Great all around printer

I picked up my HP Laserjet 2100 at a flea market for $5.00 around 2001 or so and it has served me well ever since, including the toner cartridge. I was able to find a post script level 2 personality chip for the printer used for $8 including shipping, so it can serve my mac printing as well. Since the printer includes an ethernet print server by default it makes an excellent home, small office or department printer. The printer is rated at 10 ppm and delivers well, especially for text only documents. It handles graphics, spreadsheets, charts and I have never run into a problem with fonts. Printing in PS is slightly slower than pcl 6 which is the native print engine. Using the built in networking I am able to print from any computer in my house and am able to keep the printer in the basement and out of the way. It has a web interface and a telnet interface for managing the printer and checking the status of the printer remotely. It's 1200x1200 print resolution provides very high quality text and graphics, particularly text which no inkjet printer can compete with. Another nice thing about this printer compared to inkjet printers, is that the toner never dries out the way ink cartridges do, since it uses toner which is ground up plastic. The only drawback to this printer is the lack of automatic duplexing (printing on both sides of the paper), although it is capable of printing up to 8 pages on a single sheet to save paper and toner. It also lacks color, which I find is no big deal. I have my photos printed at Walmart far cheaper than I could do it at home with an ink jet printer. The paper handling capacity is great with all the usual sizes included and envelopes. Unless you do a lot of color printing and don't mind paying out the nose for ink, I would recommend this printer over any inkjet and most low end brand new laser printers. You just can't go wrong with this baby.

HP 2100 Laser Printer

The printer did not completely match the description. It did not have a USB port, therefore I had to buy a parallel to USB conversion cable in order to use the printer. Otherwise the printer works great.

Work Horse Printer

I purchased a brand new 2100M in 1999, and have gone thru multiple toner cartridges. I have never had it serviced, but it does need a new fuser after so many years of use. I did buy a serial-to-usb cable from the start because I was told it did not have a usb port. I also installed a Direct Jet printer server to make it a network device so I can print from anywhere in the office, including the yard.
Anyone saying this is a piece of junk must have very unusual expectations because I have found it to be one of the most durable printers I have ever used.
