartridges), and then recently, he began experiencing color inconsistencies. One cover would have different coloration than the exact same cover printed days later. Changing to new ink cartridges did not fix the issue, and we decided it was time to take a hard look at color laser printers. I carefully read reviews, and found that people liked the quality of prints from this model. The general consensus seemed to be that people were pleasantly surprised by the photo printing capabilities, with the caveat that for truly professional looking photos, have them printed by a pro place.

We figured that was probably good enough for our purposes, but we wanted to check it out in person first. We went and looked at the printer for ourselves at a local box store, and used it to copy a full color ad. We were completely impressed with the color and image quality, even on regular copy paper. The speed, while slightly slow compared to true commercial machines, was still plenty fast enough for us (a LOT faster than the inkjet we had been using). We bought the printer at a great price - another bonus, color laser printers are now not all that much more than a new inkjet. After we got it home, we set it up on our network in just a few moments. We are a MAC household, and downloaded the software from HP's website with no issues.

A note: if you're going to print on glossy paper for photos, MAKE SURE you get paper specifically for laser printers, not inkjet. The coating on the inkjet paper does not work with laser printers, and you risk doing your printer harm. We bought glossy "brochure paper" for laser printers that works great.

This printer comes pre-loaded with "trial" size toner cartridges, good for 700 pages of printing. The regular full size cartridges will be good for almost 2000 pages. Now, as color intensive as the DVD covers we print are, I imagine that 700 number will turn out to be a lot less. However, even if it is only 100-200 copies, it will be much, much cheaper than the inkjet was to produce our covers. The first thing we did was print up several of our covers after hooking up the printer. They printed quickly, flawlessly, and with color absolutely true to the colors we saw on our computer screen, something that was honestly a new experience for us. The picture quality is as good as our admittedly 4 year old inkjet, perhaps better since we never experience the occasional streaky lines on the laser. My husband went through and reprinted covers for every DVD currently in his library of work, some 15 different pages. All of them printed perfectly. We then used the copier on several of them to compare the quality of the "copies" with the original print. They were indistinguishable to us. The scanner was next. It took a little figuring out that we needed to de-select the option that has it search for individual parts in order to get a full page scan, but it worked fine, something our old all-in-one never did. The fax is something we won't ever use, since it requires a land line, and we don't have one. But the scanner means we can just scan and e-mail documents anyway, so the fax is superfluous.

We are completely happy with our new color laserjet, and if it holds up as well as the black and white versions we've had, I expect we'll still be using it several years from now. The only thing that may eventually force an upgrade will be speed, but honestly, it's plenty fast for us right now. I couldn't recommend this printer more for the price.

UPDATE: It has been a month and a half, and we are still just as pleased with our purchase. The only thing missing is native duplex printing, which we already have in our black & white laserjet, so it's really not a huge issue for us. Most duplex jobs are black and white for our needs. But the reason I wanted to write this update: we are still using the trial size cartridges. We have printed perhaps 50 full color covers (and some random other stuff, not as intensive), and only the black cartridge has dropped to 30% ink capacity. The color cartridges are at 50-60% still. Given this, I think it is likely that we'll get another 25 or so out of these trial version before we have to go with the full size cartridges. This is a savings of something like 4 times over what our old inkjet did. When we get the full size cartridges, our numbers will easily double.

UPDATE #2: WARNING: use only actual HP toner cartridges with this printer! We tried to save a few bucks by going with a generic brand that was supposed to be compatible. The new ink ruined our printer. I don't know if it was just a bad batch, bad luck or whatever. But a $3-400 printer is not worth ruining over $40 in ink. We ended up buying a new printer, and the genuine HP cartridges work great.

Warning, Wireless network may need firmware update

I purchased the HPlaserjet pro 200 printer to support a houseful of devices including ipad, Microsoft surface RT, Windows 8 Dell XPS8500, and various smart phones. This is a replacement for a HPlaserjet 5M and an all in one inkjet that were not compatible with windows8 RT. Unfortunately to get the printer recognized by the network and properly communicating with any devices was a long up hill struggle. This was not due to any HP printer related issues in the long run, but was eventually solved by updating the firmware on a linksys e3000 wireless router to the latest version. Prior to this, I had no issues with the network or devices communicating on it. Once that was achieved, driver device software installation was easy and quick on all computers. Even my Surface had no problems printing. The HP support for this printer is only available during weekday business hours by phone, and off hours via chat. I tried to use the chat support, but ran out of time to go through their menu of ideas. I wonder if they would have suggested updating a fairly new router. Printing is fast, and high quality. Those that expect manual feeding for envelopes or special paper stock will be dissapointed. I have not tried the scanning to usb or otherwise as of yet.

I wanted a wireless color laser printer with a sheet feeder and scanner. It was very easy to setup and it scan's to my network share flawlessly. The apps are pretty impressive too - albeit not something I use very often. Size was important to me too. Its big, but for a color laser multi-function, its actually small.

This is a dye ink printer, not a pigment ink system.

Epson's newest series of portable printers seem like a downgrade compared with their previous printer, the picturemate deluxe.

The prints speeds are improved a bit in some of these new printers, but all these new printers use a dye based ink system instead of pigment based ink. Pigment based ink is used in Epson's professional line of printers because the ink has been tested to last 200 years in a photo book or 100 years in a glass frame. Notice that Epson does not comment on how long prints will last from these dye ink printers.

Though, for the average consumer, they may find the other features of this printer appealing. It has a faster print speed compared with the picturemate deluxe. I own the picturemate deluxe and do not find it's print speed too slow. I'm sure the print quality of the picturemate pal will long just as nice, but it will not be suitable for archival prints if this is important to you.

A great printer!

This is a great little printer. The size is appealing, and it's easy transportable (with a convenient carry-handle on top). Unfortunately it does not have a battery, so it must still be plugged in.

I really like the fact that the ink and paper are purchased together, and the quantities of both seem to line up fairly well, so I'm not running out of one or the other at different times.

As far as the ink goes, I'm not sure what the other reviewer is talking about, because, according to Epson, even the different kind of ink this printer uses is still archival quality.

I think the picture quality is good for the price of this machine.

I love this printer!

This is a great printer. The photo quality is fantastic and it's super easy to use. The borders are also very fun. I made my own Christmas cards this year!

There are more print layout options when you use it as a standalone printer (not through the PC) like printing wallet size.
