5Phenomenal Printer
By Bass Cadet
This is a great printer. However you view it, it not only meets, it surpasses expectations. Many people would be content with an all-in-one (AIO) that prints, copies, scans, and faxes with minimal setup and maintenance. Wireless network printing would be a nice bonus. Color printing would also be a nice bonus. Low cost per page would be another nice bonus.

This goes well beyond even those features. It has automatic two-sided printing and the Premium model includes a second paper tray. I had a paper jam, possibly due to having an almost empty paper tray, and the OfficeJet provided visual prompts for clearing the jam on its screen, just like the expensive machines at work. It is truly office quality.

What is also impressive is the low power requirements for this printer. Using a wattmeter, I measured the operating (9W for downloading a printer app, 28W for printing), idle (6.8W), and power saving (3.6W) modes. Compare this with a Canon MF5770 laser AIO operating (500W peak, which I measured twice because I could not believe it was that high), idle (20.6W), and energy saving (14.0W) modes. The OfficeJet also started and completed printing much sooner than the MF5770, which took minutes to warm up.

The Canon has done its job reasonably well. I particularly like the scan to PDF feature and used it often. My wife used the networking capability for printing. This OfficeJet takes that to another level. My only setup issue was trying to get the USB and Ethernet connections working. I should have gone straight to WiFi. Unlike the MF5770, this printer can perform all its functions through a WiFi connection. The wireless setup was as simple as possible: just specify the (hidden) network and enter the key. It did the rest.

I was unaware about ePrint and printer apps. Once I learned about them, I became excited and tried them out. They work well on the OfficeJet. With ePrint, I can send prints from anywhere (well, that is on my approved contact list) using my printer's email address. The printer apps are even better. I printed some games and activities for my children, made some notebook and music paper, and was trying to find even more apps! The only bad part is some apps are not yet available for this model. HP has an ePrint and printer app forum and I am hoping more printer apps are forthcoming.

This printer is still going strong with no issues. I recently needed to print passport pictures and my Epson R2400 was acting up. Short on time, I tried the 8500A with cheap photo paper. The results were actually quite good--good enough to be accepted and on our passports.

3Okay printer but needs the bugs worked out!
By Veteran
I received this printer from Amazon on 12/16/2010 and the box was a little beat up on one side but nothing in the box was damaged. The initial setup was easy and the printer looks great but it went down hill after that. It makes many noises when powering up, just FYI! The ePrint function would not work and finally I had to get tech support involved to try and resolve the issue. After about 45 minutes of checking this and that, it was finally determined by the tech (which was in India, come on HP give some Americans jobs!) that the problem was with HP's ePrint server. I was told to try again in 24 hours and see if the server was back up. I finally got that working after 8 days but I had another issue, and this is the one that was the worst. If I had to live without ePrint, so be it. But I can't live with lines in my printouts. I had horizontal lines in every page I tried to print or if I made copies. I did the clean printheads, align printheads, calibrate linefeed, over and over again. I would print the Quality Report and it would still show lines. I removed the ink cartridges and printheads, power off with button held in and power cord unplugged from printer, checked HP's website for diagnosing the problem and they recommended replacing the printheads after doing all that I had done. Okay, this is a NEW printer and I have to replace the printheads already? Are you kidding me? I am not going to spend another $100 plus to replace the printheads. So, today I finally call HP support because enough was enough and again I get a guy in India. Nice guy and I explained everything that I had done already to this point and he had me try a few other things but it didn't work. It was determined that the printer has a hardware issue. So, HP is going to send me a REFURBISHED printer at no cost to me provided I get the current one sent back within three days and HP must receive it within 15 days or I get charged for a NEW one??? I guess I could of sent this back to Amazon but then I would have been charged shipping charges and it is an opened product and most of the ink is already used. I don't know what the charges would of been but so be it and I need a printer. If the refurbished one doesn't work, then they will have to send me another one until I get one that works without problems...so, maybe I will end up with a new one after all.

Anyway, the printer is fast, makes fast copies, and the scanner is fast. I don't use the fax, so I don't know how well that works. I like the touch screen but I do wish that HP had put an arm for support on the scanner/copy lid because it doesn't have one. You have to be careful with that! Making copies with front and back is pretty quick, quicker than I thought it would be. It's not a bad printer but HP needs to get the bugs worked out. For those of you who have had no problems with your printer, be thankful. For me, this is a learning experience and this is also my first HP printer. I have always hated their printers and thought they were junk because of places where I worked they had HP printers and they were always breaking down. I have either had Canon or Epson printers but neither company had a printer that had these capabilities. The ePrint is a very nice feature. It's nice to be at work and be able to print something to this printer while I am still at work.

Would I recommend this printer? Yes, but with hesitation. If Canon, or even Epson, had a printer that had these capabilities, I would have most certainly bought on of those, especially the Canon. I have had three Canon printers and one Epson and I only had to have one Canon repaired and it was still under warranty. I guess the more functions the printer has the more that can go wrong.

I will try to update this when I get the refurbished printer because I would like to let you know the continuing story. So, until next time....

Update...

I got my NEW printer, not REFURBISED, on 1/6/2011 and it works as it is suppose to work. This printer is much quieter, no lines in the printouts. The ink consumption is low and printouts look good. Now I can give it 4 stars but the reason I don't give it 5 stars is because the scanner/copier lid does not have a support arm. If you are doing lots of photos, then this is not the printer you want. I do recommend it for printing webpages, documents, spreadsheets and any other general type printing. The best thing about it is it's wireless and the ePrint on this printer worked the first time. Setup is easy and now I have a printer that works!

I sent the bad printer back on 1/8/2011 and HP received it today. Thanks HP for the service and Amazon for the low price!

5Thanks, HP!
By J. Schmidt
I have only had this printer a few days, and all I can say is "WOW!" First a bit about purchasing from Amazon.com: It's over $100 cheaper than at local office supply stores here (I saved $160 including tax), Amazon's service and delivery are A-1, and the printer arrived in great condition.

Now about the printer: I've never had such a nice printer. In draft mode, it prints about 35 ppm, and the pages are very legible. Color copies are beautiful. For a home based business or even a small business, you can print your marketing materials on this and they will look professionally done. The touch screen is great, the set-up was basically plug and play. The fact that it takes two-sided copies for faxing, copying and scanning saves so much time.

One thing that's lacking: I wish it came with a complete instruction manual, instead of just the fax manual, though.

I love this printer! You should buy one -- from Amazon.com!

4Excellent Photos... but a bit expensive

By R. Jones

The Olympus printer truly produces photos that are indistinguishable from those you'd get in the photoprocessing stores or online photo sources.

Unfortunately, the printer prints on the dark side and colors on all photos must be brightened (almost to the point of color blow out) to correct this. Also, the printer drivers didn't install correctly for me. The default appears to be Spanish rather than English. Reinstalling using the provided CD has not rectified the problem.

Also, potential purchasers must seriously consider whether about $29 is a reasonable price for 100 prints, because that is what the printer packs cost. Yes, the convenience of printing at home (or during travel) is grand, but many online companies now offer volume pricing for print orders.

5printers for dummies

By John Sandwell

This is the printer that I have been waiting for. It does exactly what I hoped for. The color is rich. The pics look as good or better than a processing house would do...and much quicker. Very simple to use, even I couldn't screw it up. Highly recommend.

5VERY PLEASED WITH PRINTER

By Robert A. Ross

Very happy with this printer. I am, always, concerned with quality performance. But, also with price. I wanted a photo printer that I could print right here at my computer and not have to go to some store to print out. So, the price of paper and printing film was a concern, too, but not to important for the low quantity I print. This printer was less than half price to purchase from Amazon.com, and the paper and film less than half price, too. So, I feel I am getting what I wanted at the price I was willing to pay. Can't beat that! Plus, the most important part, the prints are absolutely beautiful, every time. I recommend this printer and Amazon.com price and service.

1Canon Fails on ink chips / ink cost

By James P.S.

Canon replaced the ip4700 with the ip4820. It is virtually the same printer but with different ink chips. You cannot buy generic inks (as of 1-18-11) for your ip4820 as you could the ip4700. I own about 200 canon printers and 200 canon cameras. I love Canon but I cannot afford your high cost ink set. And last, Canon please make it an option in your driver or firmware to be able to stop random, endless, printer head cleanings. It is annoying, slows done photo printing and wastes expensive ink. There is a reason why the older ip3000 is a highly sought after printer on the used market. Cheap inks, no chips, no random deep cleanings, great print quality.

I would not suggest buying this printer unless you want to pay really high ink costs.

5I LOVE this printer!!!!

By M. Buehl

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, and I am LOVING this printer!!
When you first get it, make sure you set aside some time to set it up. It takes a bit of time to get it all together and install the software, but the instruction guide makes it VERY simple with easy/clear step by step instructions. (really, I promise, super user friendly)
I was happy to see that it comes with a sample of three sheets of Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II so I could test it out right away. I was blown away with the quality of these prints! Side by side with mail order developing and pharmacy developing, I couldn't tell a difference, except I actually prefer the Canon paper. I immediately ordered Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II, 4 x 6 Inches, 400 Sheets (2311B031) from Amazon.
The paper is so easy to load, unlike my previous paper which I had a hard time lining up the photo paper just right..the Canon is VERY user friendly. Pictures are printed suprisingly quick, they state aprox 20seconds, but it was quicker! As a document printer it is lightning fast as well (yes, it isn't just for pictures;)!
I've been having SO much fun playing around on [...] (Canon's "Creative Park" website)! I'm already planning our Christmas cards to be printed at home so also ordered Hallmark Premium Blank 4x8 Photo Cards from Amazon. :)
One thing to note, this is not wireless and does not include the necessary USB cable..which wasn't a problem for us since we had an extra from our previous printer.
I couldn't be happier with this and highly recommend!

5Great Affordable Photo Printer

By Tarik E. Sivonen

We have used Canon PIXMA printers for five years. They have all been affordable upfront costs and reasonable ink costs. They have all been very impressive with photo prints they have created.

We didn't want a scanner. Already have one that is fantastic (it is an HP). We don't need a memory card reader. We only need a printer. The PIXMA iP4820 fits that perfectly! This one replaces the four year old iP4300 that did a very good job. It has certainly improved the speed and image quality.

5Great Printer!

By booksy

I purchased this printer after a lot of research here on Amazon and elsewhere. This printer is replacing an old Epson Stylus Photo 780 that I've had for years. I was really unhappy with the Epson because the ink heads clogged up constantly. I also wanted the newest printer possible, since I've had problems with other devices not updating their drivers, so this printer fit the bill.

The Canon printer has been wonderful for me so far. It was easy to set up and install and worked right away. I'm using Snow Leopard on a Mac, so I had to download the actual driver from Canon's web site, but this is easy to do and pretty self-explanatory.

I love that the printer is all enclosed. The regular paper sits in a tray at the bottom, and everything can be closed up so that dust doesn't get into it. Photo paper is loaded at the rear.

This printer has individual ink cartridges, a plus in my opinion.
I am using it lightly (10-15 regular color pages, 1-2 photos per week) so I have not dented the supply level on the ink cartridges, and can't really comment on how fast the ink runs out. The print quality is pretty good for the regular paper, and very good for photos. I was very impressed with the photos that I printed, they were sharp and the color was great.

The software drivers are adequate and not too confusing. I found this printer very easy to use and of good quality. I'm very happy with it, and it's miles better than my old Epson.

3A Change of Opinion 8 Months Later. Originally, a Beautiful High Resolution Photographics, Eats Ink, But a Great Step Up

By Ethan A. Winning

Aug. 2010, 8 months later: I've had to change my opinion of this printer. It still puts out the best photos I've seen from any inkjet printer, and I've had my share. The colors are true and vivid. However, to get true and vivid, you can go broke on the ink. This printer was costing me so much in ink that I no longer print a "good photo" until two to three weeks after taking it. That's just to be sure that it's as good as I initially thought, haven't taken a better shot since, and that I'm willing to use the ink. And, I've switched from 8x10 to 5x7 prints. In 8 months, I've spent over $300 on ink!!!!

Second, I couldn't understand why everyone was complaining about how slow this printer was. When I first got it, I thought it was fast. Now, it's either slowed down to a snail's pace, or I'm just now paying attention.

This is not my primary printer, and I wasn't really paying attention until one day I didn't use my LaserJet IV (almost 18 years old and still going strong, but B&W), and just left it set on the PIXMA, and I swear it took the better part of 5 minutes to get around to printing the photo. Then, I printed a one page black and white note. Not even the font was fancy: Times Roman, 12 pt. It took 90 seconds to get a page printed.

Why the difference in perception? I warned in my initial review that you had to set the printer on "draft" when printing just a B&W document. Well, after printing a batch of photos on high quality, I forgot to reset it to draft. It's a pain in the ... neck, but the difference in speed is phenomenal. And "draft quality" is actually very good for a document, even a document that has a few color font changes.

Would I recommend this printer? No. Would I buy it again? Probably, and the reason is that I just don't know what printer would have the quality of prints. Speed is not that important when it comes to my photographic endeavors. Speed is important for the handbooks and manuals that I write, and my old HP has yet to fail me. If speed and ink costs are important, DO NOT buy this printer. In a Wall Street Journal article from last year, it stated that 80% of HP's profits come from in sales. What? You thought that a $79 printer was too good to be true? Well, I've known about ink costs for many years, but I've had Canon, Epson, and HP printers and they can all drive you to the poorhouse when it comes to ink. Canon has the best prints, but what good is it if you can't afford the ink to run it. And now, instead of dying with a load of ink on my hands, I'm going to die with a load of 8x10 photo paper. HP photo paper at that. Everybody wins but me. ;.)

And now back to our regularly scheduled review. From December 2009, unchanged.

I waited a month before writing this review, wanting to make sure that I gave the printer its due, and be fair to what it turns out to be its one fault, common to almost all inkjet printers.

In one sentence: this is a well-designed, beautifully made, great printer than does everything I want, and then some. In more than one sentence...

We all know that printer manufacturers make 80% of their profits from ink. Well, the problem with this Canon, is that that's going to 90%. However, since the quality and speed of print is so much better than the Canon 150 that it replaced, I can't officially complain until next year.

I don't use several of the functions of the higher end PIXMAs such as directly printing from the camera (it's best to format the card after a day of shooting), and my primary printer is still a 17 year old black and white HP LaserJet. But, I wanted this printer as a spare for that inevitable day when I'll need a printer for text, billing, and such. Until that day, I'll have leftover black cartridges, and will have spent a small fortune on the cyan, magenta, and yellow which come to about $38 for the three, the same price as getting the black thrown in.

I bought the printer with what I figured was a year's supply of ink. Well, the first thing I notices was that the cartridges are 25% smaller than the same Canon 150's, and the 150's don't fit this printer. I've often said that the old bumper sticker, "Whoever dies with the most toys wins," is inaccurate. Actually, the one who "wins" is the one who dies just as the last cartridge runs out of ink, and you also get to miss the last dentist appointment that week. Well, it's never going to happen, and we'll just face the fact that we're helping the economy by having all odd ink cartridges that have no other use and will leave a carbon and cyan, and yellow, and magenta "footprints" in the ecology of our world.

A nice feature is that the cartridge lights up when it's running out of ink. It's a little disconcerting when three of the four are lit like it was Christmas all over again, but it it's good to know which one needs replacing without having to read which color is which.

Seriously, the printer is fast, convenient, and I prefer the wired rather than the wireless printers to maintain the speed and to avoid problems with home networks which can lose their signal in the middle of an 8x10 high res photo. Fair warning: I bought a pack of 100 4x6 photo paper so that my wife could have "hard copy" prints of the grandkids. I don't use Canon's software, but something similar. And, since it was Christmas (and birthday) time around here, the pack of 100 (especially set on multiple and batch printing) lasted ... maybe 15 minutes.

IF you use Canon's high glossy photo paper - which in most cases I do recommend - either separate the photos individually and let them dry, or leave them in the tray for 15-20 minutes. With 8x10's it's best left overnight to make certain that they are dry. HP paper dries faster, and both work find with this printer.

I also found that the 4700 will "conserve" print if you don't check the "Highest Quality" box in the properties before printing. It'll save 20-30% of the ink. However, there are some photos where you just have to have long-lasting, high quality photos. I like to print out prize-winning photos (as well as a few wedding pix), and noted that I might get 15 8x10s from these really small cartridges. (See examples of some photos which require this at the free site, [...]. Some of the scenics, and even one of a colorful kestrel an take an enormous amount of ink. Sooooo, the alternative is to really think about which photos you want for an album that you may never look at again.)

By the way, plain black and white print is extremely fast once the document is in the queue, and here's a plus that very few have thought of: the Canon iP4700 can be stopped in mid-print, quickly and easily. If you change your mind or see an error, one click and the printer stops printing. This is my 4th non-LaserJet printer, and by far my favorite. Let's hope it doesn't break the bank.

1Newer isn't always better

By Gary Kitchen

My trusty Pixma iP5200 bit the dust a few weeks ago due to an unknown problem. It always functioned well, and was very reliable and produced excellent results. I depended on it for all my regular printing, especially the hidden feature for printing on CD/DVD discs. They came out beautifully in about 30 seconds. It was time to move on and upgrade. Or so I thought.

First, I had to wonder why Canon produced the Pixma iP5200 several years before the new iP4700 came along. What's up with that?! Nevermind. I went ahead and ordered the 4700. After receiving it and setting up, I discovered several troubling things. I noticed it takes forever to start up when you send it a print job. Several minutes at least, all the while spewing wasted ink during way too many cleaning cycles. And if the unit wasn't already turned on, it was reported as Offline by the computer and has to be manually powered on, not very user-friendly!

To add insult to injury, Canon doesn't seem to be getting paid enough for their ink cartridges, and so, to improve revenues, has reduced the newer CLI-221 cartridge capacity to a mere 9 mL of ink, and drained the PGI-220 to only 19 mL. The older CLI-8's had 13.6 mL in them, and the PGI-5 Bk had 26 mL! That's over 30% less ink you are paying the same amount of money for, and the printer goes through more cleaning cycles than it's predecessors did. You do the math!

The last straw for me was finding out that the printer does not print CD/DVD discs. This was a very important feature to me. Units sold in Europe are endowed with this capability as a standard feature. I was able to utilize the hidden feature in my previous iP5200 by reprogramming it for Euro mode, and using CDLabelPrint (which, by the way, works wonderfully and can print all the way to the 17mm center hole!).

Bottom line, I ended up selling the printer 1 week after purchasing it to a friend who did not need the CD/DVD printing feature, and acquiring a Canon iP4500 legacy printer (the very last model produced which does CD/DVD printing, now sadly discontinued).

Beware of this unit's limitations. It will print very high quality photos, and does fast and crisp text. However, your consumables costs for ink are going to much higher (unless you know how to refill using quality inks), and the issues with no CD/DVD option and refusing to print from a power-off state pushed it over the edge for me.
