Be careful with setup, or you will be sorry!!

I have a very simple office environment and have used HP laserjet printers, or equivalent, for over 25 years. When this new printer arrived, the installation was pretty straightforward. THEN, I was asked whether I wanted a Basic setup, or the HIGHLY RECOMMENDED setup that would give me higher levels of functionality, etc., that required the accompanying disc to be inserted and installed. I thought that I should stick to Basic but for some reason opted for the HIGHLY RECOMMENDED setup.
BIG MISTAKE!!!!!
Unless you are using the .NET MicroSoft services, STAY AWAY from their HIGHLY RECOMMENDED setup option.
After a few hours of swearing at MicroSoft and all things Windows, I managed to uninstall the HIGHLY RECOMMENDED program and went back to square one and installed the BASIC option.
Nice printer, just be careful on installation and setup!!

HP Happy

After having a previous HP printer that for 14 years that I LOVED (and probably can't count on one hand how many jams it ever had), this HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n was the chosen replacement printer. I do a fair amount of heavy printing but I don't need anything fancy - just a good 'ole solid printer is what I want. So far this one seems to fit the bill and I'm pleased with it. Hopefully it lasts just as long. More specific details/thoughts below.
Setup - easy, no problems. I unpacked it by myself and think I had it up and running probably within 15 minutes, maybe less.
Noise - fairly quiet. All printers are a little noisy but I would consider this one on the less noisy scale.
Speed - Very pleased with the speed. I'm not looking for rocket fast. Probably the only thing that I think "got me," and one of the reasons I reduced the rating to a 4 star, is that after it prints so many pages (maybe 25-30) it pauses. I initially thought it paused until I removed the paper - like there was a weight limit maybe on top where the paper comes out. I was really put off by this and was unhappy about that, however, after doing some work from home one evening and printing everything to the office (MUCH more than 25-30 pages), I was expecting to come in the next morning to it only printing half of what I sent until I would remove it and it could finish...BUT....it printed everything!!! It was then that I realized that it must pause to catch up with itself when I send a large print job or multiple things in a row and I didn't wait long enough to realize this before that time.
Trays - you may have to get used to the fact that the way you load the paper in the bottom tray is not the same way you load paper into the bypass tray (they are complete opposite of each other). Not a big deal, but it's something I've had to get used to.
Jams - although it did tear one piece of paper, I have had no jams yet.
Alerts - the biggest reason I reduced it to a 4 star rating is that when the printer is out of paper, there is no alert that comes up on my computer screen to tell me. I strongly feel this should be standard and don't understand why it wouldn't do something so simple. In the big picture it's pretty minor, but I don't like it, and think there's room for improvement with this.
Overall...I would recommend this printer.

Nice compact laser printer at a very affordable cost

This printer was installed as a first time printer in an office of two PC's. They have use of other printers throughout the building, but never really had one of their own. It's quick and efficient and the wireless capabilities have proven very handy for mobile smart phone and iPad users alike.
Installation is simple and straightforward. Have your network key handy and you'll have no trouble with installation.
The printer has been installed now for about a month and no complaints whatsoever.
Good printer for the price. Would recommend this for a small or home office with low to medium print needs.
