PCRush is the worst vendor that I have ever had to deal with.

This vendor shipped me a product that didn't match the description that then would not replace it for the correct model #. Then when you have an issue, you cannot talk to a person. All communication is through email and you get a standard response to every reply that states their policy and basically that they can't help you without charging you additional money.

I would warn anyone about purchasing anything from this vendor.

Heavy duty fast laser color printer.

I bought this printer from a wholesale dealer. I've been using it for 3 months now.
This is M551DN model. It supports duplex print (printing on both sides)

The box in which it came is huge. A grown adult can easily fit there and play jokes or scare people. Kids will love it. lol.

Any hoo, the printer is a little heavy. If you have a bad back or are not very strong I recommend you move it with the help of some one. Make sure you put this printer in a very sturdy table or desk.

Out of the box the printer has all of it's toners (both black and color) pre-installed and ready to go. All you have to do is remove the security tapes and you're done preparing the hardware. Installing paper is also very easy. Everything feels robust and looks like it will last very long.

When you first turn it on, the printer goes trough a series of tests and boot sequences. It takes a couple of minutes for this. Actually, the boot up is pretty slow even after. Takes about 1.5 minutes to boot each time. Shutting down is fast though.

Installing the software was not hard. It did not detect the printer at first try.
By default, the printer was not using DHCP and had a static IP.
After a couple of minutes of messing with the LCD menu I was able to find the option and change the network settings. Not big of a deal. I was quickly able to assign a relevant IP address to it. Some one with out any networking experience might fumble a bit with this. After changing the IP, i could ping the printer and the software finally detected the printer. The remaining installation of the software was very easy. A test page was printed successfully at first try.

After it's first print I noticed a buzzing noise coming out of my PC speakers. After doing some investigating, the culprit was the printer itself. Whenever it's in active mode, the printer makes a buzzing noise that you can hear if you get close to the printer. This noise is introduced to your electrical grid somehow and you can hear it very noticeably in your computer speakers. Two computers in different rooms experienced this issue. Maybe a voltage regulator might help. I have to try that out.

I then printed a color photo image about half a letter page in size with various colors. The printout was good but it did not wow me. I raised the resolution and it didn't make much difference. The color accuracy was not spot on. But this may be due to paper quality, image quality, monitor calibration or simply user printer configuration. I have only printed about a dozen pages in color so take this info with a grain of salt.

As for the real heavy usage, after three months of black/white printing, we have not a had single page get stuck or damaged when printing. No paper jams at all. Everything has been perfect in that regard. No problems and no complaints can be made by me.
Only issue was an error appeared on screen. The printer was left on and the next day it had en error message. It made no sense and I couldn't see what it meant on the manual. I just reseted the printer and all was good again.

The printer also has a web portal you can easily access by simply typing in the printer's IP address. Here you can change the printer's configuration in a very user friendly web page. It's very easy to restrict color printing here.

This model also supports HP eprint which allows you to print emails or attachments directly through your cell phone. Just send an email to the printer's email address (you can assign it through HP eprint sign up webpage) and the information is printed.

In general, this printer is great for high capacity black/color printing. It's fast and reliable.
I'm pretty confident it will last us very long.
The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the on/off buzzing noise it makes and introduces this to the electrical grid. Also, the slow boot is a bit annoying.

Here's my list of pro/cons for this printer.

PROS
- Solidly built and robust printer
- Fast and good resolution on black/white printing
- Very complete and intuitive web portal (you can change printer settings here)
- Easily restricts color printing
- Color printing is very good but not great on plain paper
- HP ePrint really works
- Reliable printing (no paper jams)

CONS
- Introduces noise to electrical grid when active
- A little slow to boot

Excellent value

I purchased the M551dn after a lot of comparison with the HP 451dn. In the end there was no comparison. Based on OEM toner prices the difference in price between these two printers is close to the difference in toner supplied (1500 p vs 6000 p cartridges) so that by the time you have printed 6000 pages the cost of the printers+toner is nearly equal. Further, based on OEM toner prices and 25,000 pages, the 551 is $1500 less expensive to operate than the 451 - about $0.06 per page cheaper. As added pluses: the 551 has 1 GB of memory vs 256 Mb, 1200x1200 resolution vs 600x600, is significantly faster, holds more paper, etc., etc. It took less than 5 minutes to have it running on my three macs. Print quality is excellent, even if you are on the default 600x600 output, n.b. you have to change the default to get 1200x1200. Quality was significantly better than the HP CP3505 I was using previously. If you are looking for a high quality color laser printer with low operating costs per page, look no further. This is a great printer for the money.

Very Solid Small Biz Printer

If you are looking for a color laser with a lot more muscle than your standard home printer and have the budget, the HP M551 series is a great choice. Adding the duplex option is not a luxury and works extremely well with all of the paper that we have including 80# stock. Toner cartridges have good life and can be refilled if you choose bringing the cost per page down dramatically.

Excellent Value for Med Duty Professional Office

We decided to purchase this copier for my wife's small law office. We had an aging Ricoh Aficio 2035 that was rated at35 ppm. It has over 250,000 copies on it, and the repair bill to service it to restore to clear copies was $1,000 parts and labor. Parts alone was $400 for the photo drum and service kit bought in discount. All that to say this MFC Printer is replacing a Ricoh copier rated at 35ppm with a duty cycle of 80,000 copies a month. We have a consumer grade multifunction HP Color Copy/Print/Fax that is ok for light use that works OK. We also have a stand-alone monochrome laser printer, of SOHO grade. So I was a bit nervous on trying out this new ground of enterprise level MFC printers. I had hope for $2,000 and with the HP name I would not be disappointed, but was worried it would just be a big version of what the office stores and retailers have out on display. After about a month and 1,254 copies, 828 pages printed, and 48 pages sent via fax later we are REALLY pleased with this unit.

I was a little skeptical when I read HP was rating this thing at 42ppm and 75,000 copies a month. Faster per minute than our old Ricoh, and almost as heavy a duty cycle...all in a package that is about 1/3 the size. The Ricoh was not networked, for scanning, emailing, or printing, nor was it able to do faxes.

This thing is a no brainer for a small medical/dental/legal office, or any small business that wants something better than general consumer products, yet not wanting to spend five figures to get a modern copier nor wanting a several hundred dollar a month copier lease.

Gigabit Ethernet, USB hook up, fax, Auto-Document Feeder Scan, Scan to email, Scan to Network are some of the really robust features on this device that make it a tremendous value for the small office niche.

One of the very cool features is that you can set the device to send a digital copy of all sent AND received faxes to an email address as your choice in order to archive the proof of sending. Away from the office and a critical fax comes in? No problem, check your email on your phone, and voila there is your fax!

You can stick a clients file of like 100pages into the ADF and type in an email address....let it be and a minute later, a PDF file of that clients file is in your email box. Or with the touch of another button you can scan and save it over your work network directly to a shared hard drive on one of your computers, or a NAS drive.

All this and MUCH MUCH more, in a device that you actually OWN. I am hoping this thing will put out two solid years of trouble free service. If so then it will have been EASILY worth the money. I am hopeful this thing will be around for MANY years. But even if it does start giving up the ghost after 2-3 years, by that point it would be cost effective to upgrade again if need be, as opposed to sinking $15,000 into a traditional copier based product.

It seems to be rather sturdily constructed. Copies, fax printouts, and PC printouts are fast, quiet, and CLEAR! Our office had been putting up with very low quality copies for quite some time as the repair cost to service the copier was prohibitive, it just did not make sense. Now we are asking why in the world did we wait so long and put up with such terrible output quality for so long.

Toner is a bit (actually rather) expensive. Just paid $350 at New Egg for a twin pack of the 55X High Yield cartridges (~14,000 pgs each). That might perhaps come down. We will not be cutting corners on cheap toner, not when this thing is new anyway.
