5Fantastic photo printer
By Patrick C. Miller
I bought the Artisan 835 to replace an HP C6280 that I'd had for about three years. Initially, I liked the HP printer. According to QualityLogic.com, the C6280 is one of HP's most economical printers in terms of cost of ink per page. However, I found that when it came to printing photos, the C6280 was hit and miss. Sometimes with a some experimentation, I could get a decent print. Other times, I'd give up in frustration after several tries. I also got inconsistent results with the C6280's scanner, and I found HP's software increasingly bloated and difficult to use.

I decided to get an Epson Artisan after reading what digital photographers said about the quality of its photo prints and looking at some samples prints at a local store. I was somewhat wary of reports that the Artisans were "ink hogs." Although I've used HP printers for many years, I was willing to give Epson a try. I've been very satisfied with my decision.

Setting up the 835 was a breeze. I have it networked to three wireless laptops, two wired desktop PCs and a wireless desktop PC. I was pleasantly surprised that installing Epson's software was fast and easy. The first test I performed was making a 4 x 6 print of a photo that I'd never been able to get quite right with my HP printer. To my amazement, the 835 produced a flawless print on the first attempt without any adjustments. I immediately tried some other prints, including a few 8 x 10s. Only in one case in which an image was not properly cropped did I feel the need to make more than one print. Printing photos is now a joy.

I found the scanner fast and easy to use. The scanning results are also impressive. The ability to create and print labels for CDs and DVDs is a welcome capability. The fax, duplexer, document feeder and PictBridge port (which can double as a USB charger) are useful features. The touch screen menu is very intuitive.

Although I think the Artisan 835 is worthy of five stars, it's not perfect. The paper drawer is flimsy and the simple act of properly aligning paper in it can be a pain. In printing two-sided documents on plain paper -- even when using 24-pound paper -- the ink sometimes bleeds or shows through. If document printing is your primary use, you might be happier with an HP printer. The 835 is a large printer, so make sure you have plenty of space before you buy it.

The most important thing I've learned is that when it comes to photo printers, "ink hog" is a relative term. Although the cost of prints produced by my HP C6280 are slightly less than those printed with the Artisan 835, the fact that I can almost always produce a high-quality print on the first attempt makes the overall cost of the 835's ink far less. For digital photographers who want an all-in-one that produces fantastic prints, the Artisan 835 is tough to beat.

3EPSON 835 GREAT PRINTER BUT TERRIBLE PAPER HANDLING
By E. Norton
I have had several printers made by Epson, Canon and HP and never had the difficulties I have had with this machine with paper handling. The design of the paper handling tray is terrible. It is awkward to load and constantly spits out several blank sheets along with the printed copy even after fanning the paper before loading. At times it picks up one of the 4 x 6 photo paper in the photo paper tray even though it is suppose to print on the 8 1/2 x 11 sheets. It won't print thicker (64 lb) sheets or on file folder stock (the other printers had no problem). It does print well when these problems don't take over. It drinks up ink (expected) but must be replaced after 6 months. It can cost as much as $95 to replace the ink cartridges from Epson. Their tech service people are very difficult to understand and there is usually a long waiting period to talk to someone and you pay for the call!!!! I have owned Epson product before but am really disappointed with the 835 because of the above.

5Amazing
By A. Stroup
I am not a computer expert and usually something goes wrong everytime I buy something to add to the computer. I bought this machine two days ago and followed the provided instructions to hook it up and install the software. Everything went perfect, no hiccups. Today I decided I'd copy a colored 4 x 6 picture. I put it on the scanner and used the touchscreen to set up the printer, no problems. I pushed start and away we go! In no time I had a beautiful copy of the photo. It is so simple to use its amazing. Trust me, if I can do it anyone can. This is a machine, not a household printer. I always had HP and decided to try Epson because I have a home theater projector that is flawless and professional. I will never buy another brand. This machine is heavy duty, not some cheap household lightweight junk. You will be amazed if you buy one, in a good way. The HP is going on Craigs list tomorrow.

1Good Until you run out of ink
By Walters Judson Group
We have purchase over 200 of these printers (even here at Amazon)
and they are pretty good - until you run out of ink.

The Ink can print you about 2-3 months worth if used every
other day or so. But our customers, including ourselves,
have had nothing but head aches when it comes to changing
Ink Cartridges. 47 Customers have complained it will NOT
ACCEPT 'GENUINE' Epson Cartridges. We owned 4 of them and
all 4 are currently wrapped up in their boxes ready to throw
out or send to a recycling center. All 4 printers
printed through 1 ink cycle - then they started rejecting all
ink replacements. We bought ink here at Amazon - rejected.
We tried the tech trick of pulling out the electrical cord,
and the USB cord, and it did accept 2 or 3 cartridges,
but eventually it started to reject all of them in time.
Keep in mind this printer has gotten fairy good reviews
the past year - some individuals are being successful
with the printer but we suspect many reviews were
written before their 1st ink cycle went dry.

We noticed that (after installing the printers) The Epson
software started accessing the internet (or at least trying
to). This was to block any 3rd party Ink cartridges - because
on one of the printers that WAS NOT on the internet - it actually
acceptable 1 black ink 3rd party cartridge. The rest were
rejected - even the "Genuine" Epson Cartridges.

Its difficult enough to have to purchase expensive
"Genuine" ink for these printers - but to have them
rejected by your fairly new printer is appalling. We
have over 46 "genuine" ink cartridges that have been
returned to us (we no longer sell the ink). We used
some of the "rejected" ink on our Epson R260 models
and R280 model (those printers accepted the ink)
simply because the R260, R280 and this model -
"artisan" 50 use the same ink cartridge.

Customers have explained to us this printer model
has difficulty on accepting new cartridges - no matter
where you purchased them. We have contacted
Epson by email, phone - even writing them a letter,
but they yet to even try to return our messages.
Customers who have purchase this model, and have
not been subjected by the cartridge problem are very
fortunate and we are happy for them.

Overall, Epson has made this printer so INK
CARTRIDGE RESTRICTIVE that it has made us
impossible to recommend to anyone or even
give out for free.

While printing through its first ink cycle, it did
produce fine photos and fairly good text docs,
but after the ink was done - it seems so was
the printer.

Update: We installed a CISS system on one
of the printers on Feb 1 2011: rejected.
On January 20th, the same model rejected
"Genuine ink" from a major store front. We
were fortunate to receive a refund on both
occasions. We aren't trying anymore. Epson
keeps ignoring our calls.

2Good but way to quirky
By CD Expert
This is a fantastic printer for the casual user, but can be problematic for critical uses.

This is the 6th Epson printer we've used. When printing out from Adobe Illustrator on all previous models, the size of the printout exactly matches the design.

When trying to print CD inserts on our new Artisan 50, booklets that are designed to be 119.5mm, end up being almost 125mm. May not sound like much, but once they're cut, they don't fit in the CD box. It's very slow and tedious to modify all our layouts that are on file.

Previous models capable of printing on CD's (such as the Stylus Photo R300) were dead on accurate.

The other annoying problem is that you can't print from Illustrator directly to CD any longer. That was a great feature of the R300. In the Artisan 50, you have to use their amateurish CD print utility.

1DO NOT BUY THIS PRINTER! Or ANY Epson...
By PorscheBob
You have probably read a great deal of reviews about how wonderful the Epson Artisan 50 printer is. And as far as printing goes, especially on CDs, those reviews are spot on. Only one problem. I will wager the overwhelming majority of those 5 star reviews are coming from people who have yet to go through their first replacement cartridge cycle. Oh what a surprise they have in store for them. The SOB corporate scum at Epson engineered the printers to a) use only 60-70% of the ink in their OEM cartridges, b) retailed their own 6 OEM cartridges at prices ranging from a minimum of 350% to over 1200% of what non-OEM ink cartridge suppliers are charging (up to $35 a single cartridge) and c) have a chip-reset technology installed in the printers which will "fail to recognize" the vast majority of all non-OEM catridges and an estimated 33% of the GENUINE OEM cartridges. This is AFTER the company was sued in a 2006 case for doing the exact same thing and then went out and re-engineered the Artisan series of printers to be even WORSE!

I swear to gawd, you can't make this crap up. As is well known, it only requires one cartridge requiring replacement in an Artisan model to disable the entire machine. Meaning that if you have a black print job to do and the yellow or light magenta cartridge is below it's functional level (usually meaning 30-40% of the ink remains but can't be used due to the technology they installed to rip people off), you can't finish your black only print job. And NO...every one of the six colors is NOT required to print black like I have heard some wags out there stating falsely. Even if that were true, in an emergency where you needed to print a single black text page out, you couldn't even print it in lighter gray to get by. If you buy the non-OEM cartridges you might...just MAYBE get one or two of them to work for 2 or 3 off and on cycles of the printer, but eventually they will require replacement when the orange print light starts blinking and the "non-compatible" error appears on your screen. This is apparently due to the ability of the software to stealth "report" information on the replacement cartridges through Epson's online access portal and then order the printer to shut down if the information retrieved fails to jibe with an OEM chip code. Even if you buy the OEM cartridges (which I did) and get lucky through the first four or five recycles, once you hit the end cartridge (dark cyan) the party is over. I have yet to hear of an Epson Artisan 50 that made it through two OEM dark cyan replacements without a cartridge rejection. Mine never made it through one. And for the record...Epson claims the ink usage issue is due to their fear of your precious printer being "damaged" should the ink level fall too low. To which I and most others say "BULLS***". The technology doesn't even read the ink levels...it "estimates" them...all to the manufacturer's massively profitable cause of "erring on the side of caution". What a surprise.

The bottom line here is that the engineers at Epson set out to rip off every person that ever bought their printers by making them dysfunctional in the presence of all but OEM cartridges and then radically overpricing those OEM cartridges to wring massive profits out of hoodwinked consumers. And not only that, they installed this bug filled technology so that it goes haywire (an estimated) 33% of the time and rejects even their own overpriced replacements forcing the NEW AND UNUSED overpriced cartridge to be tossed and replaced with another NEW overpriced cartridge. The factual truth being that any buyer of these printers will likely have FAR more than the $120 cost of the printer invested in ink before the second cycle of cartridges is used up. Sort of like Exxon offering super cheap new cars to people that get 2 MPG and then raising the price of their gas to $500 a gallon knowing all along they engineered the super cheap new cars to self destruct if off brand gas is put in them. Doesn't take long to see that the price or handling/styling/quality characteristics of the car never figured into the equation to begin with.

Get the printer if you want....it actually does print pretty good and you might even pick one up for nothing from a current owner who hasn't yet dropped it out of a 12 story window or backed over it with a truck after the ink ran out. There is a wealth of technology out there you can buy to circumvent the corporate Epson thieves. Supposedly there is a $30 chip reset device that overrides the reject tech and Amazon sells CIS ink tank equipment ($35-$80) which, if carefully installed, provide an endless ink supply and eliminates the problem at the source. But my question is why support these corporate scumbags and use their stuff to begin with knowing that you actually will have to go out and spend another $100+/- to defeat their thieving chip reset tech? REQUEST: Any updates on NEW class action lawsuits against Epson would be helpful in this review section as well. Maybe the second or third class action lawsuit against these SOBs will be the charm.

UPDATE 2/19/2012: I contacted Epson to see what they would do about the failure for the Artisan 50 to recognize the infamous cyan (dark) cartridge. I spoke with a service rep. She ran me through everything I had already tried then promised to immediately send out another cyan cartridge to see if that would solve the problem. She was, of course, lying her ass off and I soon found out why. They had checked the warranty on my printer after I had given her the serial number, realized it was going to run out in 7 days, and never sent the cartridge. Once I tired of waiting for it and contacted them again with the reference number for the call, they told me..."Oh, we're so sorry...your warranty has run out and we can no longer help you". Epson aren't just low-life scumbags...they are criminals in my opinion. They have floated these absolutely worthless printers out there for the public to buy for the sole purpose of selling them enormously over-priced ink cartridges with technology designed to cause failure. Anyone who's had the misfortune to buy one of these printers should explore joining into a class action suit against the company.

5Great printer for little money - add a CISS!
By A. Lanning
I picked this printer up this summer to print CDs and DVDs (also as a backup to my Canon). I've been nothing but happy with it. Very easy to use, and the cartridges included actually printed quite a few CDs and documents before they started to dry up. I purchased a CISS (Continuous Ink Supply System) for it, and it's all working GREAT together. The ink cartridges from Epson are very expensive, so the CISS and this great little printer will save us a fortune!

5Perfect
By Catnip Productions
I researched an inexpensive method to print labels on CD's and create beautiful jewel case labels. Stick-on labels were out. I tried a lightscribe system from HP and was unhappy with the results. It took 25 minutes per disk and the jewel case labeling software left alot to be desired...took it back. I found an Epson printer in a Discmaker's catalogue for $100 and called about it but they said they didn't carry it anymore. I called Epson and they said it is out-of-production but the replacement is the Artisan 50, however, they were out-of-stock. I found it on Amazon and ordered it. WOW! I've printed on over 100 disks and a couple of dozen full-color master labels and haven't even used up half the ink. I print master labels on photo paper and take them to a print shop for copying. The software for creating jewel case labels is amazingly easy to learn & use and the results are phenomenal. The claim of being able to print 20 disks-per-hour is no exageration and the resulting product is more strikingly beautiful than most professionally printed disks that I've ever seen. My concern with an inkjet printer is the risk of water damage should the label or disk get wet. I poured water on one of the labels and it wasn't affected at all. My only complaint about the software is the limited selection of font styles, but with the distortion effect, some interesting possibilities exist. I purchased ink cartridges that are not official Epson replacements and I haven't tried them yet so I can neither deny nor confirm the assertion of another reviewer for whom this was an issue, but given the efficiency of the ink consumption of this printer, I feel it well worth the investment in Epson cartridges. I would highly recommend this printer to anyone, especially those looking for an economical way to create beautiful artwork for CD's and DVD's.

2EPSON--The New Name in Dishonesty!!!!!!!
By Mike
This is my second review, and in fairness, it does a wonderful job when it is done screwing you. That means, after a two week session with 123 Injets, trying to figure out why their cartridges did not work as replacements, I come to find out that Epson has been playing games---even after the got away cheap on their last class action suit with supposedly "near empty" cartridges.

Their Artisan 50 recognises that you just refilled an old cartridge, and will say "no, No No! Buy our cartridges or else!" I just spent almost an hour and a half for it to recognise a new Epson Cartridge I just placed in it. Even when you play by the rules, you are feisting you.

I looked for a printer that could economically do short run DVD's. This is about it. HP is already known as "Printer Ink Bandido", so my next step up will be with a system that doesn't fleece me and screw with me every time I need a new cartridge.
If you jump thru a thousand hoops the way they tell you, your new legit cartridge is a clunker.

SCREW YOU THEIVES AT EPSON! MAKE YOUR MONEY HONESTLY, OR YOU WILL BE OUT BUSINESS!
THERE ARE PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO READ THE INTERNET. YOU KNOW, THE BLOGS! lIKE THIS ONE. YOUR LABEL MAKER HAS LABELED YOU! Lawsuit time again.......

2Cannot recommend this printer
By Nicole K.
Update #2 - Almost nine months after my original review and Epson STILL hasn't released the ICC profile for their Ultra Premium Luster paper. If you are using anything other than their Ultra Premium line you really aren't getting your money's worth on this printer. And as a photographer I can't give my clients work printed on glossy! Unfortunately, Epson doesn't seem to even have a timeline for giving their consumers proper ICC profiles. I just cannot understand why they have profiles for every other paper besides their most popular?

Update - I am adding a few stars onto my original review for a couple of reasons. One, because Epson customer service is actually one of the better customer service experiences I've had to deal with. They are very quick and courteous with their responses. And two, because after a month the banding problem I was having has randomly fixed itself. I'm hoping it was only a problem with the printer being so new, and will not happen again. But I will certainly update my review if this is not the case.

Original Review
Let me start off by saying that if you can get this printer working correctly, it will produce some incredible prints. Epson's Ultra Premium photo paper, combined with the amazing Claria Hi-Def ink is sure to exceed your expectations on print quality. That is IF your printer decides to work properly.

Out of the box the initial installation (Mac OSX 10.6) was quite easy, and everything worked smoothly. I then tried to connect my printer to wi-fi which is when my problems began. Although I followed the instructions to a T, wi-fi just would not install on my printer, despite the fact that this printer advertises a wi-fi connection in "seconds". A few days, countless hours, and a couple phone calls to Epson did not solve the problem, I was basically told they didn't know what the issue was. Having to connect my computer and printer with a cable every time I needed to print something was a bit of a pain, but certainly not something that was worth the hassle of returning the product. I then started printing some images to complete client orders I had lined up, and I noticed banding on every single image. I followed all of the steps listed on Epson's website, as well as took the advice of a printing instructor at my school, taking every step to rectify this problem. Nothing worked. And weeks later my printer is still banding. I have changed the ink and lost a full pack of Epson Ultra Premium Photo Paper, wasting a ridiculous amount of money in the process. Now my printer will no longer even respond to the "clean the print heads" command.

Another big problem with this printer is that Epson has not completed the ICC profiles for some of their own paper, most notably the Ultra Premium Luster. This paper of course being the favorite of photographers. And if you can't print on Ultra Premium paper there's not much purpose in purchasing the overpriced Claria inks, as their full potential will not be reached using mediocre paper. I contacted Epson and they said they don't know when the ICC profile will be available.

Epson's paper is, in my opinion, the best on the market and as a photographer I hate giving my clients work printed on anything less. But nothing is worth this much hassle. Epson should invest some more time into producing quality printers that are worthy of the paper and ink they use.

*Just a note, this printer does not come with a USB cord, so if you are thinking of purchasing this product and don't have an extra one laying around, I suggest buying a USB cord along with it since your wi-fi may end up not working. Otherwise, you'll still need access to one for initial set-up.

5Here's To Your New Photo Printing Addiction
By Canis Majoris
I rarely give 5-stars to a printer because there are usually aspects within its usage that are done only satisfactory--trying to functionally get by. The Epson Artisan 1430 is an HD photo printer and it should be reviewed under only that guise.

---Summarical Thought---

This printer gives extremely high quality print-outs on photo paper when using high resolution images. The print time is somewhat lengthy though the outcome is worth the effort. There is a minimalist approach to unboxing and use, for there are very few steps to get the Epson working. It is fairly quick to set-up wirelessly through the included software. There are no negatives that stick out, except maybe subjectively, to claim there are lacking points or better options. If what you want is a way to print high-quality photos the Epson Artisan 1430 is nothing but this.

---Printing Quality---

I used fairly inexpensive Semi-Gloss photo paper that was not a 'premium' grade nor an Epson brand.

Photo Quality on Photo Paper: 9/10

Settings used: Quality Option: 'Best Photo' Print Options: All Boxes Unchecked *Under Advanced Tab*: All Boxes Unchecked under Print Options

When printing photos out, I looked for resolutions at least 1 megapixel or more--at least 1024x786--and blew the pictures up to make a 4*8.5x11 poster. The latter was done using Picasa by Google and something I strongly suggest doing if you get this printer. That is one of the fun things that you can do with a printer that accurately replicates photos/pictures/paintings on paper--you can do a lot of interesting decorations/projects. My idea was to find some of my favorite paintings online and print them out to use around the house--which this printer did exceptionally well at. It is for this fact that I can really give you a good idea on the print quality of this printer. The lower the resolution of course the less clear and precise the photos/pictures were when enlarged.

Comparing to the original picture on my laptop screen, the pictures printed out where actually better quality with better contrast and colors. I do know my LED screen is not too good, but the pictures were extremely vibrant and saturated correctly. Printing paintings from Monet to Van Gogh as well actual pictures, the accuracy was outstanding.

Printing black and white text on plain paper, the Artisan did not have the sharp angles and abyss black that a laser printer would have though the text was fairly decent with a slightly washed out black and compact angles around the letters.

B/W Quality: 7/10

---Ink...& Usage---

**Important**
The Epson Artisan 1430 takes Epson cartridge 79 which is high-capacity. After going to the store and seeing Epson 78 next to the 79 with the label: 'Standard Capacity' and 30% less in the cost, I thought that this would be an option for someone wanting to print just a few more photos. Even the employee thought the 78 would fit in the Artisan. This is not the case. The cartridges look identical except for 1 strip of plastic that blocks the ability to slide it in the cartridge holder all the way. Well, I decided to 'snip' the extra plastic boundary and it proceeded to fit perfectly. When going to prime the ink, however, I found that the printer would not recognize the ink. Not sure why Epson did not want the 78 to be used in the printer, but it will not in anyway take anything other than Epson 79.

The cartridges are around 22$ a piece and the Epson needs 6: Black, Yellow, Light Magenta, Light Cyan, Dark Magenta, and Dark Cyan. When printing many colored photos the most used where the Light Magenta and Light Cyan. I printed around 40 or so 'highest' quality full size (8.5x11) print-outs before the L. Magenta and L. Cyan ran out. Yellow was on its way. If you plan to use this for many photos, go ahead and buy some replacement L.Magenta and L.Cyan cartridges. If you are planning on printing 5"x7" or smaller photos, this ink will last a very very long time. If I had to guess at the latter I would say you would at least get 120 printouts before running empty.

---Print Time---

The print time was fairly slow and this is due to me selecting the highest possible quality and deselecting the 'fast print' option (don't know if that helps quality or not). It took about 7-8 minutes to finish printing a full size photo.

---Operation---

Very simple to use. The wireless setup is the most complicated but this is lessened due to the software included with the Artisan. You have the choice of using the included CD to install software on your computer--and setup the wireless connection--or you can download it from Epson's website. Some printers have you follow a manual to setup the wireless connection, but the Epson, through the software, is automated. You have the option to connect via an AccessPoint (which is sometimes difficult to find), or you can input a wireless key. I did find it difficult to setup multiple connections because after you first connect to your router, I could not find how to add another connection without installing and re-installing the software.

The printer is very very quiet, equal to a loud whisper and is stable when on a table. It is wide, somewhat heavy (25 lbs or 11kg), and takes up a lot of space (25" or 63cm wide).

This printer will not be just something in your house that prints things but can really encourage a hobby in creating posters, decorating the house, and forming photo albums/collages. Be warned that with the high quality photos might also come an addiction to inundate your place of living with many pictures. The reasonable price makes this a very good value.

4First one I got was DOA but EPSON replaced fast, prints are awesome
By Kilgore Gagarin
I've already read two OTHER reviews of this printer that had the exact same problem out of the box: namely, the paper jam signal is blinking (indicating a paper jam - duh) and will not clear no matter what you do. The EPSON support was timely (I had to wait 5 minutes on a weeknight for tech support) and some of the best I've had. In the end, they determined the bogus paper jam light was unsolveable and they had to send me a replacement. I received it by FEDEX 2 days later. They also let me keep the original printer's ink cartridges and sent me 6 new ones, so I was able to do some "free" testing as to ink capacity (see below). With the replacement printer I had ZERO problems with easy setup; no horizontal striping on the prints; all colors solid and vibrant.

Pros:

* Excellent tech support and hand holding.
* Stunning pro quality prints on Epson High-Gloss Paper
* Beautiful prints on Epson Matte Presentation Paper
* Problem free push one button setup with WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup)
* Included copy of Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 (Win/Mac)
* Some of the best, friendliest, and fastest support I've ever received

Cons:

* Obvious bad initial batch of DOA printers WHICH MUST BE FIXED
* Power cord has tendency to come out of printer
* Sparse documentation in box (newbies beware)

Things to note:

* Big footprint (which is necessary for a big format printer)
* If you don't have WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) capable router, wireless setup may be a problem
* USB printer cable is NOT included but would be useful
* Specialized ink and paper is more expensive than usual home printing supplies (don't be surprised)
* Paper feed support for 13 x 19 inch is a bit short for thin matte paper which "flops over"

I set this up with WPS before I installed any software, which was not in the included documentation. My experience told me to set up with WPS before installing drivers as the printer is just registering with the router. Just push the WPS button on your router (if it has one) and then push the button on your printer within 2 minutes. When I subsequently installed the included software and commenced setup, it asked me if I knew where my printer was and finding it on the network was trivial. Nowhere does it say to do WPS first, and I suspect some people will have setup problems if they don't do WPS first (or don't have a WPS router). I had no need of a USB cable for setup.

Also, though the wireless connectivity is nice, you may have issues with it later as I did. It's likely that the printer was too far away from my router and the connection may have dropped (yes, my fault). So, out of 25 wirelessly printed posters, 2 stopped printing in the middle and I wasted a couple of premium photo sheets. (NOTE ADDED: Large files printed in high quality on glossy paper cause most problems. Same photo printed on matte paper is no problem. Wi-fi bandwidth or packet issue? Maybe.Problem does NOT occur with USB connection.) USB cable connection was rock solid. I highly recommend getting the inexpensive matte paper while you setup and learn to use the printer. Alternatively, just do setup and testing with regular 8.5 x 11 inch inkjet paper.

When replacing my printer, Epson let me keep the original six cartridges and sent me six new ones as well (like I said, nice support!) so I experimented with quantity. I was able to print thirty 13 x 19 prints before two of the cartridges ran out: light cyan and light magenta. The other cartridges are at varying levels, with black being about one quarter full. It's difficult to say what mileage you will get since it depends upon what you print - I did black and white prints, color photographs, and movie posters (Wikimedia Commons has a great high def Boris Karloff "The Mummy" with some complex coloring). Each of the six ink cartridges will be individually replaced, not all at once. You might want to invest in a second set, and then replace each individually as they run out. Light cyan and light magenta are the colors most likely to need replacement the most often. Black if you do a lot of bitonal printing (large text posters).

I printed on one sheet of non-Epson glossy photo paper and 2 hours later the ink was smudging. When Epson recommends that you use their own paper, take that to heart. The Epson papers are dry and solid right out of the printer.

Based on my experience so far, I have a rule of thumb that a single 13 x 19 inch photo quality print on premium paper will cost about $3 to $5. That might be higher than reality, but it still gives me a good feel for single print expenses.

I love this printer and would have probably given 5 out of 5 stars had it worked initially. The hand writing is on the wall that there's something awry with some of these early shipments, but Epson responded like a champ and replaced it quickly.

Lots of friends and family are going to get gifts this year of beautiful 13 x 19 inch prints of houses, babies, and cats. Cheers!
