1Stay away from this printer!
By Deborah L. Santini
Have had the 5130 CDN for 13 months now. The consumables are incredibly expensive and only available from Dell. We are constantly having to replace toner, the toner waste container, fuser, etc. They are all high-priced from Dell.

One month out of warranty the printer quit with an error that it needed a new belt unit. Ordered the belt unit (only available from Dell for $375.00) and installed it. At power up it gave us an 006-370 error and said to call for support.

Called for support and wasted a ridiculous amount of time on hold then being transferred to different people.

Finally spoke to a tech support person who ultimately told me that since the printer wasn't under warranty any longer I'd have to order a "Ross Assembly"/print head and have the MCU/ESS board replaced. He also told me I'd have to hire a technician to install these parts as they are not something a customer can do. And he said that I could NOT pay to order the parts from Dell or have a Dell technician do the work, because the printer is out of warranty.

I spoke to his supervisor who treated me like an idiot and told me repeatedly that if I had just paid the extra money for the extended warranty I wouldn't have to worry about arranging to get the printer fixed on my own.

Then I received the following email from Dell:

"The Dell part c399t is not available for sale from Dell as it is recommended to not attempt to replace it. Several parts houses do have it available (found by internet searching Dell C399T), best price for the part only we found is $795.00. This has the potential to be a $1000 repair. The recommended choice would be to replace the printer. If you need anything else please let me know."

So a 13 month old printer that Dell advertises as providing "Superb Performance" and as an "Exceptional Long Term Value" will cost more than its purchase price to repair and they recommend just replacing it. WHAT???

Our university spends literally hundreds of thousands of dollars with Dell every year and this is the "service" they provide.

Dell clearly does not stand behind the products they sell and it seems clear that unless you buy the extended warranty your equipement will fail within days of when the one year warranty expires.

So steer clear of Dell products entirely, especially this printer.

5This is a lot of printer
By Neurasthenic
It does a lot, it does it quickly, it prints from just about anything with a microchip, and it's easy to set up. The only disadvantage to this beast is that it takes up a lot of space. We use the printer primarily from OSX, but it works from Windows too, and I was even able to print from a Tandy WP-2, an eight bit computer from 1989 that connected directly to the printer's parallel port.

It wakes from sleep faster than Lexmark printers do, in my experience, and the print looks better than a Xerox Phaser. My only complaint is with the form factor -- the printer is vast, and the auxiliary paper tray is on the side, so in addition to finding the linear feet for the printer itself, you need to leave a couple of extra feet to the right if you plan to print on letterhead or transparencies (yes, you can put them in the regular printer tray as an alternative, but it would be nice to use the auxiliary tray since Dell was nice enough to build one in there).

5Home Office 5130cdn
By Wort
I have used this printer for >1 year, <50k pages - nearly all pages containing some color, and many with substantial color coverage.
I purchased this model in an attempt to cut my total cost of printing - it seems like the more expensive the printer, the lower the cost of toner/page.
At this point, my calculation says that I am now $ ahead over buying a $500 printer because of lower toner cost - YMMV...remember, I use a LOT of color.

The printer has performed as advertised.
It is big and heavy for a home office.
Even after a year, it seems ridiculously fast...especially when it is duplexing.
Duplex printing has worked flawlessly.
Toner carts are very easy to change.
The few paper jams I have encountered have been easy to clear.
The black cartridges seem to last forever.
The only issue I have had is that a couple of times it seemed to "forget" what size paper it is set for. Turing power off and back on and resetting paper size/sources fixed it.
I have not used Dell support for this product, so cannot comment specifically, but I assume support would be the usual nightmare of idiotic first/second level agents.

This printer has a 3 year warranty, so I am confused by comments in another review here, although it is little hard to believe that an IT Dept that does >$100k/year w/Dell cannot resolve issues with a defective product.

4Exceeded my expectations. Works fine with Macintosh (10.7.x)
By Anthony Martin
First, there was a reviewer that was frustrated with Macintosh support for this printer. I do not doubt one bit the issues that they had. I have had similar issues in the past with dell printers. I think Dell has fixed their issues now.

After receiving the printer, and yes no Mac drivers on the CD, I went to dell's website and downloaded their 10.7 mac driver. (Interesting to note, this was the only mac driver I saw...don't know if it works below 10.7, and this says it is version 2.2 of the driver.)

I installed the driver. Guess what? It didn't work, it did not show up on the list of available drivers. Hmmm..... I repaired disk permissions and it was fine.

Okay now for a test print... Since a review on here said it had bad photo reproduction, I went to iPhoto and printed out one. I have a lot of experience with printers. I support over 400 and many different kinds in my job. As a general rule lasers/LEDs will be inferior to ink jets when it comes to photos.

So... only looking at lasers/LEDs, I would give this a 8 on a scale of 1-10 for photos. Better than most color lasers I have at my work. I did not tweak any of the settings in the driver, so you might even do better. But... any photo I really like I send out to a photo print service anyway. It gives me better quality and really is cheaper when you factor in the paper and ink/toner.

Baring any big long term use problems, I love this printer. I knocked of a star for the hassle with the Macintosh Drivers.

So...

Pros:
Size (It is nice and small, it gets well on most desks without being the centerpiece.
Consumables seem reasonably priced if they hold up to their ratings.
Good print quality. (One of the better lasers for photos, but...don't buy this for a photo printer.)
Macintosh Support.
Time to print is great for an "inexpensive" printer.

Cons:
Macintosh Support is listed on specs, but is not elegantly executed.
Durability? ( I hate to list this as a con right now, but it says it has a drum and fuser designed to last the life of the printer. That sounds fishy to me.)

3A bad start, but then Dell came through
By David E. Williams
Bought this printer to use with a Mac. Product description says it's Mac compatible. Printer arrived with a driver CD for Windows but not Mac. Dell website shows a Mac driver but the link is broken.

When I used the "chat" function with customer support they asked for my email and phone number twice, then told me "because you purchased this online, you will need to fill out an ownership transfer form."

After I told the agent I was interested in drivers for both 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and 10.7 (Lion), the agent replied:"The Lion OS is not supported at this time, however there is an update through the MAC software update from Lexmark for generic drivers for the Lion OS. For the Snow Leopard OS, the website is currently being updated I will be happy to get your email and send you the link once the website is fully updated."

After a few more back and forths during which I was asked for my email address yet again, the rep told me she would email me the driver link once it became available. I'm not holding my breath.

Big waste of time.

If I could enter a 0 for number of stars I would do so.
------

Update

I badgered Dell on Twitter and they got in touch with me and provided a link to a working driver. I think the issue is that someone else makes this printer for them and they got their wires crossed. The machine is now working fine and I've upgraded my review from 1 star to 3.
