many years of great prints

I too experienced the paper feeding problems that others have reported but I was able to work out a solution. The LaserJet 6L can feed paper back into an upright bin after printing, or out a slot in the front. A small lever on the front left side of the printer selects where the paper will be directed. After a few years, I experienced jams when the switch was in the upright position to feed the paper back up into the bin. When I put the switch down, to have the paper come out the front of the unit, the problem went away. Print quality is excellent and the cost per print is a small fraction of what ink jet copies cost. Before the 6L, I owned a LaserJet 2 for nearly 15 years. I think that the 6L might equal that record.

Better than its predecessor, still not great

The HP Laserjet 5L jammed constantly; I owned two and both were destroyed by my repeated efforts to clear jams that routinely occurred in an inaccessible area under the fuser. My 6L didn't jam until I'd owned it for a few months, but eventually the same thing happened and I had to invest in about $80 of repairs.
Considering that these older printers will inevitably be bought used and cheap, though, one probably has to accept that they won't be perfect.

Real Workhorse of a Printer - Don't Think HP Makes 'Em Like This Anymore

I actually just got rid of my LaserJet 6L, replacing it with the Brother HL2270DW. The HP lasted nearly fifteen years (wow!), and was still working when I took it to the recycling center. It needed a good cleaning, and a new toner cartridge, but I didn't think it was worth my time or money to do that. I hope my Brother lasts even half as long!
This was the printer I (and many of my roommates) used in college and graduate school, so it saw a ton of use. Near the end of its time on Earth, it developed a paper feed problem where several sheets at a time would be taken in to the printer. Sometime this would cause it to jam, sometimes it wouldn't. It could be mitigated by using your hands to help the paper along, but that got pretty annoying.
At this point, I wouldn't really recommend you spend any significant amount of money on buying one of these at the going rate. It's old technology and for not that much more, you can have a modern printer with wireless networking. If you saw one at a garage sale for ten bucks then yeah, maybe go for it. Happy printing!
